A remarkable achievement! A fitting reply to those who question India's ability to compete with countries such as the U.S. in technology. An example that Indians can do better than the best.

The most significant achievement is the following: First time right & lowest cost

The $74 million bill for India’s Mars Orbiter Mission is the lowest compared to missions of other space agencies. For instance, NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN's (MAVEN), which reached Mars on September 21, cost was $617 million.

European, US and Russian probes have managed to orbit or land on the planet, but only after several attempts. Given the high rate of failures -- only 21 of the total of 51 missions sent to Mars by various countries have been successful -- the success of MOM in the very first attempt is certain to boost India's global standing in space research.

Wonderful achievement!! Many wishes to the scientists & staff at ISRO.

Hope all chevvai dosham is removed from the lives of Indians ... :-)

My morning was enriched as I was able to see the live telecast on DD . The moments before 8AM were exciting

It cost only 450 crores much less than it cost to make the movie Gravity.

Modi says the name MOM for the mission had something to do with its success.

It is truly a historic day for india and all of us who could see mangalyan in orbit around mars.

will it be the moon next?

Congratulations to ISRO team. It is a wonderful achievement.

This Mission proves a point that if Indian intelligence is properly coordinated, we can do wonders.

It is reported that all the scientists are indian educated and many through the traditional regional language medium.

Modi govt should recognize the efforts of the scientists and ensure more facilities, funding, environment, better pay.

indigenous products do not get govt protection

all consumer items made locally perish due to products from korea, japan and china being preferred

opening out of india is killing local industry.

who thinks of ECIL or BPL TVs or HMT watches .they are all phased out

dept of electronics used to help companies like ECIL and Instrumentation ltd which are being wound up or area of operation limited

ITI is sick.BEL is surviving on defence orders.Keltron and state electronics companies are closed I think.

there is no pride in anything made in india.

modi suddenly thought of space due to mangalyan.

where are the nuclear power plant programs of atomic energy.?

It requires amajor push from govt

We have no visionary leaders like Bhabha and Sarabhai to to promote the indigenous movement

our csir labs are looked down upon and under strangleholds of bureaucrats.

stones are being thrown on defence labs for poor performance

what is the point in waking up suddenly and pay lip service to achievement of indian science and technology.?

Meet the brains behind India's Mangalyaan

Of course, there are hundreds of scientists, engineers and others who worked on making India's Mars mission a success. These are the scientists who lead the team and the mission.
K. Radhakrishnan – Chairman of ISRO and Secretary in the Department of Space. He took charge as the Chairman in 2009. Born in Kerala and educated in IIT, he joined ISRO at the age of 22. He is also a carnatic vocalist and Kathakali artist. He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 2014.
Mylswamy Annadurai - Programme Director of Mangalyaan. Born in Tamil Nadu he completed his education in Coimbatore and joined ISRO at the age of 24 in 1982.
S. Ramakrishnan – Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre. He joined ISRO in 1972 and has since then contributed immensely to many missions including Mangalyaan launch.
S.K. Shivkumar – Director of ISRO Satellite Centre. Born in Mysore and educated in IISC, Bengaluru he joined ISRO in 1976 and has developed the telemetry system for the Mangalyaan.
V. Adimurthy – Mission Concept Designer of MOM. Born in Andhra Pradesh and educated in IIT, Kanpur, he joined ISRO in 1973.
P. Kunhikrishnan – Project Director of PSLV Programme. Born in Kerala he joined ISRO in 1986. Under him the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre has had seven successful PSLV launches.
Subbiah Arunan – Project Director of MOM. Born in Tamil Nadu he completed mechanical enginnering and joined ISRO in 1984. He was responsible to build the Mangalyaan spacecraft.
A.S. Kiran Kumar - Director of the Satellite Application Centre. Born in Karnataka he completed in education in Bangalore University and IISC. He joined ISRO in 1975.
M. Chandradathan - Director of the Liquid Propulsion System. Born in Kerala and having graduated with a degree in chemical engineering he joined ISRO in 1972. He is a specialist in rocket propulsion.
M.Y.S. Prasad - Director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Born in Andhra Pradesh he graduated with a degree in electronics and communication engineering and joined ISRO in 1975. He was in-charge of range safety and schedules and the rocket port.
V. Keshavaraju – Mission Director for post launch operations. He and his team will track the journey of Mangalyaan in the outer space.

Meet the brains behind India's Mangalyaan

Is it orbiting clockwise :-)?

I think it should be anti-clockwise. If clockwise there will be only chasing and catching. If anticlockwise there will be head on collision, grand confrontation and annihilation-mahabharath style. I am watching Mahabharath now on TV. LOL.

Great.

How can we forget them. Women scientists of the mars mission.

Sri Sarang

Thanks for posting the happy faces behind the successful mission !

My friends shared with me some facts some of which may have been posted here but it is nice to review it all together!

Some interesting facts of MOM...The Mars Mission

1. INDIA becomes the first country in the world to do so in its maiden attempt, leaving behind US, Europe and Russia.
2. INDIA becomes the only Asian country in the world so far to successfully accomplish this mission, not even China.
3. INDIA completes this mission in just 450 crores, 1/10th of the cost incurred by NASA for similar Misson 'Maven'.
4. It's less than the cost of many of the Hollywood movies.
5. This mission has been executed without any association with any foreign country. ..its completely indigenous to India
6. The spacecraft has travelled more than 650 crore kilometres in around 300 days to complete this journey.

India was particularly proud that MOM was developed with homegrown technology and for a bargain price of about $75 million — a cost that Modi quipped was lower than many Hollywood film budgets. By comparison, NASA's much larger Maven mission cost nearly 10 times as much at $671 million.
India wanted the spacecraft — also called Mangalyaan, meaning "Mars craft" in Hindi —to show the world its ability to design, plan, manage and operate a difficult, deep-space mission. India has already conducted dozens of successful satellite launches, including sending up the Chandrayaan-1 lunar orbiter, which discovered key evidence of water on the Moon in 2008.

The country's space scientists are already planning new missions, including putting a rover on the Moon. But space agency chief K. Radhakrishnan said their main focus would be to continue developing technologies for commercial and navigational satellite applications.

Heartiest congratulations to all our ISRO scientists for this wonderful achievement.

The media spends a disproportionately long time on negative news, scandals and chasing non events. If ISRO chief went to tirupathy it is bad news for the pseudo secular press. As ordinary hindus take the keys of car, two wheeler or house to the local temple for seeking divine blessings, ISRO scientists took models of rockets to the temple for doing puja. ISRO must get more support and funding to pursue its goals. And support deserving and meritorious students to choose science and research.

Costed less than 500 crore election ad campaign of rahul gandhi.

Going to temple and offering a prayer prior to a major event is to acknowlege the existence of hidden variables. It is also a form of mature expression (and one does not have to be a theist of any sect to appreciate this).. It is about doing the best and hoping for the best results by recognizing human inability to control all the variables.

It's a kind of treat for twitter lovers who saw exchanges between the United States Nasa's Curiosity Rover and India's Isro's Mars Orbiter immediately after the successful insertion of India's satellite into the Mars Orbit on Wednesday.

Twitter handle of the Nasa's latest mission welcomed the Isro's Mars Orbiter saying "Namaste, @MarsOrbiter! Congratulations to @ISRO and India's first interplanetary mission upon achieving Mars orbit."

The Isro's Mars Orbiter quickly responded: "Howdy @MarsCuriosity? Keep in touch. I'll be around".

While @MarsCuriosity is the official account of the Nasa's Mars mission, the @MarsOrbiter belongs to the Isro.

The @MarsCurosity (Curiosity Rover) says it is the Nasa's latest mission to explore the surface of Mars. "Roving the Red Planet since Aug. 5, 2012 (PDT) (Aug 6 UTC)", says its introductory page.

The @MarsOrbiter (Isro's Mars Orbiter) is the Isro's twitter handle created on Wednesday. It's introductory page says: "India's first mission to Mars. Orbiting the Red Planet since Sep 24, 2014. Explorer. Loves science, photography and long cruises".

one south indian scientific advisor to govt of india was a follower of satya saibaba.

He was widely ridiculed for believing in a Godman performing miracles like producing vibhuthi or vigraha by slieght of hand.

but he stuck to his guns.

when people keep their religeous beliefs private and not invade the office work space it is fine

worshipping vigrahas of Mangalyan before launch is bit of a joke.

Congratulations.
Great to see that our scientists have achieved this. Prime Minister Modi's congratulatory speech after the achievement was superb.
The present chairman of ISRO Dr K(Koppillil ).Radhakrishnan is an accomplished Carnatic Musician and traditional "Kathakali" Artist. He has told that after his retirement this year-end he would spend more time in "Kathakali".
