Child like, soft spoken and God fearing: A portrait of Swathi by her sister in an open letter

"Her friend circle was very limited and she didn’t entertain any unnecessary drama," her sister wrote.

Five days after Swathi, an Infosys employee was brutally murdered at Chennai’s Nungambakkam station, her sister Nithya, has written an open letter to counter false claims and dispel rumours about Swathi that are doing the rounds on social media.

Here is the full text of the open letter by Swathi's sister:

Well, I know, I can’t clear or clarify all the speculations raised against Swathi. As her elder sister, I thought I will share some facts about her. She was such a childish, soft-spoken, God fearing, semi-traditional, bubbly and poised girl.

She did not step out of the house without reading Sundharakandam, Thadipanjagam and putting Acharyan archadhai in her head (sacred rice). While commuting to the office by train, she regularly listened to Vishnu Sahasaranamam.

As her office is on the way to Singaperumal temple, she often visited Narasimhar temple and also our Acharya Mudaliandan Swamigal in Thirumaligai. While returning home she didn't fail to visit Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Choolaimedu.

For some unknown reason, no one came to her rescue, but let this pass. Going forward, let us take an oath in our own little way to help one another. Also, I want to remind the public that it isn’t only the responsibility of the government or the officials’ duties to safeguard the country and the citizens.


It is everyone's responsibility to take care of ourselves, others and the country. Together we can achieve a lot. I am very sure this incident is going to bring a change in each of us. Proud to be an Indian and always love Chennai. Jai Hind.

dear vgane, i wish ygm had not published this message in facebook. it has exploded into vitriol against brahmins and on top of that given the professional brahmin haters more ammunition.

what was the purpose of this post by yg? did it help catch the killer? did he think through the effect this has on the community? we all weep for swathi's parents and her own fate, but we live in a community of people, and his facebook note, has not served either swathi, her family or the tambram community any help. many sympathizers erstwhile have also become critical of him casteising a tragedy.

Dear All, Let me express my views , without any bias on this incident & the opinions given by the cross section of the Society.
1) Rly station is most open space & for this incident --Who else, other than, the Station Master on duty is wholly answerable ? . Along with him the Rly police is ,not only responsible ,But has to be treated as Prime/duty bound Govt employee, to be charged as to how these Two employees failed to take control of the situation First ?
S.M on duty has failed to report ,say within a few minutes of murder, ( first on the spot eye witness is the Book- stall person / if the Rly police had taken him for inquiry public can say that these 2 employees have taken done their duties .
The S.M & Rly Police should have, arranged with the civil police also with no loss of time, before the public start coming to catch the early Trains . It is a fact that Rly Police / S,M do not have real Drive to act upon ?
One more Point is this :-The people in Chennai , by & large never feel like taking the Bull at the Horns , but would relish everything comes up, after the show is Over ( They never face challenges , let alone get into supporting the Hero in reality )
I wish that some in the category of Employee who can pursue this with the Rly authorities & make them feel that you are the Face of the Passengers & you can literally ensure proper administration & ensue Action on emergency basis ?

I know the paper tigers who are encouraging others to fight as proxy. Sometimes it is good to see a mirror before writing a post. You are posting anonymously in a site, at least be honest to yourself. Instead of fantasizing a Movie hero see yourself in the mirror. If you take justice in your hand, you may end up dead, or the police may arrest you, or like TBSji said your family will be hunted down. So what point did you prove by your foolhardy adventure?

Use your phone take pictures and report it to police and the news media. Be smart rather than be sorry.

True..its not easy to fight with armed persons...risk of being killed or injured is also there and being hunted down too.

Unless there are many people willing to put up a fight in a group...a single person can hardly handle an armed killing machine type of person.

BTW a few months ago a out here in Msia a Chinese mother and daughter were attacked by a group of unarmed men in a train but a young man visiting from Chennai fought single handed with this group of gangsters and they all ran away after being hit by the Chennai guy.

His pic was put on social media by the thankful mother and daughter..personally I feel they should not have put his face on social media even as a thankful gesture cos the gang leaders can identify him for a revenge attack.

Well he did take a risk..being a tourist..fighting unarmed with a bunch of gangsters and beating them up.

So heroes from Chennai do exists.

In every track, there are tons and tons of crushed stones with sharp edges for use at the time of emergency. And a bystander can also get raged on seeing such a gruesome killing happening in front of him and can throw them at the target and for which act he need not necessarily be a ‘Superman’. We cannot underestimate the bystanders also.

But what happened at Chennai is something very unfortunate and for that matter we cannot generalise all the bystanders and overestimate the rage of the attacker.

P.S: It is only a thought that may drive one on the spur of the moment to avert the crime and not a suggestion for anyone to follow. And of course, as an obligation to the society we live, one can very well take a risk to rescue the other whose life is in danger.

Ending accusations of the public not calling for help after software engineer S. Swathi was murdered at the Nungambakkam Railway Station in Chennai on Friday last, sources in ambulance service 108 said they received two calls from the station seeking help immediately after the attack.
Medical personnel reached the spot in some time and confirmed that Swathi was dead.
Sources from the Government Railway Police (GRP) said it was untrue that no one had covered the body. “After the medical personnel confirmed that she was dead, a shop owner on the platform covered the body with three shirts and a towel,” said a source.
More digital evidence?
Nearly an hour after the murder took place, forensic experts reached the station. “They have taken photographs of the scene of crime, position of the body, direction in which the blood splashed, blood samples and other evidence. The weapons were also seized. As the texture of the handle was soft, it did not have any fingerprints,” said a police source.
However, the GRP has obtained CCTV footage from Nungambakkam and the victim’s office.
To ascertain if there was a stalker, the police talked to some of her friends and one of them seems to have answered in the affirmative.
“She said she had seen only the side profile of the stalker and that he was dressed shabbily,” a police source said.
S. Nithya, the victim’s elder sister, said Swathi was stalked by a stranger on May 10 while returning from work. “She complained about the stalker to a hawker on the foot overbridge and informed us about the whole episode when she reached home,” she said.

Techie murder: Mobile phone may hold the key

An eyewitnesssaid the suspect neither had a conversation nor an argument with the victim

Thousandsof mobile phones that were active in the towers of various service providerscovering the Nungambakkam railway station area have come under the scanner withinvestigators hoping to zero in on the suspect who killed Infosys employee S.Swathi on Friday.

While police are tight-lipped over Swathi’s call details or text messages, a special team of cyber crime experts are working on short-listing ‘suspicious’ mobile phones that were active hours ahead and after the murder. Even if the suspect had switched off his mobile phone at the time of committing the offence, it would still be possible to trace it had he turned it on in any of the neighbouring tower locations, police said on Wednesday.

Quoting an eyewitness, a senior police officer said the suspect neither had any conversation nor argument with the victim. However, the information that therewas no conversation or argument did not mean that the suspect was a stranger to Swathi.

“Going by the CCTV footage, the suspect enters the premises at 6.31 a.m. and is seen walking out at 6.42 a.m. He spent just 11 minutes, which includes the time he took to walk to and from the crime scene to the surveillance camera location.Maybe, he spent barely two or three minutes waiting for the victim and attacking her...,” the officer said.

I agree with former CBI Director Raghavan but who is going to teach the youngsters to be brave and socially more responsible ? Are Schools ,Collages and Comapines ready to impart these sort of training to youngsters and keep them fit and ready to handle these sort of challenges ?
I am all for regular training of people right from Schools , Collages and also went they enter workforce to be well trained as responsible citziens to handle difficult situations ( like this Swathi Murder and also calamities like floods , terrorist attack and other natural calamities ) .

In Tamil Nadu, we have an Organisation called ‘Home Guards’ which is an auxiliary force to Police Department.

It is a voluntary Organisation and an Unit of Police Department headed by an Addl. Director General of Police. Anyone who has completed the age of 20 can join the Organisation. They are imparting basic training and other advanced trainings which includes, Advance Casualty service course including first aid courses both for men andwomen Home Guards.ii) Advance Rescue course iii) Communication courseiv) Auxiliary Fire fighting and basic fire fighting courses v) Disaster management & relief course vi) Watermanship course. (Watermanship course deals with rescuing people from drowning during flood).

நான் சுவாதி வேலைபார்க்கும் கம்ப்யூட்டர் நிறுவனத்தில்தான் வேலை பார்க்கிறேன். சுவாதியை கொன்ற கொலைகாரனை நான் 2 நாட்கள் நேரில் பார்த்துள்ளேன். கடந்த 10–ந் தேதியன்றும், 11–ந் தேதியன்றும் நானும், சுவாதியோடு நுங்கம்பாக்கம் ரெயில் நிலையத்துக்கு வந்தேன்.

அப்போது அந்த மர்மநபர் சுவாதியை பின்தொடர்ந்து வருவதை நான் பார்த்தேன். ‘‘அந்த மர்மநபர் என்னை பின்தொடர்ந்து வருகிறான். ஏன் என்று தெரியவில்லை. அவன் என்னிடம் என்னை உனக்கு தெரியவில்லையா? என்று கேட்கிறான். ஆனால் உண்மையிலேயே அவனை எனக்கு யார் என்று தெரியவில்லை’’ என்று சுவாதி என்னிடம் கூறினாள்.
இந்த விஷயத்தை லேசாக விடக்கூடாது அவனை கண்டிக்க வேண்டும் என்று நான் சுவாதியிடம் எச்சரித்தேன். அதை பார்த்து கொள்ளலாம் என்று சுவாதி என்னிடம் கூறினாள். ஆனால் அந்த படுபாவி சுவாதியை இந்த அளவுக்கு கொடூரமாக கொலை செய்வான் என்று நான் எதிர்பார்க்கவில்லை. அந்த பாவியை கைது செய்து போலீசார் கடுமையான தண்டனை பெற்று தரவேண்டும். இவ்வாறு சுவாதியின் தோழி தனது வாக்குமூலத்தில் கூறியிருப்பதாக தெரிகிறது.

A week after a 24-year-old woman IT professional was hacked to death at a railway station in Chennai, police on Thursday released a new photo of the suspect.
The photo gives a front view of the suspect, a young man wearing a blue shirt and black pants, carrying a backpack. No further details were made available.
On Sunday, police had CCTV footage of the suspect, showing him crossing the tracks and jumping outside the railway station premises. The footage was acquired from a nearby house.
The probe teams had already come to believe the killer was a stalker, about whom she had told to her father and friends. Her father had not noticed the stalker though he had been dropping her at the station regularly in the last few weeks. The suspect had even stalked her right up to her Infosys office some days, police sources said.
