I am not defending anybody. Dr.Venky has acknowledged the Indian roots in public and also his teachers. I think we should appreciate his gesture.

At the same time, do you think he would have got the award if he has continued in India? Why non of the IIT's have produced a single nobel laureate. The Director of an IIT cannot get more salary than the Secretary of HRD Ministry of Government of India. That is why IIT professors went on strike recently. Our system doesn't encourage people to do fundamental research in science and other fields. Dr Venky and so many others have left India for good and continued their research at the more conducive environment & achieved their objectives. He has done his research in USA and Europe which has to be acknowledged by all of us. Those countries have spent enormous money and also created right atmosphere for his work. Lot of his students and others have supported him in his research which he acknowledged in his first reaction itself.

I earnestly feel that he is very modest when he acknowledged several other people and countries in his reaction to the award.

That is why, I said let us leave it at that.

While I am proud of Venkataraman Ramakrishnan's getting Nobel prize this year, I was also initially disappointed at his silence on his TN roots. But, as he left TN at the age of 3, I understand he didn't develop that much affinity towards Tamil and Tamilnadu.

I am also distressed by the intriguing silence observed by our state politicians in not greeting him or even acknowledging his feat openly. Even Bharathi suffered discrimination at the hands of these people, for the only reason he happened to be born in a brahmin family, despite the fact that he vehemently opposed caste system itself.

Hmm... what to do?

Dr. Venky was in Chennai in 2001, delivering Dr. GNR lecture. So, he is fairly plugged in to the Science scene in India.

Regarding the TN politicians not felicitating him, I will start to worry when they start doing such a thing. This lack of any congratulations on their part show their level of humanity and nothing else. Without any comparisons : "Kazhudhaikku theriuma karpura vasanai?". And my apologies to donkeys everywhere.

Good and informative input.

I personally believe in these:

1. Popularity is equated with success, atleast in India. That's wrong.

2. A fluke success does not vouch for real talent. As Shakespeare says,
"Some are born great; some achieve greatness; some have greatness
thrust upon them".

3. Many unnoticed talents and unrewarded talents do exist. May be, their turn
of getting recognition will come only after their death, probably because they
thought and acted much ahead of their times.

4. A person's success will suddenly attract all his staunch critics and strangers alike
towards him. They want to taste a share of his success.

5. Humility, before and after success, keeps people in good stead always and
this trait begets only love, not jealousy and hatred.

Apart from having a flair for research, Venki is more interested in listening to Carnatic music, especially in the Music Academy in Chennai, during the music season."

He has helped sending money to poor students in India where he has grown .

He is speaking the Truth .

He is not a politician . Whatever he felt he said , the situation under which the statements where given
has to be taken into consideration.

He cannot be narrowed down , he stands above Nationality (so is the case of our great sages) ,

A person from our community , from our country is serving the entire human race , for the world .

Is it not said that Brahmins must chant Vedas not for their personal ends alone but also for the betterment of all in the World .

A Tamil Nadu Brahmin is serving the entire wolrd as such and we are proud of it .

விஷயத்துக்கு வருகிறேன்.வெங்கிக்கு முன்னால்,அமர்த்தியா சென், ம*ற்றும்,சந்திரசேகர் , சி.வி.ராமன் என்கிற பிராமணர்கள் கூடத் தான் நோபல் பரிசு வாங்கியிருக்கிறார்கள்.அவர்களும் விஞ்ஞானிகள் தான்.அவர்களும் பிராமணர்கள் என்பதால், இந்திய அரசாங்கங்களால், எங்கேயாவது, எப்பவோவாவது அவமானப்பட்டிருக்கக் கூடும்.அவர்கள் காலத்தில், வெங்கியைப் போல் மின் அஞ்சலில் மூழ்கடிக்கப்படாமல் இருந்தாலும், இந்தியர்களில் ஆயிரக் கணக்கானோர் பாராட்டியிருப்பார்கள்.இது ஒரு மரியாதை.அவர்கள் காலத்தில் எழாத இந்தப் பிரச்சனை, ஏன் வெங்கி காலத்தில் வந்தது?எப்படி வந்தது?

வெங்கி மனிதநேயர் என்று தன்னை அறிமுகப்படுத்திக் கொள்கிறார்;நாடுகளால் தன்னை அடையாளப்படுத்திக் கொள்வதை விட!அப்படியிருந்தும், சாமானியர்களிடம் இப்படியா நடந்து கொள்வது?அதை வேறு விதமாக நளினமாக வெளிப்படுத்தியிருக்கலாமே?

தந்தை காலத்தில் அவமானப்பட்டிருந்தாலும், அதற்காக இவர் இப்படியா வெளிக்காட்டுவது?நாளை இவர் மகனோ , மகளோ இது போல் விருது பெற்றால், சாமானிய இந்தியர்கள், இதனைக் காரணம் காட்டி, அவரின் குழந்தைகளின் சாதனைகளை கொச்சைப்படுத்துவார்களா?அல்லது குப்பையில் தூக்கித் தான் எறிவார்களா?

First of all, Diwali greetings to administration and our friends , here!

Coming to the subject,before Venky,there was Amarthya sen, Chandrasekar, C.V.Raman..all nobel prize winners.The last two are also tamil bramins.Why this issue did not arise then? Do you mean to say, none of the indians then ,did not flood to felicitate these scientists?

Being bramins, they also should have undergone all sorts of humiliations, this Venky went through in his early stunt in India!

Why not then but, now? How come, now?

If his father's fiasco was the motive behind this outburst, then, tomorrow, if his son or daughter also win an international acclaim, and citing this, if common Indian does not acknowledge this, will it be rational? justifiable?

Even tomorrow, the common Indians wherever they are, forgetting all, will rush to felicitate Venky's wards, should they attain such international feat!

No doubt about it!
