!!!

You are only partially right...marks are important for knowledge and to secure a good job to lead a comfortable life...But marks isn't everything in life.

I still feel human values is everything in life.

I have seen people with intelligence..money and status in life who do not have human values.

End product of education is character..if we do not have character our whole life is lost.

I have read about lot of top business enterpreneurs like Steve Jobs whose highest education everybody knows. In fact some of them shine better than top ranking IITians.

Mark does’t decides the fate of the individual.

It is the ‘will’ that decides the fate.:-)

Exceptions do not prove the failure of the rule.
Recognizable achievements are the passport to get you in the door. Once inside you can show your worth. Marks and educational qualifications are that passport.
Let us not kid our younger generations Good education is needed in general to get you that interview for the job. Your achievement in terms of earning power is 99% in your resume for average person.
There will be exceptions, but don't bet on it.
We love to quote the exceptions, but generally one does not qualify for them either.
Happiness is completely different.

Renuka JI –

I suggest you take a tour of the BIMARU states next time you are here. you will stunned, shocked beyond belief at the level of poverty & their terrible lives. You will quickly forget about the human values talk & then focus on immediate social schemes for food, water, shelter, education, Jobs, money, etc.. to uplift these unfortunate people. Human Values comes after "basic survival", and education is that "ticket to survival".

On a side note, you will then realize what leap the South states have done in the last 20 yrs post liberalization. (most of the states were all at similar level to the BIMARU till 1990) & why ordinary people in TN adore Jaya & praise her “statesman” work done in the social sector instead of focusing on the corruption issue of 2.2 CR or 22 CR etc..

Recently one of the folks here was saying when a child is born in rural areas/villages, it is given 750 Rs along with necessities to take care of the kid. So you can see people here in TN have moved beyond basic food, water, shelter to childcare!!

Not to forget, you will then realize what a bogus all these garibi hatao, ache din slogans are… & support my views to push for “highly educated, highly qualified, highly competent, highly meritorious - Genius/Brilliant”politicians like PV Narasimha Rao to power so they can transform the lives of these 100s of millions of people… instead of electing the “unpad gawars” !!!

Cheers,

VB JI - One can count on the fingers how many people are like Steve Jobs, who have achieved despite dropping out of school/colleges. But you cannot count the "100s of millions" - will reach more than a billion if you look at the entire world, who have lost out on opportunities due to "lack of education" !!

Mark is not everything in life. There are lot of things beyond scoring good marks.

Tamil Nadu had a Chief Minister by name Kamaraj and his period was called as Golden period, though we had number Chief Ministers thereafter some of whom are well educated.

I can cite lot of people, great political leaders, business entrepreneurs who are school drop outs.

It is important and nice to score good marks and my point is scoring good marks is not definitely everything in life.

Happiness is derived by helping others, serving the poor and not by scoring good marks and thus enriching one's personal life.

VB JI - I would request you to also "look at the tragic lives of people" who failed to "score the minimum 35 passing marks"... this will run in to 100s of millions in our country !!!

In the west, some "mahanubhavas" proclaimed - "you should not push your kids, you have to allow them to do what they want in their lives, etc.." & this went on for years. these kids lost out completely in life & most ended up in food stamp situation. and then "same mahanubhavas" came back recently roaring with a new title "Tiger Moms are back" ... How it is so important for Moms to push their kids to study hard in life... LOL !!!

I don't know which Westernized Indian wrote such things in this forum in the past... it is also the American Indians and Chinese (Asians in general) who push their kids to the most! It should be in the news that 2 Tamilian kids in America won the national spelling bee in a tie, it has been a trend for American Indians to be on the limelight with anything to do with the studies, thanks to their pushy parents (who also spend a tremendous amount of time for their kids' causes). It is an unbreakable trend that majority of American Indian kids make it into MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, etc. as it is an American Indian's dream that his kids realize what he did not get! And they push their kids as usual to achieve things academically!

And yes, it is to the kids' benefit that he/she gets blessed with pushy parents, for marks are everything in life! JK ji is 100% right, he is practical!

Dear Jaykay,

I never had pushy parents..in fact they used to keep shouting at me 'Renu..go to sleep..stop studying"
I loved studying so much that even when my exams were over I would be still studying!LOL

The reason is cos I feel knowledge is different from exams..one might score high marks in exams but how much they retain in their brains after exam is a different matter all together.

I myself do not push my son to study..I tell him to be constant in studies and to try his personal best and also to view failure and success as stepping stones for a brighter future and not to be carried away with success or be dejected with failure.

I feel that formula works well..we should prepare a child for both success and failure..handling both boosts the EQ and stress handling capacity of a child. Very few parents talk about failure to their children..I have noted too much emphasis on success produces stress and an unhealthy jealous competition among children these days..this carries on when they start work and work ethics suck becos of this.

My son does well in exams even though he is not a book worm.

I like a person to be an all rounder and have good human values.

Happiness has very little to do with academic achievement.

May be I view life totally thru different lenses.

I think it is only a smear campaign to proclaim that pushy parents outright overlook teaching their children how to handle failure and how to make it the best out of the worst situations in life. Infact, it is quite opposite - as they push the kids to attain the topmost position, it is themselves as well as their kids who are likely to face failure for the topmost position is hard to get. So they must emotionally as well as socially prepare to embrace failure more often, and thus be more open-minded and welcoming of their opponents!

Same thing can be said of the personality development - there is no evidence to prove that pushy parents do not allow for their kids to grow into mature and all-rounded personalities. This is all an individual case. There can be pushy parents who only criteria is material and academic success of their kids, and pushy ones who are also equally good in all ways. Like there will be similar ration among the non-pushy ones too. In general, being non-pushy is out of the norm, to me it also shows some degree of failure as a parent, since every parent only wishes for his/her child to shine academically.

Infact, the academic superstars that I know here are all masters in other areas as well - they shine equally good in sports, music, learning foreign language (proficient in several languages), etc, because it is the same pushy parents that want their kids to shine in everything! It is truly a delight to observe such kids.

I have been excellent at studies myself, and won few medals as stated elsewhere... I honestly say that this gave me the confidence I needed to change my line of work to a completely new field as the time demanded! So in the essence, it is all about one's confidence.

In my experience, nothing is general and therefore it is nothing else but a smear campaign to view pushy parenting all in a negative light. I have seen truly remarkable, friendly, humane kids come out of the combination!

Jaykay Ji,

How can you overlook the self-made millionaires. There are lot of big guns world wide who are not good in their Academic education. In fact the world is the teacher which has taught them lot of lessons in life to meet out the challenges which these colleges and universities have miserably failed.

They don’t moan for their failures but with hard work, iron will, burning desire, dedication, ambitious, etc overcome all odds and shine in their life. In fact most of them are millionaires now.

I have been seeing number of them at Chennai and know that such personalities do spread all over the world.

There are lot for whom their degree would not have taken them anywhere. And such people educate themselves and learn to lead a comfortable life. They own a Ferrari and one fine day they will be transformed into a monk! Such is life!

Academic Education is important but it is not everything. They are lot of things which these colleges and universities don’t teach. They are personalities who don’t work for money but will make the money work for them!

Cheers.:-)

Jaykay ji,

I don't think people realize how hard it is to get into IVY schools of USA - one needs a SOLID GPA from 9th grade onto 12th, get fantastic SAT scores and get recommendation letters from topnotch professors, and also be an all-round accomplisher in many, many other ways! Such things do not come to anyone by themselves - they NEED TO BE CULTIVATED. Sure, there can be ordinary accomplishments like getting a degree from some ordinary University (and mostly purchased with money at that!) - but to be topnotch, one needs to work that hard! And it comes for the most time only with some amount of coaching and guidance and involvement from pushy parents!

It may not strike to most of us that being topnotch is desirable - but in many ways it is! Especially in professional settings. There maybe a few who win in life out of hard work and god's grace, but some degree of parental pushiness only comes as an advantage to most, like having an above average IQ! It is a gift from god!

Thanks.

Marks indicate only how much one has mugged up or how well he or she has understood the subject. The true success in life depends on how good he is in the application of knowledge gained.

One guy in my extended family is a very good natured person but scored low in his + 2 exam!

Even after having more than a decade of service, he is asked for his mark sheet, when he applies for a new job!

There ARE achievers without good marks but for high salaried jobs, good marks are essential!

I fully agree with this..I used to score real high in college but college did not teach me about the real world out there.

Going to work for the 1st time was a shocker to me cos the attitude of some senior doctors were shocking.
There was so much politics, back biting..trying to project others in bad light and some trying to lie to get into the goo books of their bosses.

Sometimes people were not interested to just do their job and go home..they were more interested in finding fault with co workers.

Then you realize that education and success need not always lead to character...a total waste of education.

Life isn't always about being No 1.

No 1 is for those who want to be in the race of time.

For those who are sincere enough to prefer human qualities..success comes to them automatically without to even be in the race of time.

True success is a Happiness Index...and everything falls in place.

The present day education focuses only on earning money in the future but totally disconnects itself from earning character and values...half the problems in the world are created by people who are intelligent but without values.

Well said Doctor Mam,

My point is mere academic excellence is not everything in life. There is lot more to learn and achieve.

Recently some one has wrote in this very same Forum about an individual, who was an IIT and IIM graduate. But this individual out of greed established organisations and swindled the deposits of lot of persons who trusted him. It was their life time savings and terminal benefit that was swindled. Now they are vertually in street. Will the parents of this IIT and IIM graduate feel happy for their son’s academic excellence. In fact this individual is in trouble now and may face the consequences ultimately.

Marks don’t mean everything in life.

To sum up excellent study does not mean excellent life.

A request, P J Sir! When you post images, please UNCHECK the thumbnail.

Seeing the images in two different sizes sometimes irritates!

Rajiji you are right.
90% of achievers had good educations. Maybe 10% achievers did not get good marks or education. So when you advice younger people you should encourage them to get good education, in good school, and with academic excellence. If for some reason they do not get good marks you pray that they are lucky.
It would not be a good idea to tell young people that education does not matter or marks do not count (unless they are Ambanis).
