Vennira Adai Nirmala a multi talented actress and Bharatha Natyam exponent is also a Saurashtrian..She recently campaigned for AIADMK in Lok Sabha elections

I think her native place is Kumbakonam. Does she belong to Saurashtrian community or Isai Vellalar Community? She was supposed to act in Kadhalikka Neramillai, but subsequently selected for Vennira Adai by Sridhar.

I sent one about America 3 days ago, till now it has not come. I am rewriting the Sourashtra story short from my memory with all dementia taken into consideration of self. (Mogo Kalayoyo Mee Sangariyo - For me Known I tell) - Whatever I am aware from these 63 years I am telling you.

In 1646 Sourashtrians from Sourashtra-Kutch Region of Gujarat like nomads displaced themselves due to the constant invasion by Gajini Mohamed and others. Taht is the time Somnath temple was looted by Gajini

South bound : Many smaller groups went through (Vindhyas) Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and in the enroute many settled in between and majority came and settled in Tamilnadu since the invasion was the least in this region

East Bound : Some more groups went through (Vindhyas) Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal

Language : Sourashtra different from Gujarati but originated from Prakriti (Older than Sanskrit); Due to this many words (of course distorted) from Telugu, Marathi, Kannada have been borrowed and made into Sourashtra along with original. Language sometimes will look like Tulu, Konkani and Mithili (Bihari) also. It was only a spoken language till 1926. Sri. Tho.Mu. Rai developed the Sourashtra language phonetics and lipi and almost 95% of the Sourashtrians have not mastered it including my wife (Atleast I was writing letters to my sister and now I know that is all)

Population : Almost 14.5 Lakhs of Sourashtrians are there in Tamilnadu but as per censes it is about 5 lakhs. This is due to the fact most of the people would not like to be identified as Sourashtrians and in the censes register query they say they are Tamilians and talk in Tamil.

Education : Most of the people of present generation are of 10th pass. Only about 7 % are engineers, doctors, graduates and mostly in the IT field.

Status : Over 90% of the people almost are in the BPL(Below poverty line-Less than Rs.5,000/p.m. family earning) or just above BPL

Profession : Mainly Dyeing, Weaving, Textile business, now they are mainly going for IT

Settlement : Madurai, Palayankottai, Paramakkudi, Viravanallur, Salem, Trichy, Tanjore, Kumbakonam, Chennai, Kanjeevaram (India) USA (about 300 families)

Marriage : Generally within the community. Madurai people will marry only Madurai people. Inter district is not preferred. Nowadays it is different.

Threat : Due to BPL status the conversion into Christians nowadays are becoming rampant

Government : Government has recognised Sourashtra as a Backward Class Community and called as Pattunoolkarar (Silkthread weavers) (which we do not like) or Saourashtrians

Temples : We have our own temples in Madurai, Paramakkudi, Salem, Tanjore, Kumbakonam and Archagas are from Sourashtra - Pandits and normally they marry among themselves and they do not marry other Sourashtrians. Nowadays everything is different. There was a dispute between Brahmins and Sourashtrians during Rani Mangamma time in regard to wearing the sacred thread/sandhyavandanam and it was settled and signed between the communities at that time.

Food : In general almost all are Non-Vegetarians excepting a few percentage (like me and my wife) and Sourashtra - Pandits. Sambar, Amti (Kulambu), Rasam powder combinations are little different from normal Tamils. But nowadays all have been broken.

I am really thankful to my friends of this forum for giving lot of information like famous personalities on their own.

Dear Rishikesan Sir,

Thanks for reply and explanation...BTW from your post I guess when you were young you must have been a most sought after person in your locality cos even people from other communities wanted you to be their Son In Law.

Looks as if you can give TBS garu a run for his money..all these while I thought only TBS garu had the most proposals....so move over TBS garu here comes Rishikeshan Sir.
hi renu,

just info....even now TBS garu is getting proposals....even after married 3 decades ago....i think my raasi play some role in my

horoscope....but i am not able cope with that...becoz of some philosophical thought...

One more information about Sourashtra brahmins . I had mentioned that they had taken Madurai as their town for Textile business & flourished. One more thing happened during the period when ANANDA VIKATAN was publishing Pahuththarivu Potti, every week People fill up the forms & send by post There were Prizes . You will be surprised to know that one Sourashtra Brahmin (name started like Ram---) used to get First Prize almost all the time ?
