Though I was born at Chennai, I had my very first opportunity of visiting this City only during one of my School Excursions.

My parents belongs to Tirunelveli and Kumbakonam. While my mother was proud about Tambarabarani, my father used to argue Kaveri is the best river.

Way back in 1974, I was selected by UPSC and posted at Delhi. But, since there was no chance of my getting transfer back to Chennai and in view of the affinity I developed with Chennai, I have not accepted that offer.

Later during 1976, I got selected and joined in an Office at Chennai.

Visited the place of my father at Kumbakonam and my mother’s place at Tirunelveli. In Tirunelveli, it is a small village and now only very few houses are there.

I thank Chennai and feel proud to be Member settled at Chennai.

And, now, I take this opportunity to invite Members of this Forum to my house, whenever they visit Chennai and I feel that it shall be my proud privilege and pleasure to have them as my guest.

VB
My nativity is Kumbakonam and my mother belongs to Thirunelveli Cheemai. Of course, I can say myself a Madrasee since I am here from 1952 onwards except a few years outside.

Dear Dr Renuka, Thanks. for your spontaneos remarks. I take each word on its true value.
One clarification. I joined this Forum when I was on a visit to Florida , US where my daughter lives.that is about 2 years back. I would like to know that why you have now mentioned that you are a Non- brahmin, a malaysian Etc Did you mention this, initially , when you joined this Forum, though this Tamil brahmins forum does not BAR others to be in this site. I think on some subject matter, when discussed Mr Praveen , I remember to have commented., that the forum welcomes others. ( I request our Founder to correct me if I am wrong )

Dear Sir,

I will tell you my journey to TB forum..right from the start..be patient..its a looong story!

Ok I found this site by chance and I signed up thinking that this site is about Tamils and Brahmins..then after signing up I realized that it was a TB forum and I sent an email to Moderator telling them that I am not TB and they could delete my membership if they wanted..I dont know if my message reached or not cos I never really got a reply.

Then I was quite for sometime and did not log in or read any posts.

After that I got reminders from Forum to log in forum..so then I was curious..

so I logged in and then I was reading some posts etc..was finding it interesting cos it was not as orthodox as I thought it was meant to be!LOL

I saw very interesting posts and some crazy posts too and I thought Ok let me join too.

I was open about my heritage/origins and was open about my mixed heritage of being a mixed caste..everyone here who has known me long enough know that I am a mixed caste. In fact I used to put even my pic but I removed it after I started getting some I love you messages!LOL

Actually I do not go by caste identification but since you asked I am answering .For me I rather just think I am human.

I had mentioned that I am a NB when a fairly new member mistook me for being a Brahmin..so you see since I believe in speaking the truth I told him..I am a NB(the post to which you responded) ..anyway you said you could guess from my writing that I am a NB(good analysis)

Ok back to mega serial on how I joined forum...Initially I was a rather quiet cos its a new place and was unsure..then after a while I became an active member and then the quietness went off and I was even more direct to the point and finally now I am Swarnakka!LOL

So sir...I am here only..I wont go anywhere..but I am glad I joined forum..its a nice place to hang out..where else we can get a forum that hosts all threads right from religious matters to totally humorous posts.

Dear Krish Sir,

My dad has taken all of us to Topslip and Parambikulam
a few times and the journeys are still fresh in my memory. :)

Somehow,
I have not yet visited Valparai! Please 'Google search' for details. FYI, from the terrace of our sweet home in

Anaimalai (now sold out), the elephant shaped mountain is seen! Hence, you may not see the same shape from Valparai!

Many new intros (right from Vendors to friends) ask me you belong to???????? I pity them because I tell long stories.
Born in Rajapalayam-Studied in Madurai-Neyveli-Chidambaram-Coimbatore-Chennai (Tamilnadu)
Studied in Mumbai (Maharashtra)
Worked in
Durgapur (West Bengal),
Ranchi (Bihar-Jharkhand),
Hyderabad (Andhrapradesh-Telangana)
Vijayawada (Andhrapradesh)
Hazira(Surat-Gujarat)
Working in
Kolkata (West Bengal)

So I ask them one simple question; Now tell me where I belong to??
I am an Indian but a Sourashtrian? Again they are confused. Then they talk to me in any one of the above languages for technical discussion.

all of us are in the same boat . I have gone to my fathers village near kumbakonam some fifty years

back as a kid. . I would not be able to tell anyone how to make it to that place from kumbakonam.

. most have a similar story . I understand our old family houses have all been destroyed . all brahmin

agraharams do not exist anymore .

even our next generation cousins etc such as relatives of my parents generation and their siblings ,we

get to know accidentally in some wedding or some such functions when we get introduced to each

other and realise we are related when we investigate further about each other .

migration of brahmins to many places all over the country and abroad , makes nativity only a matter

of claim and no links are left out to tie one to that place. thanks for being helpful.

Dear rajkumar,
I am native of Ralapalayam. My parents are from Kollangondan/ Rajakularaman. My Father was a teacher in S.S Board High school. I studied there upto SSLC
A.Srinivasan (Rishikesan)

I remember my fathers SSLC certificate in the 40's mentioning the Native place ..It is no more mentioned in the school certificates...

I think nativity has lost its relevance to a large extent in marriages..I remember the Marriage Bureau advertisements in the 70's & 80's asking for only Tanjore, only Palghat etc ..With families moving around for employment and studies, many marriages are inter district /inter state or even inter countries within the TB's

So the customs are mixed between the Girl's side and Boy's side...There is going to be more diversity..May be customs would be family driven not district driven nay community (Iyer/Iyengar) driven in the near future

Even food habits now have changed substantially and we try to learn new dishes from place of our stay..In the North most of times we make North Indian dishes

Dear Prof,

Could you please explain more about Sourashtrians? So far as I know TM Soundarajan was also a Sourasthrian.

I have read about this community from Wikepedia but I would prefer to hear more from a Sourasthrian.

sourashtrians settled in Tamil Nadu

A good article about the Saurashtrians

The Hindu : Where they have come to stay

In reply to Dr Renuka;s query, I would like to mention that even earlier to 1930s Sourashtrians have settled in Madurai / they were called in tamil as Pattunool Karar, meaning Silk/ textile trading. some call themselves as Vaishnavites, it so happened that a Lady belonging to this caste came to our house in 1948, seeking me for marriage of their daughter. When we could make out from the talk that they belong to Pattunool , my Mother politely said that her son is too young.

Sourashtrians as I Know (Ich bin Weise)

Some where in 1646 AD due to various invasions by Gajini Mohamed many families migrated from present Sourashtra region of Gujarat towards South and East.

South Migrated - During their migration they passed through (Vindhyas) Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and many settled then and there and rest finally settled in Tamilnadu in Madurai, Paramakudi, Palayankottai, Trichy, Kumbakonam, Tanjore, Salem

East Migrated - They migrated towards Odisha, West Bengal and Assam

Language is Sourashtra which has derived from Prakriti (older than Sanskrit); The language is in general spoken, many words from telugu, kannada, marathi, oriya, bengali, assamese could be seen. Bhojpuri, Mythili, Marathi will look similar to Sourashtra language

Due to this Sourashtra dialects are different as per their settlement place like Madurai, Paramakudi......
There was no script till early 1920s but it was developed later taking the style of oriya phonetics

There was a dispute in Rani Mangammal time in regard to Sandhyavandanam/thread ceremony between Brahmins and Sourashtrians and it was settled by her

My father was called Ramachary Iyengar but my fathers brother called himself Srinivasa Iyer. Hence we have conflicting and divergent views

Sourashtrians in general are non vegetarians (excepting me and my wife, I presuppose); One separate group is there who are exclusively meant for temple pujaris who are vegetarians

We are linguistic minority group as per government. Our total population is approx. 14 lakhs but as per Indian population censes it is about 5 lakhs because many talk tamil and they would like to be identified by more as tamilians and less as sourashtrians.

Recently there is an onslaught conversion of poor sourashtrians to christians

In the above places of Tamilnadu we have our own temples, mainly Venkatachalapathy/ Balaji/Vishnu

We are distinguished by our House names, some thing like surname

Majority is in the almost BPL category

In general marriages are within the community particularly within the above mentioned place identified families.

Thanks for good support

Play back singer A L Raghavan and his wife and actress M N Rajam, carnatic music violinist Kumbakonam M R Gopinath are Sourashtrians.

Are sourasthrrians originally from sourashtra in gujarat . Do they still use atleast some words of

gujarathi.

are they confined to madurai town . have they spread to tamilnadu villages .I understand in tanjore district also there are many sourashtrians .they are also vegetarians following srivaishnavite customs.

Dear Rishikesan Sir,

Thanks for reply and explanation...BTW from your post I guess when you were young you must have been a most sought after person in your locality cos even people from other communities wanted you to be their Son In Law.

Looks as if you can give TBS garu a run for his money..all these while I thought only TBS garu had the most proposals....so move over TBS garu here comes Rishikeshan Sir.

I gave almost summary of 11/2 page about Sourashtrians yesterday. That is banned

Prof.D.V.R.Rajakumar

Dear Prof,

What?? Why banned? Can you check with moderator? may be some glitch caused your post to be deleted.

Even in another thread some member was complaining that some of her posts are not seen..let moderator know cos there could be some technical problem.

Dear Prof,

It cannot be banned..If so you would have got a notification from moderator or admin

Saurashtrians are traditional people...Our ancestral house in Ganapathy Agraharam village near Thiruvaiyaru was sold to a Saurashtrian..We went inside the house last June..The aged parents were managing the house..Almost all their children are all settled abroad...But they would not like to sell the house and move out..so much attached
