Nara,

Is not US doing this to prevent its soil from being used for terrorist/anti-national activities....No doubt they are crossing the limits & going over board...But how do you draw a line when you are in the radar and even a small slip up will be costly?

vgane, did you read the interview?

Given the kind of extensive surveillance US is engaging in -- like spying on Dilma Rousseff, Petrobras, etc. -- it is highly unlikely that US is not spying on Indian Government and Indian companies at the highest levels, this includes various ministries and cabinet meetings. Are you comfortable with all this in the name of preventing terrorist attacks?

FYI, this kind of mass and extensive surveillance has very little to do with threats of terrorist attacks. Dilma of Brazil took US to task in her UN speech. She cancelled State visit to D.C. on account of this. Even some US lawmakers are speaking against it. But not India, it must be a matter of national shame that IG is silent about it. India is prime target for US surveillance and there is nobody in IG willing to even mildly object. There is no other country on the face of this earth that is more subservient to US than India.

thanks ....

Nara,

I have read the interview word to word..In India we have suffered the worst from terrorist activities be it Al Qaeda type or Maoist violence..

The public is frustrated with the Government on account of failure to stem the rot

They are not bothered a bit about the surveillance...In fact if you conduct a poll public will welcome that

I agree with your sentiment that USA is doing things beyond the threat of terrorist attacks

As far as having moles in all cabinet meetings & ministries, it is a tragic commentary on our so called independence...

This is more shocking..US spied on space & nuclear programs too....
Ha, now you catch on, this is what I was talking about, it is not the terrorists US is spying on, it is your ministers, PM, corporate leaders -- unless you think these are terrorists ......

1. Because it is Snowden and USA we hear this much atleast. Do we know how much of snooping is done on India by China and what is the volume they are holding? And for that matter do we know atleast what Pak is doing in this area?

2. When a nation has the ability to gather data by snooping it will certainly do that on friends and foe. What matters is what use it is put to. If US does armtwisting when they come to India for business negotiations using the info that they have in their hands, it is for the Indian Govt. to tell them plainly to go and hang and withdraw from that deal.

3. To cry hoarse that snooping is bad and that America is a bad boy possessing sensitive info (for instance the high dpi resolution images of the intimate moments of a Congress neta on the terrace of his penthouse apartment with his lady love) is unbecoming of a mature nation in this century. Every country in the world snoops, each according to its technical advancement and ability. If it was observing through a high resolution binocular the lip movements of the target and writing down the conversation it is today hacking into a server.

The rules of the game change with time and players have to be aware of it and move on. No tantrums and no complaints please.

The grapevine news is if manmohan singh does not sign the nuclear deal, US will give visa to modi!

Non invasive tools are also available.

Does it matter what US does to us? Secular indian government can do more damage to people and country's reputation.

Baba Ramdev was detained in UK for two days. This is what happened.

"It transpired that a coded notation, visible to scanners used in airports, had been imprinted in Baba Ramdev’s passport by the authorities at New Delhi immigration control, as he was departing for the UK. Such a notation is reserved for terror suspects and drugs warlords and prompted an instant red alert when Baba Ramdev arrived at Heathrow. It would seem that the highest political authorities in New Delhi sought to disrupt Baba Ramdev’s travel abroad, to the UK and US, where he was participating in various events connected to Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary. It can only be inferred that they have become so fearful of his campaign against corruption and support for political change in India that they were prepared to sink to the lowest depth imaginable."
