Dear Naina Ji

I didn't skip you post # 202. It's just it touched a very delicate chord. I personally know how
a lot of Senior Citizens, in the evening of their lives are being subjected to worse treatment
by their own children settled in the US.

It's a heavy and disheartening topic. I chose not to respond to your post, not out of any disregard
or disrespect to you - just that I didn't want to spoil everybody's mood.

P.S. Hope you don't mind the bit of humour, in an otherwise heavy topic.

Mr. Anand Manohar ji,
Your post may be misunderstood as that children living in US alone misuse their parents, or that all children living in US abuse their parents. The facts are far from it.
My brother's organization Dignityfoundation helps a lot of seniors being abused by their children.
In India it is happening a lot.
Elder Abuse Awareness Day

On the other hand I know of seniors who are extremely happy with their children living in USA and showering their parents with all kind of support. I have my family members who can vouch for the love of their children, and I have first hand knowledge of it.

Dear sir,

Tell your daughter that weight changes by 1 kg throughout the day.
So weighing ourselves 3-4 x a day will only increase our anxiety.
Tell her weighing herself some 3-4 x a week should be alright.

It's good to be weight conscious but as long we do not miss out in our nutrients.
Tell your daughter if she is cutting oil in her food make sure she gets healthy oil in the form of nuts and also Avocado has good healthy oil content.

Being weight conscious should not make us undernourished so make sure her protein intake and vegetables intake is sufficient.

She can restrict rice if she wants.I myself only eat rice once a week.
The other days I take other forms of Carbohydrates like Oats,Corn,Pasta,Quinoa,Chapati, boiled sweet potato.

So we have to strike the right balance.
Tell your daughter working out on threadmill only burns fat and if done excessively we can also lose muscle.

So tell her do not exceed 40 mins of cardio on thread mill and also lift some light weights for toning of muscle so that metabolism increases.

When we build some muscle we can eat a bit more and still not gain weight.

On certain days..she can have higher intensity interval training where one runs at higher speed on thread mill for some 30 seconds then walk for 60 seconds then sprint again for 30 seconds.
Do this for not more than 20 minutes.
This is called interval training...may be just once a week she can do interval training.

Tell her that in between work out it is also important to have rest days where we do not exercise to rest joints and muscles.

Moderation is the key..believe me it works.

I have been doing this since the age of 30 and I can still fit into the clothes I wore when I was 25.

“..the officials running that home are all set to send him away! “ Whereto?

I think we need to improvise solutions to such problems. I have some ideas, but I would like to hear from others first.

Prasad Ji

There was no generalization in my statement. My Mother and Aunts too shuttle between India and the
US and are having a fairly cushy time - summers they go there and winters they come here.

I cannot use my family members as a yardstick. As I said before, this topic hits a very delicate
thread in me and request that I be allowed to recuse myself.

True, one size cannot fit all. However, we may all have heard from friends and relatives about the uglier side as well, and sharing such anecdotes would provide people with the kind of preemptive steps that could possibly help.

dear renuka ji !
thanks for good piece of advice which i conveyed to her also.
i have attached the article of THE HINDU also which is given below
A well developed personality can cover up many defects in a person’s appearance. So the young girls need to strive to become wholesome and attractive personalities, rather than pencil-thin-girls with several severe health problems.
The Fear Of Size!
It is said that “Small is beautiful”. The modern concept is that “Slim is beautiful”. So many adolescent girls and young women, who dream of possessing pencil-thin figures, get into eating disorders.
The eating disorders are of two kinds, Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. Anorexia means a lack of desire to eat. Girls and women suffering from this disorder keep away from food by starving. They use diet pills and do excessive exercises to keep the body weight low.
The well known symptoms are keeping the body weight far less than the ideal weight; intense fear of putting on weight; irregular menstrual cycles and other disorders related to eating.
Anorexia puts a strain on the heart and lowers the heart rate. It throws the electrolyte balance and hormonal balance out of gear. It causes muscle weakness, osteoporosis and immune dysfunction and may lead to premature death.
People who suffer from Bulimia Nervosa find it difficult to fast or keep away from food. They have a ‘ravenous hunger’ as meant by the name of the disorder. They indulge in ‘binge eating’ and purge or vomit the food eaten–in an effort to keep thin.
The onset of Bulimia Nervosa is in the age range of 13 to 20 years. It is difficult to detect the disorder, as the person looks healthy and appears to eat well. But the repeated cycles of binging and purging have devastating effects on the body.
The strong gastric acids erode the teeth enamel and lacerate the lining of the mouth and throat. The person may suffer from dehydration and potassium depletion. The salivary glands get swollen.

Hello sarang ,I think it could be typing mishap ,as it could be CHINNAPAPA ,assumed to refer small ,little girl. I need your clarification.

Dear Doc

Your post # 243. I am glad you didn't prescribe -
"One Weighment, Thrice Daily, Before & After Meals" .

The sequence goes:
1 . Weighment , Breakfast, Weighment
2 . Weighment, Lunch , Weighment
3 . Weighment, Dinner, Weighment

[ Not to mention weighments before and after toilet visits ], all logged in in neatly tabulated charts,
to be attached as supplementary documents [ as back-ups] to horoscopes, to be given to
people on bride / groom hunting jaunts, after proper 'verification'.

Bound to cause insomnia. Then we can start all over again to look for pills to treat this insomnia.
A kind of pill that not help increase body weight, and not leave a 'heavy head' in the morning.

Raji Mam's handbag is getting full - already has dozens of inch-tapes and horoscopes, and now
these CHARTS ! Soon, she will have a pushcart full.

Not sure whether it will be insomnia for Raji Mam or the prospective Groom / Bride.

So, hold your prescription.

I was just going to type a sample diet to lose weight and also types of exercise to aid weight loss.

Ha Ha Ha..better not scare anyone yet with my prescription.

Most important fact every Indian origin woman should get into their head is..
"Stop wanting to look like a married woman!! That starts the 1st problem and leads to obesity"

I remember one of my husband's relatives telling me to "put on some weight so that people will know you are a married woman"

I was "why should I become fat just to prove to the world I am married"

See what I mean..we Indians should stop wanting to be fat after marriage!!LOL

No, I was referring to the name 'guruvayurappan' (without explanation) after chinnapapa; it certainly is not a thappupeyar!

Dear Doc

Your post # 248 purports :

1 . Thin woman - unmarried !
2 . Plump woman - somewhat married !
3 . Fat woman - married!
4 . Obese woman - much married!

[ Add to this a woman with fluctuating girth ] - often married !

God knows what advise you'll give Raji Mam on how to use
the inch-tape!
