SubramanianSwamy – 21 Things Most Indians Don’t Know About the Tough Guy1. His Father Was a Well Known Mathematician

Swamy was born in Mylapore, Chennai on Sept 15, 1939. His father, Sitaram Subramanian was at one time director of the Central Statistical Institute.
2. He Graduated in Mathematics from Hindu College (Finished 3rd in DU)
It was in the very stars that he was born under. He was not six months old, when his mathematician father Sitaram Subramanian, in 1940, changed jobs and moved from Chennai (then Madras) to Delhi, the seat of power.
3. Enrolled at Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata for Post Graduation

From Delhi, the seat of power, Swamy moved to Kolkata (then Calcutta) for PG studies. It was going to be his first battle ground.
4. Director of the Institute Happened to a be Professional Rival of Swamy’s Father

The institute at that time was headed by PC Mahalanobis who happened to be a professional rival of Swamy’s father. So when Mahalanobis learnt about Swamy, the latter began to get lower grades. Too bad (for Mahalanobis). Mahalanobis was the brain behind setting up of the Planning Commission, something that Prime Minister Narendra Modi after many decades intends to dismantle. He was the kind of person that no one (at least not someone studying at his institute) would want to develop animosity with.
5. Swamy Taught the Big Guy a Lesson

Swamy’s ability at crunching numbers and postulating theories, pitched him against PC Mahalanobis. His paper ‘Notes on Fractile Graphical Analysis’ published in Econometrica, 1963 had questioned a Mahalanobis statistical analysis method as not being original but only a differentiated form of an older equation, was an early expression of the rebel that Swamy is, a trait that has found expression both as an intellectual and as a politician.
6. Got a Recommendation for Harvard

Having demonstrated his ability for research, Hendrik S Houthakker, the American economist who was the referee for the paper published in Econometrica, recommended Swamy’s admission to Harvard.
7. Completed PhD from Harvard at 24

Backed by a full Rockefeller scholarship, in two and a half years, Swamy at 24 completed his PhD. At Harvard, having cut his teeth in mathematics in the early 1960s and armed with a doctorate at 24 years of age, by 27 he was a teacher at Harvard.
8. Co-Authored a Paper with the 1st American Who WonNobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences

Swamy co-authored a paper on theory of index numbers with Paul Samuelson. The paper was published in 1974.
9. Became an Expert on the Chinese Economy

In 1975, Swamy wrote a book titled “Economic Growth in China and India, 1952–70: A Comparative Appraisal” He learnt Chinese/Mandarin in just 3 months (when someone challenged him to learn this tough-language-to-learn in a year).
Till this day, Swamy is considered an authority on the Chinese economy and especially comparative analysis of Indian and China.
10. Got an Invite from Amartya Sen to Join DSE (Delhi School of Economics)

As an advocate of free markets economy, much before Manmohan Singh’s 1991 budget made it fashionable, Swamy’s market friendly views after moving from Harvard to Delhi School of Economics in 1968 were simply too radical and not palatable with Indira Gandhi’s socialist ‘Garibi Hatao’ India slogans. Anyhow, Swamy accepted Amartya Sen’s offer.
The position earmarked for a young academician with market friendly views was a full professorial chair on Chinese studies. But, by the time he traveled from Harvard to DSE, other traveler academics at the famed institute had changed their views on Swamy.
He was just offered a Reader’s rank at DSE. A sharp U-turn. Students backed Swamy.
11. Moved to IIT in 1969

Swamy taught economics to students at the IIT. He would often meet students at the hostels and discuss political and international views. By now, Swamy had made a name for himself. He suggested that India ought to do away with Five Year Plans and stop relying on foreign aid. According to him, it was possible to achieve 10% growth.
12. Indira Took Note of Swamy in 1970

Indira, one of India’s most powerful prime ministers, in a 1970 budget debate dismissed Swamy as a “Santa Claus with unrealistic ideas.”
This was probably the first that a national leader of her stature had gone to the extent of directly mimicking Swamy’s ideas. Swamy continued with his work nonetheless.
13. Establishment Goes After Swamy

The hostility cost him his IIT job from where he was unceremoniously sacked in December 1972. Swamy in 1973 sued the prestigious institute for wrongful dismissal. He won the suit in 1991 and to prove his point, he joined only for a day before resigning.
14. Political Inning Began in 1974

With a young wife, a new born daughter and no job, Swamy was contemplating heading back to America when fate intervened and launched him into politics.
A phone call by Jan Sangh stalwart Nanaji Deshmukh picking Swamy to represent the party in the Rajya Sabha had him elected to parliament in 1974.
15. Dared the Establishment during the Emergency Days

Independence and the gross human tragedy that unfolded after partition, was something that a young Swamy saw up close. He was witness to the partition survivors’ daily struggle taking place just outside the family’s government allotted house at Turkman Gate, Delhi.
The emergency (1975-77) made a political hero out of him. Swamy defied and evaded arrest warrants for the entire 19 month period.
His most daring act during emergency was coming into India from America, breaking through security cordons of parliament, attending a Lok Sabha session on 10th August 1976, managing to slip out of parliament, escaping from the country and returning to America.
16. Founding Member of the Party that Won Elections after Emergency

Swamy was one of the founding members of the Janata Party that swept the Indira Gandhi emergency regime out of power in 1977. Though the party splintered but Swamy stuck on and was its president since 1990 till the party was merged with BJP in 11 August, 2013. Opposition often joked about him heading Janta Party as being a general without an army. But, he has been that way for a long time.
17. Swamy’s Blueprint – A Guiding Light for Manmohan Singh in Early 1990s

As the country’s commerce and law minister during Chandra Shekhar’s brief term as Prime Minister in 1990-91, Swamy laid the foundations of economic reforms in India by creating a blue print. The same blue print was later picked up by finance minister Manmohan Singh under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao to deliver the country of Nehruvian socialism.
18. Given a Cabinet Rank When in Opposition

Being president of Janta Party and an opposition leader, Swamy has the distinction of being handed out a cabinet rank by the ruling party. Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao in 1994 appointed Swamy as Chairman with Commission of Labor Standards and International Trade with a cabinet rank.
19. An Academician Turned Lawyer

Contrary to what most Indians believe, Swamy, as pointed out above, is a mathematician by education. It was the turn of events in his life that turned him to politics and law.
20. Played a Crucial Role in Exposing 2G Scam

After a long hibernation, Swamy writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2008 seeking permission to prosecute A Raja over illegal allotment of mobile spectrum bands unraveled the colossal 2G Scam.
21. Made it Possible for Indians to Access the Kailash Mansarovar

Subramanian Swamy played an important role in making it possible for people of Hindu faith in India to access the Kailash Mansarovar religious pilgrimage route.
To make it happen, he had met Deng Xiaoping China’s top guy of the time (April 1981).

Some info from his interview to the media.
1. He has not formal qualification in law, but learnt law by self study and application.
2. He prepares the case documents himself, assisted by his wife and volunteer law graduates and interns.
3. There are many honest and god fearing bureaucrats who help him with documents and papers.
4. Money is not a problem with enough flowing in from donors. He is not in the race to earn and accumulate wealth, and is happy to make sufficient to meet expenses.
5. Fighting even a single case is time and energy consuming, and so he cannot handle more even if he wants to.
6. His views and statements on politicians and leaders are backed by sufficient documentary proof, and cannot be called derogatory. e.g. sonia's educational qualifications or jaya's assets.
7. His life and outlook changed after he had a meeting with kanchi sankaracharya in the seventies; he took some vows after this and he lives by them.

I am impressed about Dr Swamy based on these news items.
I think anyone that can go after corrupt politicians should be commended.

JJ may have done good but it is public money (and it seems based on the conviction she seems to have helped herself to that money too).
I am sure there are far more corrupt politicians but that does not condone JJ for doing what she is convicted for

Parmacharya Sri Chandrashekhar Saraswati – God in human form

Some excerpts from swamy's article. Link at the end for those interested.

But my upbringing, first in an English convent school, and then ten years in USA had created a distance between me and traditional Hindu culture of bowing and prostrating before any elder, or anyone in saffron clothes. Therefore, I was the “modern” Indian, believer in science, and with little concern for spiritual diversions.

I was coming to Delhi surreptitiously to make my now famous appearance in Parliament and subsequent disappearance, while a MISA warrant was pending for my arrest in the Emergency. At that moment, as the plane landed, I resolved that whenever the Emergency gets over, I shall search for Parmacharya and meet him.

Parmacharya was sitting in a cottage, a few kilometers outside Kanchipuram. As soon as he saw me, he abruptly got up, and turned his back on me, and went inside the cottage. My friends who took me there were greatly embarrassed, and I was puzzled.

Just as I was getting into the car, a priest came running to me. He said “Parmacharya wants to see you, so please come back”. Again puzzled, I walked back to the cottage.

Back at the cottage, a smiling Parmacharya was waiting for me. He first asked me in Tamil: “Do you understand Tamil?” I nodded. In those days, I hardly knew much Tamil, but I hoped the Parmacharya would speak in the simplest Tamil to make it easy to understand.

He then asked me another question: “Who gave you permission to leave my cottage?” The Tamil word he used for “permission” was of Sanskrit origin, which I immediately understood.

Then Parmacharya said: “Now you may go. But in the future when you come, you cannot leave till I give you permission to leave.”

Parmacharya spoke to me for 1-1 1/2 hours on all important subjects. He gave me guidelines on how to conduct myself in politics and what was necessary to protect the national interest of the country.
He told me that in politics, I should never bother about money or position, because both would follow me whenever an occasion demanded. But I should not be afraid to stand alone. He told me that all great persons of India were those who changed the thinking of the people from a particular set way of thought to a new way of thinking. “That is the permanent achievement for a politician, not merely becoming Minister or Prime Minister. Great persons, starting with Adi Shankara, to Mahatma Gandhi dared to stand alone and change the trend of people’s thought. But did either hold a government position?” he asked me. He said “If you dare to think out fresh solutions for current problems, without bothering about your popularity, and without caring for whether a government position comes to you or not, you will have my blessings.” When he said that I felt a strange sensation of happiness. I suddenly felt very strong.

I met the Parmacharya so many times and received his oral benediction and advice. But I never gave it publicity or got myself photographed. During his life time, I did not boast of my proximity to him either, although whenever I came to the Kanchi Mutt, always without appointment, he would see me. If he was asleep, he was awakened by his close helpers to whom he had obviously given instructions about me. There may not be another god in human form for another 100 years, but it was my honour to have known him and received his blessings. He may not be here today in human form, but because of what he had instructed me, I know and feel his is around.

But one has to keep in mind that there is a God’s scheme, redemption for the sinner what we call as prayaschitam. The ultimate revenge belongs to the divine. As human beings we have no right to revenge; only self-defence and righteous struggle. As Hindus, this is easy to understand because we believe in the law of Karma. People who see me fighting fiercely with Indira Gandhi, Chandrasekhar and Jayalalitha and then working with them get confused or even disgusted at what they perceive as my opportunism. I do not make up with those I quarrel with at height of their power, but when they cease to be in office. The reason for this flexibility in making friends out of enemies of yester year is the advice that Parmacharya once gave me in 1977: “India is plagued by divisions, and the egos of our rajas had played havoc with our national security, making it easy for foreigners to conquer us. Therefore, never hesitate to create unity, without of course compromising on the fundamental concepts of morality.

These three fundamental concepts of morality are
I shall not speak lie, even if I withhold truth.
I shall practice what I shall preach.
What I do will be transparent for all to see. I consider myself therefore free to plan my political strategy as I see best, without regard to criticism from my political opponents, but within these three moral limits.

Thank you so much for the reference and links , Sri Balasubramani ...
Very informative!

Mrs I. Gandhi Handled Mr S.Swamy best.

She saw to it that he was out of IIT delhi and out of the country for most of the seventies.

he has very poor credentials for doing anything positive in india .

his only contribution is to file cases against all and sundry.

after his joining BJP, Modi is smart to keep him out of govt. and any significant position

he has his nuisance value.

how long tamilnadu puts up with him ,let us see.

This is absurd.

What do you mean by Mrs I. Gandhi handled Mr. S. Swamy best?

What do you mean by ‘doing anything positive in India’?

Do you have any idea about the risk involved in exposing scams, scandals, corruption, etc in India.

Do you have any idea about the fate of whistle blowers in India?

And it is not as easy as writing a blah blah posting in this Forum.

And above all, everyone may prove nuisance to someone…lol

You are the right person to become JJ's propaganda secretary. You have the requisite qualification.

Unfortunately the wheel of justice grinds painfully slow. If only the cases had proceeded in normal phase, sonia, chidambaram, raja, kanimozhi, marans and many more corrupt politicians would have been convicted or judgement delivered for or against them.

In all tv debates when swamy makes the pronouncement sonia or chidambaram is guilty, the anchor or congress spokesperson springs to defense of sonia etc. with the oft talked statement - everybody is innocent till proved guilty. Swamy's usual retort is - I will say he/she is guilty because I am convinced of their guilt and trying to prove it. How can I argue the case if I assume he is not guilty. It is for the defense to prove otherwise and for the judge to decide.

But the anchor deftly cuts swamy's response and does not allow a word to be said against gandhis. But modi or bjp or rss bashing panelists are allowed to say anything.

Hope Subramanian Swamy the maverick goes after Sonia and Rahul as well MK and his mafia ...

There was an interesting, and very valid, point made by one of the panelists on the Times Now discussion, on saturday, regarding the sentence meted out to JJ.

The verdict in the DA case comes after 18 years after the said conviction was purported to have taken place, and in the meantime, the accused (now convicted) has managed to come to power twice in TN, and has done enough to garner enormous goodwill in the minds of people. It is a larger than life JJ who is doing the rounds now. This delay in justice has allowed a corrupt individual, who, while holding the highest office in the state, has used the position to personal gains.

Some points that follow are (imo only):

1. Justice should be speeded up. A time frame depending on the enormity of the work involved, in the case by an independent panel, should be drawn up and courts should adhere to it.
2. The quantum of sentence should be severe depending on the office, the convicted holds. It has to be seen in the backdrop of absolute power in the hands of the convicted.
3. If pt 1 is not possible, the number of years, subsequent to the offence, which the convicted spent freely during the interim period till day of judgement, must be added to the normal sentence. At the least.

Hope our judicial system is also revamped to deliver much needed justice to the afflicted.

Very interesting, but opens up intersting possibilities.
1. Justice must be expedited and sentence to be handed out and 'enjoyed' as soon as possible after crime is committed.
2. Adding freely spent time to be added to the sentence may mean a four year sentence may extend to twenty years, say, for no fault of the 'criminal'. Recently the supreme court has ordered the release of all under-trials whose cases have not reached the court or cases are partly heard to be released if they have spent half the max punishment in jail. If guilty, the fellow escapes lightly, if innocent still lucky to get out from prison (though may not get any compensation).
Two cases against salman khan are in hearing for decades - blackbuck hunting and running over people sleeping on the pedastrian path. How to handle this?
3. The ramjanma bhoomi issue too is pending even after the final verdict, because the court has to respond to the applications made by the parties. In fact the judgement was given only because the judge was retiring and had to before the last day; else a new bench has to be set up and wait for another 20 years.
Both the judiciary and the lawyers are not interested in speedy hearing of cases for reasons known and unknown. At least gujarat govt did something - courts operating in shifts and reducing vacation. Courts must be brought under essential services act and made to work 24x7x365.

we have very high expectations of judiciary - the suggestions above will not happen in our life time.

there can be a time limit on every case say 5 years if it does not conclude , it should be taken as lapsed and closed.

on economic front the country has to move forward .

if every executive decision is challenged in courts , who will take decisions and how will country move forward.

all economic decisions should be made above law in interest of the country.

court can decide on other criminal matters.

there can be a time limit on every case say 5 years if it does not conclude , it should be taken as lapsed and closed.

That is not justice rendered. Of course kejri will be the beneficiary.

Fine!!!

JJ has been convicted, sentenced etc. coz some judge of some special court outside of her state of domicility pronounced verdict she has acquired assets disproportionate to her income.

And some komali holds his head high in victory.

Are others innocent? (Matravargal athanai perum uthamar dhaana sollungal?)

Which politician has not acquired wealth disproportionate to income?

Barring a few, is not every indian politician a crook or scoundrel, who has amassed wealth by corrupt means?

Would SS dare file a suit against MK, Stalin & Co and the motley crowd of politicians in India for disproportionate assets?

Perhaps this post of mine may be removed by the moderators. But a few in this forum would have read this, would think sensibly and that would suffice.

why do you feel all the time that people are out to get you?.

perhaps you could tone down your comments and express your thoughts better

i saw nothing offensive as such to warrant removal of your post IMHO

not many have high opinion of politicians and not many decent people join politics also.

calling someone politician is treated as an abuse by many.

suddenly politicians have become vulnerable and everyone is gunning for them

some are getting hurt due to over activism of whistle blowers.

but both whistle blowers and politicians are getting hurt in this confrontation.

only common people suffer due to dislocation of day to day living and consequent inconvenience.

Calling a Spade a Spade does not seem acceptable here.

Calling a Spade a Spade does not seem acceptable here.
I also share that characteristic.

I also openly call a spade a spade . only I do it softly

if you could be a little softer and say the same using without being blunt , you might get your message across better.

also try humour .

you have a brilliant mind

pl remember there are many not very tolerant members who take offense at the drop of a hat.

if you are sending a message to them , it can be done effectively without compromising on your position on various matters

people are human. they will bond when you stretch a bit and try understanding them

good luck

It would be in the interest of the accused to finish off the trial in either case. If he is innocent, then it is by default. If he is actually guilty then should he be found so, the fear of compounded sentence would prove as a catalyst to finish off the case.

But I guess this is mere wishful thinking. We are interested more in loopholes than in justice, until the cudgel strikes individually !
