I hope he goes to the Supreme court. If this trend continues any movie can be banned by some groups objecting to it.

The news is Salman Rushdie is banned in Kolkata because a hundred people held a demonstration at the airport.

So any person/movie can be banned if some groups oppose it.

What is India coming to?

Emotional and Hate / Divisive politics attract more attention .

If Kamal has agreed to his MUSLIM brothers that he will cut certain portions in his Movie Viswaroopam, then he should honor it by doing it.
If he is saying that he will go out of TN to some secular State in India or to some other country, No one can stop him also.

I strongly recommend that Kamal should go to Tirupati to do a mottai(that will complete the process of losing every thing) as penance and pray to Lord Balaji. He may get back part of what he lost. Others have done this and are doing periodically. Ask that liquor baron V. Mallya. He will tell you.

V.Mallya has made a mottai of King Fisher Airlines and what will he advise Kamal now .
I feel Kamal has rubbed the ruling establishment both politically( by praising Chidambaram ) as well as economically ( by taking the DTH route and favoring a rival tv channel for TV rights ) and they are now giving him a taste of what it means to rub with the ruling establishment .
Only thing that can work for him is to do a Sashtanga Namaskaram to Madam and seek Mercy .Even if court gives him a favorable verdict , the theater owners will be at the mercy of the ruling party goons and so the trouble will be far from over untill he makes peace with the ruling establishment .

Dear Shankara_Sharmah,

I feel like 'LOL'ing because it is the norm of this forum to wear on its sleeve, so to say, its intolerance to any truths about Hinduism, some of the acharyas/godmen/godwomen/gurujis etc. When I say the "Forum" I mean the particular group of members who become very vociferous when such topics come up. And the same forum, consisting of the very same group of members trying to oppose muslims who show the same intolerance, and that too without seeing the film, seems very ridiculous to me.

Let us wait till we get to see the movie and then express our views; will that not be more reasonable?

In Tamilnadu any amount of disowning of God and disowning of one's brahmin origin of birth will not cut ice when it is done by a brahmin (born brahmin). The powerful middle castes will not accept you in their company. It is a privileged group which is tightly held together and entry by brahmins and dalits is strictly forbidden. They will use you as the proverbial pickle and throw you away once the main course is eaten. Poor Kamal. He thought all his ridiculing of God ( a la EVR crowd) and all his mocking of poonoolists will earn him brownie points. He would have understood now that he is not accepted as one of them yet. All his crooning of "Thevar kaaladi mannu" has proved to be of no use. A brahmin in Tamilnadu has to carry the cross of his caste identity to his funeral pyre whether he likes it not, whether he is good or not, whether rich or poor, whether he is educated or uneducated, whether he is healthy or not, whether he is successful in life or a failure. Poor Kamal, it is a pity that he did not realise this.

It is becoming a mob state.

What I cannot understand is why should KH go after subjects involving muslims, terrorism and so on? Can he not get any good plot just as we find in some of the latest mallu films like thirakkatha, chaapaa kurisu, elsy enna aaNkutti, etc.?

Kamal and Rushdie pay as Tamil Nadu, Bengal side with culture bullies.

Cultural intolerance stalked the world's largest democracy on Wednesday. The ban on Kamal Haasan's new movie was upheld, prompting him to consider moving to another country, and internationally acclaimed writer Salman Rushdie was stopped from attending Asia's largest book fair in Kolkata.
J Jayalalithaa's Tamil Nadu government was quick to ban the screening of Haasan's new movie Vishwaroopam after certain Muslim groups thought it was religiously offensive.

Mamata Banerjee's West Bengal government pressured the book fair organisers not to have Rushdie over, fearing that the presence of The Satanic Verses author would offend the minorities.

It was clear that politicians still looked at India's many castes and communities purely as votebanks, and were willing to be bullied by even the smallest and most violently intolerant groups.

The dejected but combative Haasan plans to move the Supreme Court after a division bench of the Madras high court set aside a single-judge order that allowed the film to be shown in Tamil Nadu.

"I would go to any other secular state in India, anywhere from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. I don't find it here, I am willing to settle outside in a secular country," Haasan told a crowded press conference early Wednesday.

I feel sad for Kamal Hassan..his film is a very high budget movie and he cannot afford to go into losses at this stage of his life.

Can't anything be done to help him?

After all he has entertained all of us with his movies.

BTW Jayalalitha is also TB..why can't she help a fellow TB that too when he risks losing everything he has ever earned.

I feel so sad for him.

Out here the Malaysian Indian Congress is appealing to Government to lift ban for Vishwaroopam.

I just hope the ban is lifted here.

Malaysian Indian Congress joins calls to lift ban on Kamal Hassan's 'Viswaroopam'

Renukaji

The problem here itself is Jaya Madam . The issue is not simply muslims being offended .That is just an excuse for the ruling establishment in TN to hit Kamal .
I had already mentioned in my previous post here in this thread the deeper issue that precipitated this crisis . Today Karunanidhi has also openly said the same .

This is what Karunanidhi said :
In a letter to party cadres, Karunanidhi said some sections of people are of the view that the actor earned the ire of the state government after he said that a dhoti-clad Tamilian, referring to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, should become the country's prime minister.

Karunanidhi also said that there is a view among a section of people that a television channel close to the ruling party in the state had offered to buy the rights of "Vishwaroopam", which the actor declined as the price quoted was much lower than what the film was sold for to another channel.

Some one in a debate on TV asked a very relevant question. Mohammed of Gazni invaded india repeatedly and with his hoardes shouting God is Great attacked the Somnath Temple and plundered it. This is recorded history. If some one picturises this scene today the religious zealots can object strongly saying that their community is shown in bad light. Can we then rewrite the history and make the invader some one from Indonesia(complete with mongoloid features) and his war cry something like Eastward Ho or some such thing?

On principle and fair play Tamilnadu Government blundered.

On common sense, business sense and maturity Kamal blundered.

On knowledge of law and civil code of procedures Kamal's battery of lawyers blundered.

A bunch of blundering..........presenting a comedy show and making the onlookers shed tears along with the actors. Strange people, strange country. Cry the Beloved Country!!

Dear TBS Garu,

It is not about a film alone..yes each film maker takes a risk when he makes a film cos the film can either be a hit or a flop.

But in this case..the film is not even allowed to be screened...so there is no question for hit or flop itself when the movie is nipped at its bud itself.

That is totally unfair and so sickening to read that it all boils down to politics.

Why does politics have to contaminate everything?

Though I am considered as against brahmins and so, logically, pro- all kinds of anti-brahmins etc., I feel Kamal Hassan is paying not for his naivete but his ego, that, as the "ulaga naayagan" he can do whatever he pleases. Just as this forum predominantly cries foul if some inconvenient truths about our hindu scriptures or past practices are brought to the fore, I think we should allow the same freedom for other communities and religions because all of them are also living within very fragile filmy bubbles of religions. Kamal Hasan or that painter who made naked images of hindu goddesses M.F. Hussein, both belong to the same cadre and calibre and both will have to pay for their indiscretions.

If Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked and plundered Somnath temple, and it is accepted history, it is better that no individual film-maker takes it up as a project for profit-making; let the Government or its agency make a film of that subject for young people for their history knowledge.

Looks like Kamal is still speaking with the State Government to resolve the issue...The Hindi version "Viswaroop" is getting
released tomorrow...Let us see how it performs

Karunanidhi has no moral right to speak on this issue as he has time and again used his muscle power to muzzle opposition...His entire extended family got into film making and distribution jeopardizing the careers of several producers and distributors... I can only say that he is a wily nily opportunistic politician..Acting like the proverbial wolf who is sensing a prey in this incident

let the Government or its agency make a film of that subject for young people for their history knowledge

The purpose for which the film is made is irrelevant to religious zealots. They will still go to the streets and do 'sAlai mariyal'. Any number of inconvenient religious historic facts have been rewritten in diluted version in India's history books because some one objected to factual portrayal which is an inconvenient truth to face.

One dialogue from viswarupam:

An american police officer questions an indian woman on her religion. She says she is not a muslim."My God has four heads" she says. "The how do you crucify him," asks the police officer. "We don't crucify them, we dunk them in the sea," replies the woman.

Neither the christian officer nor the hindu woman nor psec-atheist-kamal knows that head is untouched during crucifixion.

Dear TBS Garu,

Now it is not the time to think of Movie Karma etc...after all even Bharath( a TB) has played some anti brahmin movies.

In real life do you really think Kamal is anti TB?

He might be unconventional but that does not mean he hates his own community.

A person might not hold up traditions but hatred might not be in his blood.

I read his comments where he said "wealth/money comes and goes and he has to face that eventually"

I feel Kamal is not the money crazy types..he is crazy for art.

Did you see his comments where he said he fails to understand what happened and he does not want even to analyze it cos if he does so he will become like a politician.

His words show he has values.

So now is the time you guys should stand by him and not find fault with him.

Vishwaroopam ban aimed at maintaining law and order: Jayalalithaa
Vishwaroopam ban aimed at maintaining law and order: Jayalalithaa - India - DNA

Chief minister Jayalalithaa justifies ban on Vishwaroopam; cites shortage of police to provide security at theatres. "Had the film maker screened the movie for the Muslim leaders in the beginning itself, all this could have been avoided," said the Tamil Nadu chief minister.

Stating that it was a purely law and order problem, Jayalalithaa said, "I do not have the police force to protect the 500-odd theatres in the state."

"Haasan called the Muslim leaders for a viewing only after he was set for release. And finally, he did call some Muslim leaders for a screening at his house. But after seeing the film, the Muslim organisations met the chief secretary and announced a series of agitations across the state," she added.

"After his return from the US, Haasan sought a meeting with me, but as he had by then already moved the Madras High Court, I could not have interfere in the subjudice case," Jayalalithaa added.

"Following Kamal Haasan coming out in favour of editing parts of the movie on Wednesday, I would suggest that if he and the Muslim organisation leaders can sit together and thrash out an amicable agreement, the Tamil Nadu government would do everything possible to take it from there," she added.

Samajwadi will ban viswaroopam in UP, if found objectionable. SP has added a new twist. It will be banned if it hurts the sentiments of a religious group or caste!

Tamilnadu has not banned the film, (JJ was emphatic in her press meet), but other states may do so.

kamal has cooled down - he will cut on demand, will not approach supreme court.

LUCKNOW: After the ban in Tamil Nadu, Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam may be prevented from screening in Uttar Pradesh if it is found that the film "hurts the sentiments" of Muslims and indulges in "character assassination", the rulingSamajwadi Party (SP) said today.

"Officials concerned would see the film thoroughly; if it is found to be good and entertaining (then it is) fine, or else, it would not be allowed to run in UP," Samajwadi Party general secretary Ram Asrey Kushwaha told reporters here.

"If it indulges in character assassination, it would not be screened in the state...," Kushwaha said.

The veteran actor's spy thriller has run into trouble in Tamil Nadu where the high court yesterday stayed its screening over the sensitive content of the film.

"It appears that there are some portions which hurt the sentiments of a religious group or caste... Officials would look into it," the SP leader added.
