TMMK leader Jawahirullah claimed,[SUP][97][/SUP] "There is a danger that the public may view any Muslim with a beard as a terrorist waiting for an opportunity to plant a bomb." ( excerpt from Wikipedia)

The public started viewing any Muslim, not only the ones with beard but also those without beard, as bomb wielding terrorists ever since their first act of terrorism. It has got registered and recorded in the mind of every Non Muslim, and strange enough, also in the minds of many wise, cultured, gentle, right thinking, sane muslims.

It does not require a feature film to generate a negative public opinion about muslims.

Dear Raghy,

I don't think JJ as a person did that. It is the government banning, is it not? I can't see anythingpersonal in this

In Tamilnadu JJ is Government and Government is JJ. It is another story that JJ is only the face of a powerful combine of a middle caste conglomerate which will do anything to grab power and retain it. It will go to the extent of pervading all political parties and thus always it remains in power. JJ can not do anything about this because a பொம்மை in a பொம்மலாட்டம் has no choice. For JJ and the underlying casteist bosses muslim votes are needed in the coming parliamentary elections. Kamal's Vishwaroopam is a small sacrifice to be made in the altar of expediency. Moreover the theatre mafia is a powerful block in the film business. Kamal could have been a little more realistic. But being a brahmin (however vigorously he may contest this by saying stupid things like பூணூல் முதுகுசொறியத்தான் etc., his genes cannot disown the chemical code embedded in them) he believed too much in the satva guna (call it adult ego state if you want) of the various stake holders and so has lost his case. I hope he becomes chastened by this experience. The delay and the different dates of release will sap the earning potential of the film and he will end up with a huge loss (just a day is enough for the video labs to do some overtime work) even if he wins his case after just two or three days. Wait and see how this is played out. Rajini has taken care to make appropriate noises, just adequate and not yet adequate enough to make his fans to take to streets. All are playing a complicated game here.

Cheers.

A rare melody from movieland
- Rajini speaks up for Kamal, appeals to Muslims to allow screening of Vishwaroopam
Superstar Rajinikanth today spoke up for Kamal Haasan in a gesture that recalls the title of their first film together, Apoorva Raagangal (Rare Melodies), 38 years ago.

“I know Kamal for 40 years. He does not hurt anyone. The very fact that he screened the film (Vishwaroopam) to Muslim friends ahead of the theatrical release only shows his love and regard for them. So I request them to give up the demand for the ban on the film for which Kamal has spent Rs 100 crore and has invested his sweat and blood,” Rajini said in a statement today.

Rare indeed was the voice as the rest of the Tamil film industry mostly played mute spectator to what is turning out to be the biggest challenge for Kamal Haasan in his half-a-century in films as he battles to save Vishwaroopam. But till late tonight, some of the organisations that had sought the ban remained unmoved.

The spy thriller dealing with terrorism has been banned for the time being in Tamil Nadu and screenings were suspended or called off in several southern cities today for fear of backlash from a section of the minorities. But the movie was screened at several places in Kerala amid protests that forced the suspension of some shows. A judge will watch the movie and decide if it can be screened in Tamil Nadu without hurting religious sentiment.

I personally feel that all these things are pre-planned. The ban will be lifted after a day or two and then the crowds going to look at the "banned" film will be much more. I think this was a last minute idea to prop-up a film which would otherwise have flopped.

Any one in agreement?

Normally the drama before a film is released is a pre-planned one to get people more excited to see it but in this case Kamal has been punished for taking the bold step to telecast the film directly through DTH . There is one group which is working to cause maximum hurt to Kamal and they are quite successful in doing so .
First they have got success in the DTH by getting Kamal to postpone the same .
Second they have prevented Kamal from making huge money on 3 holidays i.e 25,26,27 after its immediate release by getting this temporary ban .

No doubt Kamal will be successful in getting a favorable verdict from the court but that group has caused the financial damage to teach Kamal a lesson for going straight with the DTH .

Kamal has antagonised the ruling establishment by openly pitching for P.Chidambaram's candidature for PM....With Modi on the ascendancy across India, it is natural that the CM of TN will align with him...With this movie ban, TN CM has nullified any future opposition from the Muslim lobby for aligning with Modi

Understand that there are few anti brahmin dialogues in this movie...Will the Brahmins association take up the cudgels on behalf of the community?

For the first time the media, film industry, political parties are opposing a muslim group action, but without directly naming them. A new development. Very interesting. Like Don Brown's Da vinci code which carried a caption that there was no truth in the plot of the movie, kamal may have to settle for a caption - there is no truth, there is no taliban, there is no afganistan, no atrocities.

There is a tambram character connection in the movie; nirupama, a tambram newyork based nuclear oncologist; viswanath, nirupama's husband is an effeminate bharatanatyam dancer/teacher, with an assumed pseudonym for islamist warrior washim ahmed kashmiri (with a tamil mother and a kashmiri muslim father).

The Madras high court on Monday advised actor Kamal Haasan to try and settle the controversy surrounding his big ticket film,Vishwaroopam.

Justice K Venkataraman while hearing Kamal Haasan's petition against Tamil Nadu government authorities' orders of prohibiting the release of his film on January 25, said that the court had to take into account the state government's law and order concerns, communal amity in the state and also the actor's investment in the movie.

"Why don't you negotiate the matter and settle the issue amicably?" asked the judge.

Responding to the advice, Kamal's senior counsel P S Raman said, "The hero and director of the movie had returned to Chennai only this morning, and I will discuss the matter with him."

The senior counsel further said that they had filed petitions separately challenging the district collector's individual prohibitory orders restraining theatres in the respective districts from screening the film.

To this, Justice Venkataraman said that the main matter, along with the new petitions, could be heard together on Tuesday. He then adjourned the case to Tuesday for further hearing.
The latest development in this regard came after members of the Muslim organisations objected to the film on the ground that it portrays the community in bad light. They claim that the movie is anti- Muslim.
The Rs 95-crore film has been written produced and directed by Kamal Haasan. The movie stars Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur, Jaideep Ahlawat, Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah. Kamal Haasan also plays an important role in the film.

I believe that justice just kicked the can down the road, instead of taking the side of freedom of speech. These kind of protest and arbitrary action by government only muzzles free expression, and can be biased.

I read the above sentence again and again. Could not understand what is meant. Can some one help?

It is rather quite simple. The court does not have the gumption either to confront the state government or the islamist organizations. However, it also sympathizes with the petitioner and understands that banning the movie outright will result in huge loss for the petitioner. Therefore, it has kindly requested the petitioner to resolve this problem in a shariah council. I think a likely outcome is that the petitioner will alter the movie to satisfy the concerned party and all will be well!

That strategy worked for all, until, ten years ago. Now, a days, ie a single day is lost, its all up in youtube/DVD camera print/internet/MMS/Blue tooth etc, and all the producers million dollar is gone up in the air.

I wish, Kamal should have stuck to the decision of airing it first in DTH, in spite of the theater owners threat.. he would have got his money back at least (100cr offer), than being in this plight of loosing 80 percent of his money..

There is a good news. Central govt has come to his aid today, in the court hearing, and raised a very valid point in the court room.

Pointing out that all 31 district collectors in Tamil Nadu passed identifcal orders, citing representations from some organisations and some intelligence inputs, to prohibit its screening in districts, Raman said it was a concerted effort by the state government to stall 'Vishwaroopam'. Either it was based on a general instruction from the government, or there is a constitutional crisis in Tamil Nadu, where all the district collectors felt they could not enforce law and order in their jurisdiction

Aunty JJ has gone mad for publicity, and as usual bumped on another crab, a TB.

aunty JJ apparently was irked with kamal because he attended a recent book launch by our finance minister Chidambaram, where he apparently made some remarks praising PC.

This in light of the fact, that the function, was a veiled launch by PC and his cohorts, towards usurping the CM post of Tamil Nadu, after the next elections.

:)

the mainstream muslim organizations have not commented on the movie. it is the fringe manidha neya movement, which i think, is amernable to political pressure, to sing any tune, to get some attention. esp if in this case, the orders to march comes from JJ.

all in all, looks like roopam is a hit movie under any definition. in toronto, it is running in a 4 theatre cineplex, all 4 showing this movie, and all of them sold out this past weekend, per friends of mine.

personally, i do not like kamal movies. and probably would avoid it.

Moral of the story is clear..

Here is an aunty fighting for political power, and another one fighting to get back the money put in his movie.

An age old indian adage comes here.. a crab pulls down another, and its applicable well to the community too.

btw, by any standards that movie is too good, got to see it online(so sad, piracy__( Poor boy lost his money, rather life time savings.. no wonder his wife left him, for taking this adventurous bets.

Dear Kunjuppu,

I also do not much like kamal movies. In this case he will obviously be showing muslims as very good and patriotic characters. May be after the Sharia Council views it, the hindus will be shown as terrorits; Shinde will be very happy! ;)

It would be ironical to call Kamal as a TB(save for his birth)...He has spilled venom against his own caste....Neither does he care for Hindu tradition & culture

Kamal has always gone where the wind blows....He is an opportunist to the core

As far as this movie is concerned (I heard that it is just an average action movie with lot of drag) despite the ban the movie will run to packed houses on account of the publicity it has received in last one week

Kamal will do anything short of a sunnath and conversion.

This is from jan 30 junior vikatan article:

"On Jan 11, 24 muslim groups, representatives of muslim parties met kamal in his office 'rajkamal' in alwarpet. In his closing remark, kamal said "viswarupam is not against muslims; it is a film against hindu munnani. Ramagopalan will raise objections after seeing this film."

Perhaps kamal though that hindu bashing will please the muslims. I will exercise my satvik weapon - boycott!

Kamal will do anything short of a sunnath and conversion.

Kamal thought he could win the confidence and support of Muslims by showing them the movie before hand and finally ended up with eggs on his face .

Kamal says he is apolitical but look at the drama that he enacted at his residence a shortwhile ago while meeting the media...He threatened to move to another secular state or country

When the 2 member High court judge panel extended the ban on the movie till Feb 5, Kamal now says (as per latest info) that he is willing to modify scenes relating to Quran

Why was he adamant in the first place....The businessman in him speaks/acts now finally

When he has invested more than 100 Crore ,obviously the businessman in him will speak out .
