God is not a separate entity. Man is the image of God. Scriptures declare that God appears in human form (Daivam maanusha rupena). Though God has no separate form, Avatars descend from time to time to show how human lives can be divinised. I have often declared that God does not come down as Avatar to relieve individuals of their troubles and sorrow and to confer joy and happiness on them. Difficulties, troubles and worries come in the natural course as a consequence of your past actions. The Gita declares: Human beings are bound by merits and demerits (Karma) from previous lives (Karmaanubandheeni manushya loke). As is your action, so is the reaction. When you stand before a mirror and offer salutations, the salutation is reflected by the image. If you scowl at the mirror, the harshness is reflected back at you.

You may undertake any number of spiritual practices, but never forget God’s name even for a moment. Never do anything that will take you away from God. You can achieve anything through prayer. You need not pray loudly; it is enough if you pray mentally. God resides in your heart and listens to all your prayers. If you aspire to attain His grace, contemplate on Him incessantly. Worldly difficulties come and go. Do not attach much importance to them. Through prayer one can overcome any difficulty. Only God’s grace is true and everlasting, strive to attain it. Chant the name of God day in and day out. That alone will protect you at all times. Just as air is all pervasive, God is present in you, with you, around you, below you, above you. Hence be in constant communion with Him. When you develop faith in Divinity, you will naturally have unity. Consequently, there will be no scope for enmity.

Sa means Divine, ai or ayi means Mother and Baba means Father. The Name, Sai Baba means Divine Mother and Father. Sai’s descent is to achieve the supreme task of uniting the entire mankind as one family through the bond of brotherhood and to affirm and illumine the Divine (Aatmic) Reality within each and every being. The Divine takes the form as Avatar to reveal Himself as the basis for the entire Cosmos, and to instruct all to recognise the common divine heritage that binds everyone. Only when this happens can human beings work hard to rid themselves of animalistic qualities. I am the embodiment of Love; Love is My instrument. I reveal truth about Myself for, I desire that you should contemplate on this and derive joy. Also, may you be inspired to observe the disciplines laid down and progress towards the goal of Self-Realisation. Realise the Sai who shines in your hearts.

God is inscrutable. He cannot be realised in the outer objective world; He is in the very heart of every being. You extol God as omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent, but ignore His presence in you! Who can affirm that God is this or that? Who can confirm that God is not of this form or with this attribute? Each one can acquire from the vast expanse of the ocean only as much as can be contained in the vessel one carries to its shore. From that quantity, they can grasp but little of that immensity. Gemstones have to be sought deep underground; they do not float in mid-air. Seek God in the depths of yourself, not in the tantalising, kaleidoscopic Nature. The body is granted to you for this high purpose; but you are now misusing it, like the person who used the gem studded gold vase that came into his hands as an heirloom for cooking his daily food.

Consider that they have been given to you on trust, so that you may benefit others. They are all signs of His Grace, opportunities of service, and symbols of responsibility. Never seek to exult over others' faults; deal sympathetically with the errors and mistakes of others. Seek the good in others; hear only good tidings about them; do not give ear to scandal. On the occasion of Deepavali, resolve to light the lamp of Namasmarana and place it at your doorstep, the lips. Feed it with the oil of devotion; let steadiness be the wick. Let the lamp illumine every minute of your life. The splendour of the Name will drive away darkness from outside you as well as inside. You will spread joy and peace among all who come near you.

The festival of Deepavali is to express gratitude at the defeat of the Naraka (demonic) tendencies in man, which drags one down from Divinity. Naraka, whose death at the hands of Krishna is celebrated today, signifies hell. Narakaasura is the personification of all the traits of character that obstruct the upward impulses of man. The human being is a composite of man, beast and God, and in the inevitable struggle among the three for ascendency, you must ensure that God wins, suppressing the merely human and the lowly beast. The griha (home) where the Name of the Lord is not heard is a guha (cave), and nothing more. As you enter it, as you leave it and while you are in it, regularly perfume it, illumine it and purify it with the Name. Light it as a lamp at dusk and welcome it at dawn, as you welcome the Sun. That is the genuine Deepavali, the Festival of Lamps.

With the Lord’s name as the very breath of your life, engage in all life's activities, with no fear of fall. When the mind weds worldly activity (pravrithi), the progeny is bondage; when it weds spiritual renunciation (nivrithi), the progeny is freedom. Nivrithi confers fearlessness, and grants strength and courage, for it is desire that weakens man and makes one cringe. Detachment endows you with self-respect, and the capacity to stand up to slander and calumny. There are some who weep at the slightest sign of defeat or disappointment. This is despicable behaviour. When the Lord is installed in the altar of your heart why should you have fear or sorrow? Do you not know He is there, guarding you and guiding you? He is in all beings, always. Remember this fact wherever you are and whatever you may do. If only you do not give up the recitation of His Name you will succeed.

Every being passes through the stages of birth, youth, old age and death. Childhood is spent in playing, youth in family life and old age in discharging responsibilities. One way or the other, there is mental suffering associated with each of these stages. Our attitude to life is akin to that of a tamarind. The tamarind is made up of three parts – the seed, the skin and the fruit. Similarly a human being has the gross body, the subtle body and the causal body. Suppose a raw, young tamarind is hit with a stone, the outer layer as well as the inner layer will be hurt. On the other hand, when a ripe tamarind is hit with a stone, only the outer skin breaks and the juice is available for consumption. The one with worldly associations is similar to a raw tamarind. Gradually, give up all desires, as the nature of desires is to multiply.

He is with you, in you, above you, around you and below you. We have forgotten the easy way to reach God. All sufferings will vanish in no time if we sincerely call out to the Lord and sing His glory. The Lord’s Name is the only refuge to cross all the difficulties. There is nothing greater or mightier than His Name. The moment one chants His glory and sings His name, one attains bliss. Meditation and many rituals were followed in many ages, but in Kali age, chanting God’s Name (Namasmarana) is the only way to attain the Supreme.

Control your desires. Cultivate love for God. That love will confer on you everything you need. There is no need for you to ask anything from God. Did Rama not give to Shabari what she needed without her asking? Did He not bless Jatayu with His Grace? Dasharatha had prayed for so long that his son should perform the last rites for him. But he did not get it, while the bird Jatayu got the privilege of a few drops of water from Rama before its death and attained liberation. Rama even performed his last rites. Mother Shabari was eagerly waiting for Lord Rama’s arrival with sweet fruits for several years. Her intense devotion to the Lord fetched its reward – God confers His Grace (anugraha) according to each one’s deservedness and it cannot be secured by agraha (force or power).

The Himalayas or ‘Himachala’ forms the Northern boundary of India. ‘Hima’ means ice. It is white in colour and melts easily. Whiteness symbolizes purity. ‘Achala’ means that which is steady. Your heart should also be like the Himachala - pure, steady and which melts with compassion. God resides in each and every heart that is pure, steady and full of compassion. But today, many hearts have lost these noble qualities due to limitless desires. Life is a long journey and your desire is the luggage. The journey of your life will become enjoyable only when you reduce the luggage of desires. Less luggage, more comfort makes travel a pleasure! The Gita teaches that you should offer everything to God (Sarva Karma, Bhagavadh Preethyartham). You must perform every single action with the only goal to please God. This is the easiest and most effective way to be free from all difficulties and hardships.

In the cosmic context, Nature is the mirror, God is the viewer. All that is reflected in Nature is Divine. God alone exists everywhere. The object and the image appear because of the presence of the mirror. When there is no mirror, there is no image! God’s arithmetic is different from that of human beings. When a mirror is placed before you, you have three entities – you, the mirror and your image. When you take away one from three, according to normal arithmetic, there must be two entities, because ‘3 - 1 = 2’. However in the cosmic arithmetic, there is no ‘two’ because when the mirror is removed, only ‘you’ remain! This is the mystery relating to Nature and the wonders of the Lord. The glories of the Lord are multifarious and marvelous, beyond words.

The Vedas declare, “Mathru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava”. Revere the mother and father as Divine. All of you must realize that your blood, food, head and money are gifts of your parents. First and foremost, offer your gratitude to your mother. Never forget your mother who gave you birth after allowing you to grow within herself for nine months, and provides you all care and comfort, unmindful of her own discomforts. The mother always has the child’s well-being uppermost in her mind on all that she says and does. You may be highly educated and your mother may be illiterate, still you should have the utmost regard and respect for her. Consider the teachings of your mother as dear as scriptures themselves. Bereft of character, worldly education cannot grant peace or help you lead a Divine Life.

The body is made up of five elements and is not real at any time. Body is like a water bubble. The bubble is born in water, sustained in water and ultimately merges in the water. Similarly the Self is born from Divine Consciousness (Satchidananda) and merges ultimately in the Divine. Birth and death are scenes in this drama of life; do not consider them to be true. In your sleep you may have seen many mansions, but when you are awake, you don't see any of them! The buildings you see during your day are not visible to you when you are asleep. Hence both are untrue – day-dreams and night-dreams at best! The only fact in it is that 'you' are present in both times. Similarly though you have a human form, in reality you are Divine. Therefore sanctify this birth by leading a pure and sacred life. Don't accumulate the dirt of worldly life.

Today many parents, even those highly educated, are acting without any sense of discrimination – discouraging children from worshipping God and participating in bhajans. They tell them that they would have ample time to think of God, post retirement. This is a grave mistake. You can remember God in old age, only when you practice thinking of Him from early on. Childhood is a very sacred and golden phase in human life - do not misuse it! Gayatri Mantra is the embodiment of Mother Principle. Practice chanting it every day – in the morning, afternoon and evening. When your back is towards the Sun, your shadow will be in front of you. It will fall behind you only when you stand facing the Sun. Similarly illusion (maya), which is like your shadow, will overpower you when you turn your mind away from God. You can easily overcome illusion, when you turn your mind towards God.

Adi Shankara remarked to his disciples that young people were more keen on sensuous pleasures than enquire about the Soul (Atma). It is piteous that people are more attached to the body, which is a container of many filthy objects. They are carried away by the external physical attractions of the body, without understanding its impermanence. How long can youth last? His message is a strong warning to the young to be very careful in the life they lead and encourages them to shed body-consciousness. You must practice recognising the Divine Principle present in all beings, even though they may be called by different names and appear different. Youth must hold fast to God as their only true Friend and Supporter. Once you have firm faith, the Divine will Himself manifest and reveal Himself to you.

A man was performing a marriage in a village. Due to the insufficiency of cooking vessels, the person went to a rich man to borrow them for the occasion. The rich man generously loaned them and the vessels were used to cook a feast to serve the guests attending the wedding. After the function, can the dirty vessels be returned to the owner? No! The vessels must be cleaned inside and outside thoroughly and then be returned. This is true also for the vessel present within you, loaned by God - your heart! All of you are pilgrims in the journey of life. Just as you cannot misuse the borrowed vessel or return it unclean, your heart too must be maintained and returned pure and clean. Do not use the God-gifted heart and limbs to undertake unholy actions and get involved in unnecessary relationships, growing more in bondage. Lead a pure life.

Today the world is facing a lot of problems because people are not doing enough Namasamarana. Let each and every street reverberate with the singing of the divine glory. May each and every cell of your body be filled with the Divine Name. Nothing else can give you the bliss, courage and strength that you derive from Namasamarana. Even if others make fun of you, ignore it, let it go! Everyone young or old, rich or poor, must doNamasamarana. Do it with all your mind and total dedication. Sing to the Lord without any inhibitions; only then can you experience divine bliss. You do not need any musical instruments - it is enough if you call Him from the core of your heart. Take care that you do not have evil thoughts as they will produce discordant notes. Then you will receive divine grace and energy.

Always attend to your duties with a pleasant and smiling face. There is no use putting a ‘castor oil face’. Happiness is union with God. That is real Divinity. When you are confronted with difficult situations do not get upset and constantly worry thinking, “Oh My! How do I cross this situation?”. Such worry will only worsen the situation. Repose your faith in God. Think that difficulties are opportunities for your advancement. If you develop this attitude, your life will be sanctified. Whoever doesNamasmarana, whatever name they take and wherever they are, their life will be sanctified. They will be free from sin. Do not be too much concerned or bogged down withraga and tala (tune and rhythm). There is only one Raga, that is Hridayaraga (the tune of your own heart). That is ‘So… ham’ ('I am I'). Tune your life Unto Him. Then, whatever activity you undertake, it becomes a success.

So is yours!” (Mamaivamso jeevaloke jeevabhutah sanatanah). If you truly follow this principle, you will automatically achieve purity. Where there is purity, there is Divinity. Since time immemorial, each and every one of you are part of Me; you are My very own. Never forget this truth. If you develop faith in this truth, it will amount to reading all the scriptures. Every human being followsDharma (Righteousness). Where did this Dharma come from? It has come from feeling (bhava), which in turn emanated from faith(vishwas). Where faith is, there Dharma is! That faith is Truth.Dharma is verily the embodiment of Divinity. Truth is God; Faith is God; Love is God; Live in Love. Only when you cultivate Truth, Faith and Love, you can achieve anything.

Akhanda Bhajan involves constant contemplation on God in the morning, evening or even during the night time. No doubt, many people today are repeating the holy name; but not with love and steady faith. Some are concerned about how others are singing, whether their tune is in order, etc. This equates to doing namasankirtan with a wavering mind; no transformation will occur with such namasankirtan, despite doing it for hours together. It must be done with absolute concentration and steady faith to achieve transformation. To attain purity that pulverizes all negativity, it is not enough if chanting of the divine name is confined to a limited period. Hence global Akhanda Bhajan is held for 24 hours, every year. Consider yourself very fortunate to participate in an Akhanda Bhajan. If only you make good use of it, your life will be sanctified. Practice Namasmarana and make it a continuous spiritual exercise throughout your life.

While performing your duties in your house or outside, constantly remind yourself, “Whatever I do, think or speak, everything belongs to God.” The proper attitude should be, ‘Sarva karma Bhagavath preethyartham’. Take for example, the process of cooking. You add different ingredients to the dish being cooked in definite proportions and try to make them tasty. But the real taste comes only when the job of cooking is done as an offering to God. The food becomes divine when it is offered to God. On the other hand, if the various items are cooked with the attitude, ‘I am doing this job as a routine; I am cooking these items for my family members to partake’, it does not reach God. Hence undertake every act in your life as an offering to God, chanting His Name. Whatever you think, speak or do, consider it as God’s command, God’s work.

The person of a few words will be free from enmity. Through excessive talk, people fall prey to quarrels. Everyone must cultivate moderation in speech. Restraint in speech is conducive to friendly feelings. The one who is careful in behavior, doing all actions after due deliberation, will have no fear of danger. True education consists in knowing how to lead a peaceful life. To embark on or have a successful career, you must aspire for world peace. Desire and disappointments are the order of the day. Human life for most people seems to be full of fear. Various types of fears haunt wherever one is, whatever one does. How can one escape fear? Even the little objects of happiness which one seems to derive from life, is coupled with fear of losing them soon! Sin and merit, joy and sorrow, profit and loss, light and darkness are pairs of opposites that every being undergoes during their lives. Truly speaking, the absence of one (sorrow), indicates the presence of other (joy)! Saint Adi Shankara further clarified, “Where there is no attachment, there will be no fear!” How can one attain that state? By attaining proximity with the Divine! He further exhorted, “Banish fear by cultivating detachment (Vairagya) and journeying towards the Self. It is through Self-Realization that you can understand the true nature of fear and overcome it.

Since some years, the Mahila Vibhag Committee of Calcutta has been conducting Rama Nam Kirtans and Ramayana Readings in the Women Prisoners Section of the Presidency Jail, Calcutta. The attendance at these sessions is very good. The inmates also participate in the bhajans and kirtans. They look forward to the day and hour when the volunteers come every week and their faces are bright and happy, when they go through the experience of moral upliftment and spiritual ecstasy.
At a meeting of the Jail Code Revision Committee, an officer asked me whether the prisoners would actually be benefited by the weekly programmes of bhajans, conducted by us in the Women's section of the Jail. I replied firmly, "Yes,” for, I remembered what had transformed a prisoner, named Nitya. Her story revealed to me, more clearly than that of many others, how in times of unbearable mental distress, the human mind seeks spiritual support and sustenance.
I came to know Nitya during one of the Ramayana Programmes in the Presidency Jail. The Ram Nam Kirtan had commenced. The prisoners sat facing the garlanded picture of Rama; the room was vibrant with devotion and inner joy. Suddenly, a piercing cry awakened us into hard reality. A young woman rushed in and flung herself full length before the picture. She started striking her forehead hard on the floor; her sobs and groans rent our heart. All eyes in the room were shedding tears in silent sympathy. The kirtan stopped. I found myself bending to take her in my arms and lay her on my lap. She looked up with a wild stare and quickly buried her face on my shoulders, as her entire body shook with long shuddering gasps of sorrow. I patted her softly and crooned gently in her ear; time passed; no one spoke or stirred. At last, she sat on the floor beside me.
"Would you like to join the Kirtan?" I asked, placing a copy of the Book of Songs in her hands. Her swollen, tear stained face gazed at me with unseeing eyes. I led her to the Picture and she sat stiff before it. The Kirtan was resumed. Every time the line ended with the word, Rama, I noticed that she was moving her lips and attempting to frame that Name.
The programme over, I asked the Matron, "What had happened to her?" She had just received a life sentence. “What has she done?" I enquired. "Murder, she poisoned her husband.”
That was Nitya, who was only about 22 years of age. Thereafter she attended the Bhajan sessions regularly; it was she who arranged the flowers, lit the oil lamps, set the incense sticks aglow, and when the sessions were over, gave every one her share of the sweets offered to Rama.
A few months later, I learnt that she had volunteered to work in the sick room, helping to nurse her sisters and their children. The doctor spoke of her with thankful appreciation. Her gentle and painstaking habits, behaviour pleased the Matron, and relieved her from humdrum chores. She learnt also from Instructresses in the jail to sew and embroider beautiful designs. In a few years, she became indispensable as a helper; during my visits I found her invariably by my side.
Then, one day, I did not find her. I learnt that she had earned enough remissions to be released much earlier than any one had anticipated.
I tremble to think what would have happened to her, if that little shrine, that garlanded picture, those sweet enchanting prayer songs had not taken charge of her broken heart, and washed the crime off her hands and heart.
