this is not something that we discuss here often, as farming is not, i think, an area of interest for tambrams, afaik. at the most we have owned farmlands, atleast some of us, but no one i know has literally got his feet dirty and drove the bullocks.

in this context, perhaps, we do not care too much about the new food security bill authored by the gandhis - mom and son.

this article above in current பசுமை விகடன் details how this would be a disaster for the farmers. in addition, all these increased procured grains, we do not have any safe place to store them from harm insects and rats. per sharad pawar.

not much we can do, but disheartening to read of such mass scale badly thought out plan.

Recently there was a neeya naana show, where the farmers complained that the 100 days' work guarantee scheme literally sucked the farm labour out of the farms into welfare receiving people. the counter arguement was that these labourers were dalits and these any day preferred the dignity of a government job, albeit a handout, to working in a dominant caste farm.

that these jobs were in many cases unproductive or over manned, was not disputed, either by the social workers or the workers themselves.

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme - Tamil Nadu

that the farmers did nothing in the show, to dispel this attitude, is telling.

hopefully the government has the right plans to get money to pay for all these schemes. or should i not even go there. nothing is as simple as it looks. in india especially.

also to note, tamil nadu already has welfare schemes which are better than the food guarantee bill, i was told. and this scheme would make tamil nadu a net loser in terms of revenue.
