Looks to be Badanga & hard Idli! He would not have died had they been soft and smaller in size
Man Dies as Idli Gets Stuck in Throat
Palakkad, Sep 9, 2014

An eating competition held as part of the Onam celebrations ended on a sad note as a 55-year-old contender for the title died as an idli got stuck in his throat in a village near here.

According to police, Kandamuthan got suffocated as he downed idlis in quick succession on the Thiru Onam day on Monday.

Though he was rushed to a local hospital, he died soon.

The competition was organised by a village arts club.

Sir,

It is very sad in deed. At least in the coming years, hope the organizers will arrange for soft idlis and thus ensure happy celebration of ‘Onam’. Or atleast, they can restrict the competition for youngsters alone. Poor chap.

Any way do we need such fun at the cost of death of someone....?

Moral: So idli can also prove to be a bullet at times....!!!

Sad to note this.

Choking to death can occur to anyone.

Its important for people to learn Heimlich maneuver so that such deaths can be prevented.

Thanks Doctor...

For others, Heimlich maneuver is a first-aid procedure for dislodging an obstruction from a person's windpipe in which a sudden strong pressure is applied on their abdomen, between the navel and the ribcage.

Unfortunate, but strange indeed.

This incident reminds me of the untimely death of first Air Marshall of Indian Air Force Air Marshall Subroto Mukerjee OBE., who died in similar circumstances on 8 November 1960,in a Tokyo restaurant while having his meal, when he choked on the food which blocked his air passage.
