i was just watching this incident on Times Now TV and they had put transcription of conversation below video and from that it appeared that the Police were doing a routine job of stopping him , asking him his name , whether he had an ID and his address and for that the concerned person due to his lack of knowing English just mumbled something and except for hearing the word INDIAN they did not understand what he was saying and they asked him does he know English and he did not answer that properly and while they were talking with him he started to leave and they told him that if he starts to leave they will be forced to pull him down and obviously he was unable to understand anything and started to leave for which they jot angry and pulled him down and he was hurt by the same .
My take is if the Concerned Gentleman had his valid Photo ID , visiting Card of his son and had handed over the same the authorities then this incident could have been avoided . In the absence of an ID and Address proof and added to that his lack of knowledge of English to explain why he was at that place made them suspicious and behave bit roughly that ended up injuring him badly .I am not defending the Police for their actions but according to me they were only doing their normal duty and got bit irritated when he was trying to walk away when they were questioning him and that resulted in all this problem . It is better every Indian Parent who visits USA and when travelling alone take with them their Valid ID Proof , a visiting Card of their children that has the address of where they stay and also the contact no of their son/daughter and if they do not know english they must possibly carry a letter from their son / daughter claiming that the following person is their Dad/Mother and that they do not know English and if they need any confirmation kindly contact them at their given contact No .

Rough handling of an old man is not acceptable. Police also know that many Indian parents visit US to see their son/ daughter. grand children and many are not conversant with English language.

This is not acceptable and there will be reactions to this incident in India.

I saw that video. There was no need for that stout officer to push that lean man down on his face!

The behavior is very rude. Can't he differentiate between a criminal and an ordinary elderly man,

who is unable to speak in English?

Yes... That is why I was a bit taken aback by the Sixth Commandment "Hands Up and Kneel down". Are the cops given a bit of training or they merely go through the drill of throwing any suspect face down on the pavement first?

This action by the police was wrong.

But you should not have a run with the Police anywhere.
In this day and age of terrorism everybody is a suspect, even more if you do not fit the norm.
I travel all over the world, and dread it all the time. We were in south America and got separated from our guide. To be stranded in a strange country with no knowledge of their language is a scary phenomenon.

The police is undermanned and ill prepared for the current situation. Then again to expect a cordial behavior one must be able to communicate. The language barrier and cultural differences can make a simple situation worse.
I hope this gentleman recovers soon.

Sorry Krish Sir, can't agree with you.

It is indecent behavior for any one to stare at anyone, male or female.
pj sir
one quiz for you

if you were a youngster and saw a pretty girl coming towards you. what would you do?

a. close both eyes and walk

b. half open your eyes and see and admire

c. close one eye and see with other eye

d. open both eyes and stare.

depending on your answer , I will decide how to take your comment

Dear Krishna,

No one carries the photo ID or visiting card of son / daughter while going just for a walk.

What I find from the video is that the rude behavior of that was unwarranted because he could have

easily caught and tied that elderly man's hands, without pushing him down!

BTW, please read the five commandments posted by me! :)

Dear Naina ji,

This type of incidents are so disheartening to learn about! Recently here a White man shot down and killed 3 Muslim college students over a parking lot feud. Hate crimes are on the rise it seems....

I have argued twice with officers on duty who stopped me over driving related questioning so far and both the times they were faulty and though they stopped me, could reason with me and let me got without a ticket. Also 2 weeks ago I honked loudly at an officer who was trying to suddenly take a left when I was on the main road driving at full speed and after my hank and sudden brake, he only waved at me to go on as I felt embarrassed to find out I had honked at an officer and waved out to him first apologetically.

But I always suspect wherever there are densely crowded Indian population, the Whites in that area may not be very happy. Somewhere just a few months ago, I read a note saying "No Hindus allowed" board being on display in the public space, somewhere in the USA! About a decade ago, in a prominent newspaper's Sunday booklet, there was an article featuring a certain "Fountain Head Apartments" here in Shrewsbury, MA. Shrewsbury is a famous town for office-goers/programmers here in MA as it affords new contruction houses and plenty of space for relatively cheaper housing prices and it is a thriving locality for starters new to this country... And the article described in detail (with contempt and bitterness) the ways of us Indians here, down to criticizing our dressing code, the way we act as a group exchanging our well-wishes when we see friends, our celebration of Diwali in rental public halls or churches, etc, etc. There was no harm in anything about us Indians and our manners but the article complained everything as if it is #1 fault to do in the USA! After that I wrote a long article back to that newspaper arguing how they can feature harmless habits of Indians in negative light like that, but they did not reply back or publish it.

So that is one time I read racial articles from the Whites discussing Indians living in USA.

But more than Whites, I feel Blacks, Hispanics, etc. might regret us being here as we folks are well-educated doing White collar jobs earning mostly by the 6 figure American $$ whereas mostly they are living lower middle-class lives (well the majority of them). I believe 50 yrs down the road, as there will be many, many more Indians, I believe hate crimes might be more! Hope this doesn't happen. (I am reminded of the article I posted couple of months ago here in the GD forum regarding stand-up comedy featuring Immigration issues, where the comedian remarks how in future, Whites will be minority only... leaving us Indians to face racial heat from other nationals!!).

What do you think of P J Ji, Krish Sir?

Have you not read his 'story' written earlier in our forum?

No direct staring but only following, even in that story! :D

Dear Sis,

Ram read out this news to me and so knew it. I immediately thought of Naina Sir! :)
And..... Thanks for your compliment for my 'free advice'! :yo:

A very useful post dear for the novices
as well as the seasoned visitors! :clap2:
I manage the communication so that
we do not get into trouble with anyone
due to impaired hearing or wrong body language!
British accent and Bharata naatyam training do help a lot! :thumb:

Hats off to the people who managed to read the OP!
Sorry, there was a problem in the browser, so my post was losing

We have visited USA eight times so far and never got into trouble
either with people or the law. ..
For most people, this is not a problem. But if you read the original
article, it says he is a farmer from a village in Gujarat, who knows
no English. The son should have advised hi
m.

Dear Prof N_M,

The son must not have left the old man walk by himself
in an unknown country speaking an unknown language! :kev:

If it is not 'hand up and kneel down'
it will become 'hands up and pants down'-
since the pants will be soiled by both the
liquid and solid waste due to the fear factor! :tsk:

Whether you like it or not, it is a FACT that many Indians have the habit of Starring, peeping, habits.

Everybody sizes up others all the time. Some make it momentarily and others linger a little longer.
According to my younger family members lecherous looks, sometimes a long stare and sometimes making vulgar comment is common in India.
I agree with your post.

How police behave to enforce law and order, is matter of the State, Federal government can not enforce it. Homeland security and FBI is trying to get a uniform code, but it is not happening.
In the state of Arizona, if you look "suspicious"(?) and you do not have identification they can arrest you and call immigration services to deport you.
Like Nainaji said you should not run into problem. Knowing the Language and local laws, is important. People take their privacy very seriously. I would not approach a unknown house, people will sometime SHOOT first and then ask questions later.
ALABAMA is still in the south USA, and there is lot more prejudice there.

I agree with your

Right.

US is heaven. Sample this Watch: Woman harassed more than 100 times walking in NYC

And this Watch: A woman walks around the streets of Mumbai for 10 hours to recreate the viral NYC video, doesn't get catcalled even once!-BuzzNews - IBNLive Mobile

Video shows the police brutality on an innocent Indian...I really feel sorry for the hapless grand father..Let all the Indians living in US follow the 5 commandments as suggested by RR Madam (Really appreciate this) if they need to live in respect...Do understand that there is heightened threat in US and police surveillance is higher!
