Lord Krishna incarnated to destroy evil in a handful of individuals. But now, the evil qualities are not identifiable in a small group of people. They are widespread everywhere. The scorpion has poison only in its tail; the cobra only in its fangs; but people have poison all over them! They have it in their eyes, their tongues, their mind, their intelligence, their gait, their brain – just about everywhere. You may ask, “Oh! When will this poison be counteracted and destroyed?” When the Lord enters your heart, that is the very objective He will accomplish. Offer unto the Lord, the ‘flower of your heart’ (Hrudaya Pushpam),after cleansing it thoroughly of the dust and pests (desire, anger, envy, doubt, etc.) that infest it. Without effort, can there be victory in any field? Can you become a high ranking official without the appropriate qualifications of scholarship, talent, experience and wisdom? So persevere and succeed!

In the young-of-the-monkey type of devotion, the child must rely on its own strength to protect itself —wherever the mother jumps, the child must attach itself to its mother's belly and hold on, even if pulled apart! So too, the devotee must stand the tests of the Lord and hold on to His name under all conditions, tirelessly, without the slightest trace of dislike or disgust, bearing the criticism and ridicule of the world and conquering the feelings of shame and defeat. An exemplary example of this type of devotion is Prahlada. In the second path, just as the kitten simply places all its burdens on the mother cat, so too, the devotee completely trusts the Lord and surrenders to Him. The mother cat holds the kitten in its mouth and transports it safely through even very narrow passages. Lakshmana is the example of this path. These two are sometimes referred to as devotion with effort (bhakthi) and self-surrender (prapatti). The former a hard path, while the latter a simple or safe path.

Deho Devalaya - The body is the temple of the Lord. You are going about your daily journey with a temple where God is present in your innermost shrine. The body is not a mass of flesh and bone. It is a medium for sacred vibrations (mantras) which save you when they are meditated upon. The body is a sacred instrument earned after long ages of struggle. It is equipped with reason and emotion, and is capable of being used for deliverance from grief and evil. Honour it as such; keep it in good condition so that it might serve that high purpose. Maintain it even more carefully than the brick and mortar houses you live in, and always preserve the conviction that it is a divine instrument and nothing more. Use it for that pure purpose for which it has been designed and gifted to you.

If a person is ill or if his mind is immersed in something else, the taste of food cannot be grasped. So also, if the heart is full of ignorance (tamas) or is wayward, no joy can be experienced even if one is engaged in remembrance of the Lord, devotional singing, recitation of the name, or meditation. The tongue will be sweet as long as there is sugar on it. Likewise, if the pillar of light called devotion continues to burn in the corridor of the heart, there will be no darkness. A bitter thing on the tongue makes the whole tongue bitter. Similarly when greed and anger enter the heart, the brightness disappears, darkness dominates the scene, and one becomes the target of countless griefs and losses. Therefore, those who aspire to attain the holy presence of the Lord must acquire certain habits, disciplines, and qualities. The usual ways of life won’t lead to God. They have to be somewhat modified by means of spiritual discipline.

Just as the body is the house you live in, the world is the body of God. An ant biting the little finger of your foot is able to draw your attention to the spot, and you react to the pain, making an effort to remove the tiny enemy. You must similarly feel the pain, misery, or joy or elation, wherever it is evinced in the entire land; you must make an effort to protect the land from the enemy, however remote may be the place where the enemy has presented himself. Be kind with all your kin. Expand your sympathies, serve others who stand in need to the extent of your skill and resources. Do not fritter away your talents in profitless channels. Respect for the parents, who started you in life and brought you into this world which has enabled you to gather such a vast and varied treasure of experience, is the first lesson that Dharma teaches. Gratitude is the spring which feeds that respect.

Look at the crane; it walks about pretty fast in water. But while walking, it cannot catch fish. When it wants to catch fish, the very same crane becomes quiet and stands motionless. So also, if you proceed with greed, anger, and similar negative qualities, you can never secure the fish of truth (sathya), righteousness (dharma), and peace (shanti). With any spiritual practice you observe, please add the practice of uninterrupted remembrance of the Lord's precious name (namasmarana). Only then can you master the natural attributes of greed, anger, etc. All the scriptures (sastras) teach but this one key lesson! Since the Lord is the universal goal and this journey of life has Him as the destination for each and every one of you, keep Him constantly in your view and subdue the mind, which makes you wander from the path.

Those, who are trying to build the human community on a foundation of wealth (dhana), are building on sand; those who seek to build it on the rock of righteousness (dharma) are the wise. Every person consumes specific quantities of food and many even calculate the calories consumed and burnt. Just think for a moment: Have you ever calculated what you have given back to the society that helps you live and enjoy in the world? You must transform the food into service, either to serve your best interests or for the well-being of the society. Mere feeding and care of the body is profitless, for the body is just a container. When the spark of Divinity leaves the body, it becomes a corpse. No one will even keep the corpse for more than a few hours. People will avoid the sight and smell of a dead body; it is disgusting. Never be your own enemy nor be a burden on anyone.

In our country, there is a peculiar method of trapping monkeys. This process consists of bringing a big pot with a small mouth and putting some material which is attractive to the monkey inside that pot. A monkey, out of curiosity would put its hand inside the pot and get a handful of that material. It will be trapped, unable to pull its hand out! The monkey imagines that someone inside the pot is holding its hand. Then it will attempt to run away along with the pot! No one is holding the monkey. The monkey trapped itself, due to its own attachment. The moment it lets the material go, it will be free. Similarly in this big pot of the world with narrow mouth of temporal pleasures, people are tempted! When they are lost with involvement in those pleasures, they think that someone or something is binding them down. No one is responsible for this bondage. The moment you give up the pleasures and detach yourself, you will be free!

This human birth is the consequence of countless good deeds, and it should not be cast aside; the chance must be fully exploited. As the Kenopanishad says, “This present precious life should not be thrown away (Na Chath Iha Avedheen Mahathee Vinashtih)". When there are many chances of saving oneself, isn’t it a big loss if no thought is spent on ways of escape? The Kathopanishad exhorts, "Arise, awake! (Uttishthata! Jagratha!)." Those who are agitated by doubts about what to accept and what to reject, those who are blinded by illusion, and those who cannot distinguish between darkness and light, death and immortality —all these should approach great people who can show the path to understand the eternal truth, the self-illumined basis of all creation. Then both this world and heaven will be merged in the same effulgence! For the sake of this realisation, you should have deep yearning and hard, disciplined practice.

Embodiments of love! Where the six qualities of zeal, determination, courage, intelligence, ability and heroism are present, there Divine help will manifest. In any field, at any time, success is assured to the person endowed with all these six precious qualities. They help you confront various difficulties from time to time and contribute to your all-round well-being. Just as a student must pass various tests and examinations, these qualities are also subject to trials. Such trials are your stepping stones to high achievements. These trials come in the form of losses, troubles, pains, sufferings and calumny. Unfortunately, many students and elderly alike, lack self-confidence and have become a prey to peacelessness because of their involvement in sensual pleasures. Youth, students and everyone must develop self-confidence. In fact, self-confidence should be the life-breath of every person. Develop self-confidence and embark on the journey of life with faith in God.

Discarding the path and wasting one’s life is an insult to the very name of the species! Instead of getting enslaved to the evanescent and the false, and wasting precious time in their pursuit, dedicate every minute to discovering truth and contemplating on the everlasting, ever-true Lord. Such dedication is the real function of the soul. On the other hand, spending time in illusory appetites is the drag of the world. One shouldn’t fall victim to the poisonous attractions of worldly luxuries or the wiles of seductive beauty. One day, all these fascinating scenes will vanish as a story unfolded in dream! The characteristic of a spiritual aspirant is the attainment of truth, not the search of the unreal in this evanescent world. In this false world, there can be no true living (sathya-achara). There can be only false living (mithya-achara). True living consists in the realisation of the Lord. This must be borne in mind by everyone every moment of their life.

The spiritual aspirant should note the distinction between the conduct of the ordinary (sahaja) person and the spiritual aspirant. Rice in its natural state and boiled rice —can these two be the same? The hardness of natural rice is absent in the boiled one. The boiled grain is soft, harmless, and sweet. The unboiled grain is hard, conceited, and full of delusion. Similarly both types of individuals are souls (jivis) and humans, no doubt, but those immersed in external or multiplicity based illusions (avidya-maya)are ‘people’, while those immersed in internal or knowledge based illusions (vidya-maya) are ‘spiritual aspirants’. Though the Lord is situated in every heart, spiritual practice is necessary so that they may discover it for themselves, right? It isn’t possible for us to see our own face! We need a mirror! So too, a basic path, a spiritual practice, is necessary.

May Baba grant us the intelligence to understand the Divine Power
May His power grant us the wisdom to sincerely attempt to dwell in HIM
May His Divine energy grant us mind to think of him always
May His Darshan bring us the path of Mukthi

Sai Ram

You come to Puttaparthi to strengthen your relationship with the Divine. Hold on to it firmly. Put into practice at least one thing you learn from here. It is not enough to chant the names of God. God must be installed in the heart. Make your conscience your guide and preceptor. That will promote true devotion. All external paraphernalia will not help you. There are four mottos which all devotees should follow: (1) Avoid bad company (2) Welcome association with good persons (3) Remember always the transient and the permanent, and (4) Ceaselessly engage yourself in meritorious acts. It is through the above that you become good. Remember, the essence of all scriptures is: ‘Help ever; hurt never.’ If the above basic rules are followed, all countries will be happy and peaceful. Like India, every country is a part of the mansion of planet earth. When we have this broad vision, humanity will be one in spirit.

There was a woman devotee, who was a worshipper of Krishna. Every morning she used to clean the Krishna shrine in her house with cowdung and throw the remnants of the cowdung outside, saying: "Krishnarpanam Asthu" ("Let this be an offering to Krishna.") The priest of the local Krishna temple noticed that every morning, after he had washed and decorated the idol of Krishna with garlands, when he was offering Arati to the deity, a small lump of cowdung used to fall on the face of the idol. He was deeply distressed over this strange phenomenon and told the village elders about it. They also witnessed the phenomenon in the temple and sent a vigilance squad to find out who was throwing cowdung at that time. In one street a scout found a woman throwing cowdung outside her house, uttering the words, "Krishnarpanam." It was found that at the same time she was throwing the cowdung, the apparent desecration of the idol by cowdung was taking place in the temple. The Lord is not concerned as to what is offered to Him. He accepts whatever is offered with a pure heart. In His eyes there is nothing good or bad in itself. When the woman devotee offered the cowdung as "Krishnarpanam" (offering to Krishna), it reached the Krishna idol. The village elders went to the lady and reproached her for her unbecoming conduct in offering cowdung to Krishna. They did not consider how the cowdung thrown outside her house reached the idol in the temple. They thought only of the cowdung as such and did not reckon with the power and intensity of the devotion behind the devotee's action.
The elders summoned the husband and other relations of the old woman to hold an enquiry. The woman pleaded before them: "I am incapable of hurling cowdung on the face of my Krishna. I am ready to lay down my life for Krishna. How can I do any action of desecration? I do everything as an offering to Krishna." The elders told her not to throw the cowdung and not to utter the words, "Krishnarpanam Asthu." At the instance of her husband and other relations, she agreed to this course.
But from that day onwards, the temple doors in the Krishna temple would not open however much the priest and others tried to open them. The village elders realised that they had done a grievous wrong to a great devotee and pleaded for pardon from her. That moment the temple doors opened.
The ways of devotees can be understood only by devotees. Others cannot understand them. Phenomena such as these are happening all the time all over Bharat. It is because of such devotion that Bharat has remained a holy land through the ages.

In this world, there is no penance higher than fortitude, no happiness greater than contentment, no good deed holier than mercy, and no weapon more effective than patience. Devotees should consider the body as the field and good deeds as seeds. Then with the help of the heart as the farmer, cultivate the name of the Lord to reap the harvest - the Lord Himself. Like cream in milk and fire in fuel, the Lord is in everything. Have full faith in this. As is the milk, so is the cream; so also, as is the spiritual discipline, so is the direct experience (sakshatkara) of the Lord! As a consequence of taking up the Lord’s name, four distinct fruits will be experienced by sincere seekers. They are: company of the noble, truth, contentment and control of the senses. Through whichever of these gates one enters, whether one is a householder, recluse, or a member of any other class, one can reach the Lord without fail. This is certain.

I want you to exercise control over five vital things in life. (1) ‘Do not waste money.’ Realize that misuse of money is evil. If you wish to keep a photo of Bhagawan, have only one. Why waste your money on buying too many? (2) ‘Do not waste food.’ Realize that ‘Food is God.’ (3) ‘Do not waste Time.’ Time is God. Time wasted is life wasted. (4) ‘Do not waste energy.’ Understand that when you see, speak, hear, act or think energy is expended. In all these activities do not waste your energies unnecessarily. (5) ‘Do not forget God’, at any moment whatever you may be doing. God is present wherever you may go. He is with you, beside you and around you always. Hence there is no need for you to go to some temple to pray to God. Your heart is your temple. Turn your vision inward and understand the Atmic Principle.

Each one of us has some sort of desire in one's life. Our life becomes cherish-able only such things are attained
without any difficulty. Similarly someone desires to have a relationship with somebody and trys to make a sincere
effort through friends and relative, etc. Like that, one should aspire to have a mental relationship with the Supreme
Power too. For definitely good reasons, one should search for a true path through a Guru, who will only be able
guide to this route. To be precise, everyone learns in life through different acts, as to how to one should learn
things carefully. For e.g., Mental Discipline is primarily essential, secondly one should be able to discriminate as
to what is good or bad, thirdly one should have incessant dedication in the practice of search of the route to
the Supreme Power, while having a determination to attain that goal with devotion. If this is practiced regularly
one should be able to touch the feet of the Supreme Power without any difficulty.

One may be happy materially, but may lack in certain things emotionally and also spiritually. One must have
good virtues and regard human values and also to have association of a Satsang for positive encouragement
so as to fine-tune the mental capacity to think of the Supreme Power without any detraction rather in a
disciplined method. One should be able to develop a habit or feeling to listen to the inner voice that would
make the right decisions with a true spirit. For this mainly dedicated approach is essential at all times.
Once this is done one would be able to process mental thoughts for a proper application over a period of
time. Sometimes one may have to sit alone and evaluate completely the method of approach too with
out any emotional throught processes.

People crave worldly happiness; this craving itself is the disease, and sufferings are but the drugs we take. In the midst of these, one rarely entertains the desire to attain the Lord. However, it is necessary to analyse and discriminate, for the spirit of renunciation is born out of such analysis. Without enquiry, detachment cannot be obtained. Miserliness is like the behavior of a dog; it must be transformed. Anger is the first enemy of a spiritual aspirant. Untruth is even worse - it destroys all the vital powers. Theft ruins life; it makes the priceless human life cheaper than rotten food. Moderate food, moderate sleep, selfless love, and fortitude will help in the upkeep of the health of both your body and the mind. Whoever you are, in whatever condition you may be, do not give room for dispiritedness! Be fearless and remember the Lord with unshaken faith and without any ulterior motive, all suffering and sorrow will fall away.

Avoid unnecessary and excessive association with all and sundry. People visit Puttaparthi from America, Japan, Germany, Russia, and so on leaving their parents and kith and kin. Why then should you cultivate new relationships? Keep your association with anyone to the barest minimum. Keep your mind pure. There is no need to indulge in chatter. Talk less, think or work more. Cultivate this habit. Unnecessary association with strangers may have undesirable consequences. To join bad company and come to grief is a self-wrought calamity. Genuine spiritual aspirants should be particularly careful in eschewing bad company. They should create an environment conducive to their spiritual progress and mental peace. That is the only thing Swami wants. Do not waste time. Do not give room for useless thoughts.

You may ask: "How am I to declare, Aham Brahmasmi (I am Divine)?” Yes, you can do so. But, first understand the Aham, the ‘I’, the Divine Principle. Scriptures declare - Ekam Eva adhvitheyam Brahma - The Absolute is One without a second. Though people worship the Absolute with different names and forms, the Supreme Reality is only one. Just as the same person is called in different names by different people at different times, God has many names and forms - all these are creations of the human mind. Scriptures emphatically declare that the Lord is the nameless and attributeless Eternal Reality. Understand properly the true and Divine nature of the Aham ('I'). The ‘I’ is the master of your body, senses and the intellect, and is the power that permeates the entire cosmos.

Everyone is liable to make mistakes without being aware of it. However bright a fire may be, there will be smoke emanating from it. So also, whatever good a person might do, there will be a minute trace of evil. Make every effort to ensure that the bad or evil is minimised, and good is maximised. You may not succeed in the first attempt. Carefully think over the consequences of whatever you do or talk. In whatever way you want others to honour you, love you, or behave with you, in the same way you should first behave with others, and love and honour them. Then they will reciprocate. Instead, without you honouring or loving others, if you complain that they are not treating you properly, it is surely a wrong conclusion. Those who advise others about true and good conduct must follow the advice themselves. Then there is no need for advice, others would simply learn the lesson by example.

It is not the nature of a spiritual aspirant to search for faults in others and hide their own. If your faults are pointed out to you by someone, don’t argue and try to prove yourself right, and don’t bear a grudge against them for it. Reason out within yourself how it is a fault and set right your own behaviour. Rationalising it for your own satisfaction or wreaking vengeance on the person who pointed it out —these are not the traits of a spiritual aspirant or devotee. Depression, doubt, conceit —these will harm one’s practices and are akin to Rahu and Kethu (planets which bring ill-luck). When your devotion is well established, these qualities will be easily discarded. Seek always the truthful and the joyful, and avoid all thoughts which are untrue, sad and depressing. Always be cheerful, smiling, and enthusiastic under all circumstances. This pure attitude is most desirable. Never get inflated when praised or deflated when blamed - be a spiritual lion!

The doctor first diagnoses the disease and then prescribes the course of treatment. So too, you must submit yourself to the diagnosis of your illness, viz. misery, travail, and pain through Self-Enquiry. Investigate fearlessly and with care, and you will find that your nature is bliss(ananda)! You have falsely identified yourself with the temporary, the frivolous and the paltry, and that attachment brings sorrow. Realise that both joy and sorrow are passing phases, like clouds across the blue sky. Learn to treat prosperity and adversity with equanimity. Just as fish lives only when it is immersed in water, so too human being lives only when immersed in bliss. You must have bliss at home, in society, and in the world, but more than all, in your heart. Your heart is the spring of joy. That spring must be touched by constant recitation of Lord’s Name and dwelling on His Glory. Never give way to doubt or despair.

People driving cars concentrate on the road, for they are anxious to save themselves and others from accidents. Fear is what induces single-mindedness here. But Love is a greater force for achieving concentration. If you have steady and resolute love, concentration becomes intense and unshakeable. Faith develops into love, and love results in concentration. And under these conditions, prayer begins to yield fruit. Pray keeping all the waves of the mind stilled. Pray, as the performance of a duty for your very real existence, as the only justification for your coming into the world as a human. Narayana is the Lord of the Water (naaram means water). But what is the water of which He is the Lord of? He resides in the heart, and His presence when recognised melts even the stoniest heart, and water emanates from the eye as tears of joy, gratitude, and fullness! The function of your tears is not to weep like a fool or a coward but to express internal joy.
