Hi All, I am Geetha staying in Bangalore, Karnataka. I am retired from Government service but still active by working for a private firm. I have two sons, both of whom are working in Bangalore. I like to learn more about slokas, the daily pooja vidhanam (that is the timing of doing pooja). I am a single parent. At times, my mind is not in my control and I find it very difficult to come out of it. I dont feel like doing any pooja or chant slokas. Like it never happens. I tried many times to come out of this situation but I am unable to. Request a strong advise so that I dont stop doing pooja (its like mantrichu vitta kozhi madiri i am unable to lit the lamp or chant the slokas) and something crushes my heart and never allows me to chant and go near the God. Its very difficult but I am unable to come out of it. Thanks for anyone's honest guidance / advise... Geetha

Madame: Welcome to the forum. You are not alone in the predicament you find yourself in. If you are not able to do the pooja regularly, do not worry. Doing pooja regularly is not the only way to achieve peace of mind. Personally, I found that reading chapters of the Gita regularly gives you a better medicine. It does not have to be in the original Sanskrit. Read the English translations, if Sanskrit is too difficult. Different translators have different perspectives. May be, take it as a job to prepare a better summary, and post it here in the forum. I bet you will get over your blues in no time.

Gita 4:11
ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham
mama vartmanuvartante manusyah partha sarvasah

Madame: The simplest thing you can do is as per Gita 9:26

पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति ।
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः ॥

patram pushpam palam thoyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati
tadaham bhakthyupahrutam asnami prayataatmanaha

Whoever offers Me with devotion, a leaf, a flower, a fruit or even water,
I accept that pious offering made with pure heart-felt devotion.

Welcome to this Forum. Do not worry. Try to spare some little time every day, if you have, to visit the
Temple nearby and stay put at the Sannidhanam of the Presiding Deity. There are many Yoga practices
to attain or develop concentration. Do one thing at a time and set aside your specific time to visit the
Temple regularly. You will find a change in you slowly. Any Vitamin deficiency can also cause difficulty
in developing concentration. Iron deficiency is one such thing. Take nourishes Food and Juices
(rich with Vitamin C). Black Tea with Lemon gives a good amount of concentration. Try do a thing
wholeheartedly. You will find a change in you within a fortnight.

Go through the Vedanta Spiritual Library and Stotraratna Sites, where you will get plenty of
information about Slokas/Stotras, etc. which will give you a stimulation.

All the Best.

Dear Geetha,

Let me advise you as a doctor.Try to set aside some time and wonder what is troubling you.
There is something that is bothering your mind hence unable to concentrate.
You mentioned you are a single parent..may be you are facing stress in life.

When our mind is troubled its impossible even to focus on God.Thats why you feel unable to pray in the manner you want.

Have a heart to heart talk with someone you trust and try to find out whats troubling you.

Do not rush into elaborate chantings and poojas..try out a simple relaxing exercise first of sitting down quietly in your pooja room and focus your mind on your Ishta Devata.
Do not even think of lighting the lamp even yet.

Try to relax your mind..do this for a few days..doesnt matter even if you miss a few days. It should not stress you up and no one is taking attendance for you too.

First few days try just to calm yourself and through out the day you can try listening to what ever songs you like even film songs is fine as it can help us relax.

Try not to get too religious too soon..even watching movies is fine after all god is in all forms even in Shah Rukh Khan..so go see which movie you like.

Ok next step is..once you are relaxed..try to ask yourself what is troubling you?

Try to figure out what the problem is..if you can solve it find a solution if you cant solve it leave it to God to show you a way out.

In life sometimes not all problems have solutions..some problems are lessons for us to learn from..so no use cracking our head trying to figure out too much.

Once you are done at this stage..I guess you should be ready to do poojas the way you desire.

Most important..do not compare yourself with anyone else in terms of religious discipline.
No two people are alike and God loves everyone the same anyway.

take care
renu

From what you have described, you seem to have got into this rut only recently. If you don't mind responding, could you please tell us if your sons are taking care of you. If they are married and have gone their ways, leaving you to live alone could explain the problem you are facing. I hope our forum colleague Renuka would concur.

In any case, you need to be interacting with forum members frequently, in order that we can alter/modify our suggestions to suit your needs.

While welcoming the new members, I want to make a request to them. Though it is optional, you might give at least a little bit about you in your profile so that it would make it easy for others to interact with you better. In many cases, we do not even know the gender of the person and hence end up addressing a woman as Sir!

As a senior member of this forum,I would suggest that we may make a format and request the people intending to join the forum to fill up so that the vital personal details are not missed out.

One can give a brief description and their reason for their joining (their expectations). But, I dont welcome the idea of anyone giving the personal/private details - D.O.B, address, Phone#s etc. except for advertisements (matrimonial/business). As, there are always virus/scams etc. , it is wiser to maintain privacy of identity. Indians generally lack the idea of security.

Respected sir,
I welcome your suggestion. You may prescribe atleast the most essential
details that may be shared as introduction by all members and perhaps this may help to
interact valuably.
Regards,
Srinirajaram.
