I hope this is different from the Introduction thread. There is some strong affinity to either a place or locale with which we try to identify ourselves, even though out nativity might be different. And now of course in the forum, we have different nationals as well with roots from India.

MY parents belong to Tirunelveli district and Tanjore district.

I was raised in Chennai but still prefer to tell I am from Trichy - that calm and wonderful town of temples. I spent some 3-4 years there, but I liked that city much better than Chennai and would like to be identified so. Lived in Bangalore but preferred Mysore which was more like Trichy - The Cauvery, Ranganathaswami temple and that serene atmosphere.

For than affinity , we get identified with the place we have stayed for long specially early early years of schooling and college .
Though tamils , I am identified with north indians since my early years I am in delhi .Due to my language [tamil-hindi mix] and dress [avoiding dhoties and opting pajamas and tracksuits], preference for bollywood movies, food habits I identify naturally with delhi.

Only in north I am a madrasi a term used for all south indians and in south a strange breed not like the locals there . most identify that we are not from south very easily and treat us like ETs.

I have tried shouting from house tops that I belong to tanjore district and take tanjore mess food when i am in chennai ,try to see tamil films and go to carnatic music concerts in music season . I am unable to pass off as a southie.

our place of birth and upbring is our cross and we will stand hammered to it it all our lives.lol

Well I was born in a North of Msia and studied there for a short while...then family transfered to central Msia and then transfered again to a little more South and finally settled in a state near the capital city.

But I dont really identify myself with any places I had lived..I just took it as phases in my life..I liked the house I stayed in when I was a teen in Central Msia but its just stops there.

If anyone asks me where I am from..I will tell them my whole story of living in North to Central to almost near capital city now.

But dont really have any affinity to any one specific region.

I was born and brought up in Chennai...We have shifted our residence 6 times in Chennai moving from the bustling Nungambakkam to the calm & quiet Saligramam which is now the address of the elite! However as my jobs in the last 25 years have been outside Chennai, I have not been in touch with Chennai except for 1-2 visits a year

My forefathers were from Thanjavur District..I recently visited my village & was taken aback /astonished with demolishment of my paternal grand parents house and in its place a 2 stored pucca house has been constructed..The village temple has been renovated and is in good shape

I can speak the local Tamil slang...My Hindi is tolerable which is however the envy of many a Tamilian!

Though I was born at Chennai, I had my very first opportunity of visiting this City only during one of my School Excursions.

My parents belongs to Tirunelveli and Kumbakonam. While my mother was proud about Tambarabarani, my father used to argue Kaveri is the best river.

Way back in 1974, I was selected by UPSC and posted at Delhi. But, since there was no chance of my getting transfer back to Chennai and in view of the affinity I developed with Chennai, I have not accepted that offer.

Later during 1976, I got selected and joined in an Office at Chennai.

Visited the place of my father at Kumbakonam and my mother’s place at Tirunelveli. In Tirunelveli, it is a small village and now only very few houses are there.

I thank Chennai and feel proud to be Member settled at Chennai.

And, now, I take this opportunity to invite Members of this Forum to my house, whenever they visit Chennai and I feel that it shall be my proud privilege and pleasure to have them as my guest.

I understand that this Forum is primarily for the Tamil brahmins, but it does not really bar anyone to take part in the discussions on this Forum. However, I took it for granted that our most ever green / active participant Malaysion Doctor happen to be not a brahmin but,s,. I could observe her that she always offered comments, whether it was required or not or whether she knew the subject or not. some of those related to the subject matter, but many of her comments, I use to think it is not Tamil Brahmins comments, whose nature would be different, when commenting on others, especially a lady ?

My ancestors are KLBs. But both grandparents worked in Burma. Dad's father was in an accounts office and mom's father was a

medical practitioner. Parents' wedding was in Burma and soon world war broke out, they lost everything in Burma except some

valuables and fled to India. Dad started from scratch, spent some years in the North, worked as an assistant doctor to one senior

in Salem and then emerged as a very successful medical practitioner in Anaimalai village in Coimbatore district. So, I was born and

brought up there; it is my native village! Even now, if I hear the word Anaimalai, I feel elated and a flash of my childhood memories

make me feel young!
And Kongu nAttuth Tamizh is the best one I like - more than tambram accent! :D

Dear Rishikeshan ji,

I am happy to note that you keenly follow my posts.

Dear Sir..I really do not believe in any stereotype of thinking on how a man or woman should behave and think. In fact I dont even like the word "lady" cos that denotes a lot of cultural conditioning and restrictions.

I try to look beyond the physical and petty differences, cultural identifications and love analyzing minds..I write what comes to my mind most of the while and at least I am honest.

I guess you are not too used to a sense of humor and a frank unrestricted mind but its Ok..you will get used to me eventually.

I seldom see you actively participating in our active threads that discuss philosophy and some religious subjects..may be you could share with us your knowledge.

BTW out here in Forum we are allowed to answer and respond to any post..there is no restrictions as long we have an answer!LOL

So I wonder why you think I offer replies whether I have the knowledge on the subject or not...in fact I think this is not the 1st time you have mentioned this..I have read a similar post of yours before about your "unhappiness' of some of my post....may be some of my post comes across as ignorant..well may be you could have a point too..I am not denying that.

But whatever you say I find you a cute orthodox Maama..striving very hard to make a change in your community..I too follow your post closely...have fun in your next get together.May be you can talk about promoting Sanskrit as you suggested in the Iyers Corner thread.

Happy to note that you keep your mind active..its important for elders to be active...it prevents Dementia.

We need active Maamas like you to make the world a better place .

Keep it up sir..God Bless you.

Though we migrate from place to place due to circumstances like marriage and profession, the place where we are born and bred up during our childhood prevails in our mind. For me good old Kanchipuram (Conjevaram), where I was born and studied will be my native place for ever.

You are correct, Sir! The name of our village has something to do with yAnai, but not the live ones; I :fear: elephants!

There is a nice mountain near our village which looks like an elephant and hence named that way, I guess.

FYI, there is Anaimalai hills nearby and Valparai (vAlpARai) is a taluk situated there.

From Wiki:

''Valparai is a
Taluk and hill station in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu,India. It is located 3,500 feet above sea level on the

Anaimalai Hills
range of the Western Ghats, at a distance of 100 km from Coimbatore and 65 km from Pollachi. There are 40

hairpin bends
on the way to Valparai from Azhiyar. While major portions of the land is owned by private tea companies, large

forest areas continue to be out of bounds. The Government of
Tamil Nadu in collaboration with ITDC initiated Tourism promotion

through infrastructure development including
Resorthotels and Amusement parks to attract tourists. As of 2011, the town had

a population of 70,859.''

One of the happy occasions in my life: When Sri. Venkataraman started the Parambikulam - Aliyar project in a function held in

our village, my younger sister and I sang the prayer song on Lord Ganesha, composed by my grandfather. :thumb:

Dr Renuka, I am really very happy that in reply to what I had written about you, you have amply explained your nature, in that you have no inhibitions & what comes to your mind you express/ write then & there.I had always read your replies & since it all happen to be analysis in a different manner. I take pleasure in helping those who need help, esp. from the lower/ lowest strata like worker .Please do not have even an iota of misgiving about me. I like Humour I like to converse with each & everyone . If you visit Madras, please call on me.
Sincerely,
Rishikesan (A. Srinivasan)

I intend going to valparai on 21st may after visiting retirement home in coimbotore for two days in may as recommended by a member of this forum. . i did not know about these hills. shall look for the elephant

I learn munnar is only about 40 km from valparai . it is also a good holiday place .I intend going there may end.kerala tourism has a nice place for stay .

valparai does not boast of tamilnadu tourism hotels . I feel comfortable with govt agencies . normally their hotels are prime property located in heart of town . they are not commercial and suit senior citizens

when does it rain in valparai? . does monsoon hit there before may end ?what is there of tourist interest in valparai .

great to hear you belong to the place. see in this forum at appropriate times some angel comes out with interesting input of relevance..lol
