Controversial former IPS officer D G Vanzara, an accused in the fake encounter cases of Ishrat Jahan and Soharabuddin Sheikh, who is out on bail since February 2015, holds a press briefing in the wake of David Headley's deposition today that Mumbra girl Ishrat Jahan was a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist.
Vanzara said there was nothing new in David Headley's deposition, but the Gujarat police's stand has been vindicated. "What everybody knew has come before the court now," the former IPS officer said.
He also quoted from the Gajwa Times, the LeT mouthpiece, which said Ishrat was a member of the terror group.
"Fake cases of fake encounters were filed against the Gujarat police. The encounter was genuine. Ishrat Jahan was portrayed as an innocent student. It was propaganda. A national lie has been exposed by Headley," he said.
When asked to relate what happened on the day Ishrat was killed, Vanzara said he cannot speak on the matter since it is subjudice.
"As a female, I have all respect for Ishrat, but what was a student doing with three terrorists? Two of them were confirmed Pakistanis. Ishrat was killed in counter firing by the police. Some terrorists get apprehended, some get encountered," he said.
"There are political conspiracies and those who encounter terrorists get victimised. The Gujarat police is a target of political conspiracy. Headley's testimony will be useful for our stand, but we had no doubt even then that Ishrat was a terrorist. So, Headley's certificate is not necessary for the Gujarat police but he may be used as a defence witness.
"The target of Ishrat and other terrorists was Gujarat CM Narendra Modi. Ishrat Jahan's mother is a citizen of India. She has a right to express her opinion within the parameters of law," he said.
