An outsider's (Microsoft's Bill Gates) perspective

[h=1]India’s Progress[/h]From the beginning of his blog:
"India’s progress over the past 20 years has been quite phenomenal. It deserves recognition especially now, as rich countries consider whether to continue investing in global development assistance despite all the economic problems they face at home.India still faces many challenges. More than 400 million Indians live in extreme poverty. The country is home to half of all the world’s malnourished and underweight children and one fourth of the world’s tuberculosis."

A lady bus monitor, Karen Klein, 68 years old, was bullied by a group of school students in New York, and was driven to despair, making her cry.

The lady tried to ignore the verbal attacks by students on a bus operated by the Greece Central School District, near Rochester, N.Y. Children on the bus hurl repeated insults and threats at the grandmother, calling her fat and at one point suggesting that her children commit suicide. She was driven to tears. The bullying can be seen in this video:

Bullying

The video went viral on the internet, and within 24 hours, donations of more than $185,000 as on Thursday(21-June-2012) have since poured in for the grandmother. The lady did not report the bullying, but school officials notified police when they learned of it.

The outpouring of support for the lady from the public is amazing. Clearly people do not tolerate the myth that bullying is just a harmless rite of passage or an inevitable part of growing up for the children. Clearly, the parents have a role to play.

According to the agency which raised the funds for Klein, the lady "doesn't earn nearly enough" to deal with the children bullying her. Euphemism for her low class status. When you make enough money, you get the self confidence needed.

An amazing thing about your brain:

1.Sit in a chair, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2.Now, while doing this. draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand.Your foot will change direction, without your realizing it.

You won't believe me, Sir!

I was searching for this in my mail box yesterday, to post it here! :typing:

From my mail box ...

"SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE EXERCISE

The essence of the exercise is that your "Eyes Must be Closed" when you are doing this exercise.

You must practice the "Jin Ji Du Li" exercise with the eyes closed.

Here is the exercise:

Close your eyes and try standing on one foot.

If you are not able to stand for less than 10 seconds, it means that your body has degenerated to 60 to 70 years old level in other words, you may be only 40 years old, but your body has aged a lot faster.

I thought “oh, big deal, I’m sure I can do this easily”

I was fooling myself, I’m glad I tried it because I discovered much to my surprise that while I could stand easily on one foot with my eyes open, trying the same thing with my eyes closed was another story!

I just could not keep my balance for more than two to three seconds before I started wobbling and hopping around.

You do not need to lift your leg high, if you’re internal organs are out of synch, even lifting your leg this bit will make you wobble.

Now this was quite scary because it told me that my body was almost 60 years old and here was me, barely into my forties!

These Chinese are really very advanced in their knowledge of the human body.

It was very heartening to know that frequent and regular practice can help you recover your sense of balance." :thumb:

Just goes to show that you need to keep active physically, in addition to being active mentally.
By the way, how come there is no reaction to post #202 about a lady bus monitor being bullied by school children?
Emotional activation is also a necessary component in our well-being, don't you think?
Did you notice that she got $640,000 in public support (vide msk's post)?

1. Yes Sir!!

2. I did not comment because, even in this forum, posts teasing the fat people appear every now and then!

At least, others don't click 'like' for such posts! :nono:

3. Old ladies are not so lucky in India!! :tsk:

These forum members are presumably mature adults. If these people indulge in such teasing in public, it won't be a surprise if their children also turn out to be bullies.

People also bully slim people.

Just try being slim and go for a party attended by fat married woman..everyone will be asking you if there is no food at home.

They just can't bear the sight of a thin and slim person and will pass comments.

So the bullying goes both ways.

Dear Renu, not always! I have seen many mamis appreciated slender looking girls and ladies! :high5:

Many girls tend to put on weight even before getting married, now a days. The population seems to increase.

There is no need to tease them for their appearance. Their virtues should be taken into account!

But some make a fuss about everything - calorie consciousness, .........
I am reminded of an incident.

During a 'sadhdhi' lunch after a function in our native place, one mami told my nephew who was serving pAyasam,

'KaNNA, oru chottu vidu; pOrum!' for which his quick reply was, 'irungO mAmi, ink filler kondu varEn!'

Dear RR Ji,

Out here in Malaysia its Indian girls who are getting obese at a young age.
Other races out here are less obese and chinese are quite slim.
Indian girls at a very young age now itself develop menstrual problems, hair growth on face and also infertility after marriage all due to being over weight/obesity.

When I see a young patient who is overweight or obese I always guide them gently without hurting their feelings and tell them to loose weight even though they might be seeing me for some other ailment.

Healthy weight is very important for long term health.
So many Indian females here land up with diabetes at an early age.

We Indians are becoming complacent about body weight at the expense of health.
Body image is also very important.

Nowadays even in the west people are real obese and there is a trend of woman who say they are natural woman who do not want to look skinny or look like a movie star so they let themselves balloon out of proportion and finally just land up in the morbidity list of the medical statistics.

Obesity is a killer.

It's not only being overweight but most Indian woman have central fat distribution that is having tyres of fat in the midsection and a bulging abdomen.

That is the type of body that will be predisposed to metabolic syndrome..the triad of Hypertension,Diabetes and Ischemic Heart Disease.

Even among Indian female doctors here obesity is seen.

When doctors themselves do not look after their body weight what can we advise patients?

There is no harm being calorie conscious..that's the only way to remain in health weight.

Before I eat any meal..I mentally calculate the calories, glycemic index and see whether it's worth it to eat it.

If I have no choice but to consume a high calorie meal I make sure I work out extra on the thread mill.

That's why I do not like eating outside often or eating meals cooked by others cos I know the calorie requirement for myself and prepare accordingly.
