Everything is suffused with love (Prema). So we can unhesitatingly declare that the Supreme Lord is the form of love (prema-swarupa).In all living things, love manifests itself in various forms and is known through many names such as love for offspring, affection, devotion to God, desire (vaatsalya, anuraaga, bhakthi, ishtam) etc., based on the direction in which it is channelised. But whatever the form, the essence is the same. On the basis of this knowledge and experience, it is clear that the supreme Lord is the inner Atma of all created things (Sarva-butha-antar-atma). That which teaches the highest knowledge of this unity is known as nondualism (a-dvaitha);that which teaches the principle of the lover and the Loved is known as dualism (dvaita); that which teaches about all three, love, lover, and loved — or nature (prakriti), individual (jiva), and Brahman— is known as qualified nondualism (visishta-advaita). But these three are one.

To my dearest uncle Ajit Kumar Hastir..you would never be forgotten.

You breathed your last on May 26 2015..a day I will always remember..It was actually even hard to believe that you were no more for you looked so lovely and radiant..even more radiant when you were alive...its strange that death brought such a glow to your face..may be you are in a better off place hence the glow..I dont know where you have gone now..whether Vaikuntha or Kailasha..but I know for sure you are in peace.

Well the saying goes...Punarapi Jananam Punarapi Maranam..so somehow all of us would meet again in some life or the other.

Adios mAma..Love you lots.

The Gayatri mantra is the royal road to Divinity. There is no fixed time or regulation for reciting it. Nevertheless, the young celibates (Brahmacharis)would do well to recite it during the morning and evening Sandhya (twilight hours) to derive the greatest benefit. However because the Divine is beyond time and space, anytime and anyplace is appropriate for repeating God's name. The Bhagavata declares:"Sarvadaa, sarvatra, sarva kaleshu Hari chintanam - Contemplate on God always, at all places and at all times." You must learn to think of God in whatever you see, whatever you do and whatever you touch. You must realise that you are playing temporary roles on the cosmic stage. You must get back to your true Divine Selves when the play is over. By regularly reciting theGayatri, you must purify your lives and be an example to the world in righteous living.

Vikshepa is an affliction of the mind that consists of worldly distractions; various spiritual exercises (sadhanas) are undertaken to overcome it and realise the Divine. The sadhanas include meditation, concentration and performance of good deeds for achieving purity of mind. When one succeeds in overcoming Vikshepa, one is confronted with avarana (akin to a thick covering in which one is enveloped). This covering is known as maya (delusion). It envelops everything in the universe. The eyes with which one can see everything that is outside cannot see themselves. Likewise, Maya, which reveals the entire universe, cannot reveal the Divine. Because we are enveloped in Maya, we seek worldly pleasures and do not seek our own Divine essence. ‘Yaddhrushyam than-nashyathi - Whatever is perceptible, is perishable.’ In the pursuit of fleeting and impermanent pleasures, we are throwing away the permanent, the unchanging and the real elements in human life.

You pray to God for trivial worldly things. Distinguish clearly between earthly happiness and divine bliss. Ask for selfless love, which you do not have, but He has in plenty. Pray for love, peace and bliss. God is the embodiment of bliss; His love is supreme without a parallel. He knows what is good for you and will give it. He is a witness to all your thoughts, words and actions. Therefore surrender wholeheartedly unto Him, and lead an ideal life. You are all embodiments of the Divine. So love all and never hurt anyone. If you harm anyone, you are harming the Divine. Love is as vital for a human as fire is vital for a lump of coal to sparkle. Get rid of all your weaknesses by concentrating on Divine Love, as grace is ever flowing and confers the greatest strength. God is the Cosmic Director and all humans are mere actors. So perform your role to please Him!

The human body is a cover, a receptacle for the Atma. Elements like water and wind are intimately bound up with the body. Therefore, the Atma Principle, which is the core, is not cognised. People have lost awareness of this Principle, which is Truth. The Atma is in the body, but not of it. The Atma Principle, though active in the body, does not belong to the body. The ability of the eyes to see and the ears to hear are given by the Atma. The eyes and ears are sustained by the Omni-Consciousness, the Divine Principle. Your Soul (Divine Self) is the real ‘You’, the Will (Sankalpa). The elements (ether, wind, fire, water, and earth) that constitute the cosmos operate only as prompted by the supreme wisdom, which energizes them. The entire world of living beings - both fixed and moving are sustained by supreme wisdom. That supreme wisdom is Atma, the Brahman and the visible, objective world.

Students of today are blind to the goal of life. Some students do not even feel the pain of not knowing the purpose of life. Only one in a million or a crore strives to realise the essence of life. This striving is the stepping stone for the realisation of the purpose of life. Many people feel that the acquisition of food, clothing, shelter, wealth, conveniences, and comforts constitute the very purpose of life. Life remains a tragedy as long as one labours under this kind of delusion. The day one realises the purpose of life, one undergoes a total transformation, from vedana (agony) to nirvedana (freedom from pain). When one becomes conscious of light, acquires wisdom and realises the meaning of existence, one is transported from agony to ecstasy. Every bit of learning should be based on the foundation of ethical, righteous and spiritual principles. Education that is not founded on these will flounder to the ground and become useless.

From the point of view of what one achieves at the end of the journey, there is no difference between a liberated soul(jivanmukta) and a devotee; both are beyond ego (ahamkara),nature (prakriti) with its three attributes or gunas, and the rules and regulations (Dharma) that govern the caste-stage of life(varna-ashrama). The hearts of such will be full of compassion and be filled with the urge to do good to the world. Their divine bliss born of oneness impels them to act in this way. They will have no desires, for desires are the products of feelings of ‘I’ and ‘mine’. Only after these desires are uprooted do people become true devotees, right? So there can be no room in them for desires. They are truly speaking devotees of the embodiments of immortality (amrita-swarupa). For those with that immortal nature, there can be no appetite except for the sweetness of spiritual bliss (ananda).

Yama (Lord of Death) is as omnipresent as Siva! Yama is associated with the body (deha); He cannot affect the individual soul (jiva). The body is the essential vehicle for the individual soul to understand its real nature. Still, who knows when it may become the target for the attention of Yama, the master of the body? Who knows when this body will get entrapped in the coils of Yama’s ropes? The individual soul, burdened with this easily destructible body, must pay attention to this fact and be all-eager to merge in Siva! People usually procrastinate tasks - yesterday’s tasks are delayed to today and today’s tasks to tomorrow. But the tasks of spiritual discipline are not of such a nature. The minute that just elapsed is beyond your grasp; so too, the approaching minute is not yours! Only that individual soul which has this understanding engraved in its heart can merge in Siva.

They are, according to the Veda, four stages - the waking, dream, deep sleep, and the liberated stage (turiya). In the first stage, one is awake to the objective world and is oriented outward. Since one identifies with the gross body complex at this stage, the experiences are also gross. In the dream the self is in-faced. Reactions, responses, and experiences are all self-contained. They do not belong to the area outside of oneself. Next comes deep sleep (sushupti). This stage is free from even dreams. There is no feeling of either separation or identity, the particular or the universal, experiencer or experience. There is only the Atma, in which one has temporarily merged. In the fourth step (Turiya), the individual is no more so. It has attained the basic truth of life and of creation. Those who have reached this step no longer have concern with the individual self. These are four states one experiences, but they are also stages one has to go through in search of Self-Knowledge.

The minute hand of the clock is the individual soul. It goes round and round - the hour hand does move, silently and slowly, with dignity. The hour hand is the Supreme Soul. Once in an hour, these two meet, but the individual soul does not get that consummation fixed forever. It loses the precious chance, and so has to go round and round again. Liberation happens when the two merges and there is just one. Like the silkworm that spins from out of itself the cocoon that proves to be its tomb, people spin from out of their own mind, the cage in which they get trapped. Assign your mind the task of serving the Lord and it will grow tame. Give your mind to the Lord. Forget the past and don’t worry about errors in future. Bring to memory only those things that are worth remembering and assiduously follow your spiritual practices. You will achieve spiritual progress.

What is the use in planning a well when the house is on fire? Where is the time to dig now? When will water become available? When is the fire to be extinguished? It is an impossible task! If, at the very start, a well was ready, how helpful it would be on such critical occasions! Beginning to contemplate on God during the last moments is like beginning to dig the well when the house is on fire. Therefore equip yourself right now, by contemplating on God off and on, so that it will stand you in good stead when the end approaches. Start today the spiritual discipline that has to be done tomorrow! Start now what has to be done today! One doesn’t know what is in store the next moment; therefore there should be no delay in engaging in spiritual practices. For this physical stamina is also necessary, so the body has to be tended to, though over-tending causes damage. To the degree that is essential, the body should be looked after with great care.

Inclinations (vasanas) won’t disappear as long as one’s heart is full of the illusion of egotism, even if one is immersed in many heart-purifying spiritual disciplines. Such people, if they want to get rid of the feeling of ‘I’ and ‘mine’, must worship the Lord. One whose heart is ruled by the group of six passions can have only ego as counselor! Those who have such a counselor are worse than foolish, however great they claim to be as pundits, aspirants, or renunciants. People experience joy and misery through the ear. Therefore avoiding the cruel arrows of hard words, one should use sweet, pleasant and soft ones — and with that softness, add the sweetness of truth. Making the word soft by adding falsehood only clears the way for more misery. A person who has become a spiritual aspirant should use very soft, sweet, true, and pleasant words. Such a person can be recognised by their good qualities.

The Master comes to save not one good person from illusion, but the whole of mankind. He assumes a Form that people can love, appreciate and revere. He gives joy and courage by speaking your language. The only blemish that comes in between your mind and the Master is illusion. Illusion is like a fierce dog that will not allow anyone to approach the Master. You can manage to bypass it by calling out to the Master loudly so that He Himself comes down and accompanies you to His home. That is to say, you must win the Lord’s Grace to attain His proximity (Saameepyam). Illusion is the Lord’s pet, so it will not harm you if the Lord orders it to desist from harming you. So just as you give the goldsmith a broken or a dented ornament and receive a fine jewel back, entrust your mind to the Lord. It certainly needs repair, if not complete reconstruction.

By carrying a bundle of sandalwood, can a donkey become an elephant? The donkey will sense the difference in weight but not the scent! On the other hand, the elephant disregards the weight and inhales the sweet scent. So too, the spiritual aspirant, or devotee will take in only the pure truth, the pure essence of good activities, of godliness and scriptures. On the other hand, one who goes on arguing for the sake of mere scholarship, learning, and disputation will know only the weight of logic, missing the scent of truth! Love (prema) is the most effective instrument for constantly remembering the Lord. Keeping that instrument safe and strong needs the power of discrimination (Viveka). Many in the world utilize their vast learning in disputation to prove their superiority; this is a great mistake. If they really were so learned, they would silently experience the core, the pure Divine.

You must proceed ever towards strength (balam); you must not take to untruth, wickedness, crookedness - all of which denote a fundamental fatal trait of cowardice and weakness (Balaheenam). Weakness is born of accepting as true a lower image of yourself than you truly are. You believe you are the husk, but you really are the kernel. This is a key fact. All your spiritual practices must be directed to the removal of the husk and the revelation of the kernel. So long as you say, “I am”, there is bound to be fear, but once you say and feel, “Aham Brahmasmi” (I am Divine), you get infinite strength. The influence of the Divine is so subtle and strong that while you are contemplating on Him, all traces of envy and greed will disappear from your mind. The pure love the cowherds (Gopis) had for Lord Krishna is a great example. This is the characteristic of Divine Incarnations at all times.

Humans are full of love. Their hearts are springs of mercy. They are endowed with true speech. Peace is the characteristic of the human mind; it is its innate quality. There is no need to go anywhere else in search of peace. Just as gold and silver lie hidden under the earth, and pearl and coral under the sea, peace and joy lie hidden in the activities of the mind. Desirous of acquiring these hidden treasures, if one dives and turns mental activities inward, one becomes full of love. Only one who has so filled oneself with love and who lives in the light of that love can be called human. Those devoid of love are demons, monsters and subhumans. That holy quality of love will not waver in its presence; it will be ever present, without change. It is one and indivisible. As the academic year 2015-2016 started in India in the first week of June, Puttaparthi was back into bubbling enthusiasm as teachers, students returned after 50 days of summer vacation. As it just started raining in Prashanthi, a flood of 3000 devotees from Andhra Pradesh's "furnace" Guntur district came to Puttaparthi on June 7th as part of their 3 day Parthi Yatra. I was told that there were 70% of devotees for whom it was a maiden visit to the holy abode. The Sathya Sai Organisation of Guntur had a perfect plan in place where they had made arrangements for a sight seeing tour of Parthi, a special paduka puja in Poorna Chandra Auditorium was conducted where devotees carried padukas for special puja which also included Hanuman Chalisa and Yagna under the guidance of renowned priests.. Why we say "Sai Ram“?

Why we say "Sai Ram“?

When you meet each other, do not shout hello or bye-bye, or some silly chatter. Let the moment of meeting be sanctified by the remembrance of God. Say, Ram Ram, or Om, or Hari Om, or Sai Ram.~ Sathya Sai Speaks X, Chap. 14

The quote from Swami (above) states in a nutshell why we greet someone with "Sai Ram". It is a remembrance of God, the one God that is the other person and ourselves.

**** In Bavaria, southern Germany, many people greet each other with "Gruess Gott", which means "Greet God". Same idea ***
When greeting someone with "Sai Ram", try to think of greeting not only the worldly body that you see but our SAI in that person. We could use any name of God; it is the intent and feeling that counts. We have happened to choose "Sai Ram" because of the universal appeal of that name as a mantra. (Some devotees do repetition of the Name --namasmarana-- with "Om Sri Sai Ram", repeating "Om Sri" on the in breath and "Sai Ram" on the out breath.)

The word "Sai" can be split into two: "Sa" and "Ai". We have been told that "Sa" means universal father, while "Ai" stands for universal mother. Sathya Sai Baba, our Sai, is our mother and father.

"Ram" can be viewed as a shortening of "Rama". One interpretation of this word is that "Ra" is the Fire Principle, which burns all to ash, while

"ma" stands for maya or illusion, so together, they mean the destruction of illusion.

Sai Baba told that "Rama" means "He who pleases, fills with bliss, causes delight", that "Rama" means the joy that comes from love

Thought for the Day - 16th June 2015

Explaining the characteristics of a devotee, Rama said to Narada, “Whoever with discrimination and renunciation (viveka and vairagya), and humility and wisdom (vinaya and vijnana) is aware of the knowledge of Reality, whoever is always immersed in the contemplation of My play (leela), whoever dwells on My name at all times and under all conditions, and whoever sheds tears of love whenever the Lord’s name is heard from any lip — these are My genuine devotees.” When the infant grows up into an adult, the mother won’t pay so much attention to its safety. The Lord doesn’t pay much attention to the wise one (jnani). For the jnani, their own strength is enough. Therefore, until one can rely on one’s own strength, one must be an infant in the Lord’s hands, as a devotee of the form, right? No one can become a devotee of the Formless Supreme (Nirguna bhaktha) without having been a devotee of the form (Saguna bhakta). (Prema Vahini Ch 48)

Divine Message

CHAPTER 55

O Lord, guide me towards Thy Light - Let my choice by Thy Will - Let Thy Will lead me to love the Holy Truth - Let the Truth carry the burdens of my doings in this life - Release me from being imprisoned in my body and mind - Release me from my own errors and free me into the world of the Absolute Knowledge of God! Such a prayer, My child, will surely affirm within you the truth. Be devoted and ask from Me only that which you truly deserve. A selfless prayer will surely be granted with the Lord's Blessings. A prayer that seeks fulfillment of the worldly illusions will follow the stains of its own impurity. Life, without prayer, is a life that has not yet learned to speak the only true language - Yes! The language of an open, sincere heart.

Remember, My child, that even the sins that remain attached to you cannot take away your right to pray! For, in the prayer, the might of the Master streams even in the one that has completely lost his way to Him. It is only in the power of a loving prayer that one begins to see and realize the difference between his true nature and his chosen way of leading his life. Prayer, My child, is not emotion - neither is it tears of self-pity - nor is it the endless wish list. It is the sacred moment in which one focuses upon his own state of purity and gathers his own inner strength to rectify his present state of ignorance. It is the sanctuary in which one chooses to leave all his bindings aside and concentrate all his time to learn to love the Giver, rather than His gifts.

Know, My child, the biggest gift of prayer is when one experiences the presence of the Master, instantly. The joy in receiving the Master, alone, is far bigger than receiving the gifts He brings. Just the simple arrival of the Beloved Mother fulfills every calling of the noble soul. When prayer experiences the union with the Master, such a prayer, My child, has reached the highest state of complete bliss. For such a soul that experiences a glimpse of the unity with the Universal Mother, he, My child, will resent his coming back to the worldly, external influences. He will only crave the union, My child, all his other worldly interests and attachments will begin to fade - all other pleasures will simply demean his existence, and he will anxiously await the next moment, hoping and living in the faith that the breath of God will awaken him, once again, in his true glory!

The power of prayer is not only inspirational, but it gives you the surge of purity that allows the inspirational vision to become the complete reality. Hence, My child, do not ever stop praying. Prayer is the strength of the coming moment. Fill the next moment with the riches of purity by spending the present in awakening it. You are what you believe yourself to be! If you believe that the Lord is far beyond your reach, then He will be! No sins can ever separate you from Him - the moment you have realized the wrong, in that moment of sincerity, you, My child, have seared the sins into a heap of ashes.

Do not worry about others' cynicism towards your approach to God. There is nothing to prove - it is the battle of one's own self purity with one's own perception of purity. Purity is absolute to the self - it is relative to the mind. Believe in the absolute - for in the absolute, lies the Divine Will. That, which is relative, will only bury you in the burden of making choices, binding you to more time and its repayment. Pray, My child - O Lord, I have made the one final choice - You! For in You, lies every right - every truth - every love. With that choice, I leave the rest to You. You, My Lord, must plan and carry out the final rescue - You are the only choice - Thy Will is the only strength - From now on, You, O Lord, are the Light that keeps me awake and away from all the worldly sins. I have sought You - I have found You and now that I have found You, I will never let You leave - Come, O Lord, make my world only Yours!
