Do Hindu Married Women need to wear Thali only made of Turmeric Saradu ?

Nothing prevents in collecting some melodious voices for sangeeth.

In north india there are specialised groups for that.

Even in south some specialise in wedding songs -I have across some professionals singing them in brahmin marriages

But the whole act is so "brazen"..I somehow like a marriage to be quiet.

I myself cant stand the sound of nadaswaram and drums..why does marriage have to be such a noisy affair?

Thank God when I got married I never played any music during the dinner reception.

Marriage does not mean that other needs ,wants of the individual cannot be realised or should be forgotten.

There is space for everything in life.

Only we should know how to fulfill all our needs making space for them in an active life.

I believe marriage leads to a larger circle of relatives to bank on . Each one is a potential resource.

Next generation requires our help only for a few years About 20-25 years in a long life span of 70 plus. That is also not a full time job during those years. After that

only parents want them not children.

So why talk of marriage as end of the world and a kind of total darkness after tying a thali on some innocent girl.

marriage is just one more event ,like birth,or death
Its sad if you think that working for the welfare of the children is total darkness, when tying the thali nobody is forcing the girls its with her consent that a man ties it (as per deva vivah), if the thali is with her consent the its raksasa vivah. My point is if you have agreed to getting married then the objective of the lives of both the partners is towards the family. If you have personal ambitions and you want to live with a partner as well then its companionship or its called a live-in relationship. Its not a vivah.

Living with another person should be a noisy affair. Some noise makes for a healthy marriage....Who wants a totally silent wife to live with?. It could be boring...

Mainly its males who are too much into Thali sentiment..I don't know why?

I think they get a kiccku from seeing a Thali especially more if a person is wearing a traditional yellow string.

Does turmeric have an aphrodisiac effect? Yes..it does...its a well known Libido booster when taken orally or applied topically.

So there you go guys..now you know why some men and some women too are just having too much Thali sentiment!LOL

I was also observing the thAli sentiment, at least in this thread! Thanks for the analysis.

Most men cheat themselves saying they are working for wife/children .Nothing could be farther than truth.

If you have other interests in life it is not at the cost of wife/children.

Vivah does not mean man becomes a slave of partner and viceversa. Both want personal space for themselves or else they will suffocate due to extra proximity.

There are somethings which are totally personal not to be shared with anyone, many things shared with wife and others with the general public and outside world.

Most of us compatmentalise this way. Those who mix up things damage their life and suffer

These Males and females see too many tamil films. Hence the thali sentiment.....

I frankly think it should be inconvenient to have a yellow thread or jewellery around the neck all the time.I see many men also wearing gold chains

I prefer not to wear even a watch on the wrist. In hot weather,it is too sweaty to wear any extra items close to the body. Many get rashes and suffer due to it.

Most hinduwomen swear by the thali/mangalsutra. It is irrespective of caste . Atleast in this they are united in their belief.Men believe more in thali for reasons only known to

them. Anyway ,they do not wear thali.Yet they I suspect expect their wives to do that. They feel secure that at least one person belongs to them who normally

does not desert them since they have tied the thali.

I think Krish ji is right: it is a mark of ownership.

In other words everybody should know that that is my woman.

From the available information we find that the word "thali" is derived from "thalapatra" Palm leaf. (தாலம் பனை என்ற பனை ஓலை). It seems the palm leaf in which the written agreement on the day of betrothal (which generally done at an young age) used to be rolled and tied in yellow thread, and used in the wedding. Later palm leaf was replaced by "Turmeric" piece, eventually transformed to gold. These are just symbolic confirmation of marriage.

Tie the Thali...My Woman!

After marriage on starts to wish he could sing 'No Woman No Cry"

True..out here in Msia if one does not wear Thali its almost a "crime" a law created by the "Thaliban"(females who scold others for not wearing their Thali..hence I call them Thaliban).

These types do not mind their business.

No one asks them why they wear their Thali but they dare walk up to a perfect stranger and ask them 'why you dont wear your Thali" and then start lecturing you about culture and tradition.

Once a perfect stranger cornered me in a temple and started scolding me in an insulting manner for not wearing a Thali..she was even implying as if my husband and I might not be actually married!LOL

In return I confused her about the transient nature of everything..impermanence of the world and the only string around our neck that mattered is the invisible string of our deeds and then threw in some Sanskrit words and Shlokas here and there and asked she got confused and become wide eyed and said 'I have not met a person like you..you are different"

Then I told her that she needs to be like me!LOL

So I handled the Thaliban in the most Ahimsa way ever!LOL

Dear Renu,

Some follow the customs where as some others think it as 'kashtam'!

Now a days, many females don't care about wearing a thAli and it is a fact!!

May be you could ask some of your married relatives or friends, whose response you could take it as truthful ? Are you sure you would get the same MY WOMAN response unfailingly? The origins of thAli could be obscure and it might even have started with the notion of ownership in the past. But is that the current day notion of all ?

You might also have seen bears being controlled by the nose ring and there are also some married women who are violently disposed and also wearing a nose ring or nose stud. Could it also be said that nose rings are worn by females or made to wear by males with the intention of controlling them when they are violent by tugging at the nose ring?

Fashionable thinking can also lead one astray.

Well to be frank the current day notion of most level headed Indian males are that Thali is a symbol of marriage.

I have a relative who is married to a very traditional man and he says that the Thali is much more than a marriage symbol. He said that it has been sanctified by Vedic mantras as should be treated as sacred.

Ok that is a proper explanation.

But most average machans think that its a symbol to show that its My Woman and females themselves love the feeling of being married.

Also some males feel their life hangs on a string and feel secure seeing their wife wear a string around their necks..it gives them a sense of long life..too bad Yama gives a damn who wears any Thali or not..for Yams only his noose matters!LOL

I personally do not like nose rings..just not into body piercing. Some females like it cos it is supposed to be add beauty.

One can control a bear with a nose ring but most wives control their husbands after marriage with the male wearing a "suffer-ring"!LOL

May be true for the mod gals. Strange as it may seem, there are some widowed and single women (whom I personally know) sporting the mangalsutra - black beaded chain or customarily designed gold chain for thali, (with or w/o the actual thali) as they feel it gives them security and social status, however fragile and imaginary it may be!

During the 1980's or so, there was a concerted attempt by some unknown elements in Bombay to snatch the thaalis/mangalsutras from ladies who wore them. In the knife attacks to cut the thaali some women were grievously injured. So, during that phase many women, including tabra women, removed their thaalis and kept them in the pooja. Many of them are still keeping the thaali there and are not wearing while in Mumbai, even now.

Wonder how many innocent and naïve women girls have fallen prey to such filmi songs sung by roadside/ social media Romeos and have dispensed with the solemnization of their relationships!
I am reminded of an old MGR duet, sung by TMS and P.Susheela "kanngal irruka thoranam yeno, kaigal irruka malaigal yeno ....." Some one can help with the lyrics, plz.

Thaali is a requirement along with sindoor as it protects women from unwanted attention.

many molesters/eveteasers normally keep away from married women.

even molesters have a code of conduct ,lol

Thats why many singles or widows also wear karugamani or gold chain designs used for thaali.

It is a safety precaution

Only single males keep away from married women.

Most married men have no problems having an affair with another married woman.

You see if a married man has an affair with a married woman..both can't black mail each other.

Only if one is unmarried/widower/widow/divorcee all problems start.

BTW presence or absence of Thali is not an indicator of a person's character.

You are logical but not correct unfortunately.

The way thali /mangal sutra sanctity is drilled into indian male psyche, most would think a lot before making a move towards a married woman.

It is an all india phenomenon.

Most who get into difficulties are singles
