The Tamil language

Dear Ronnie,

I grew up in a home where everyone spoke English and only sometimes my parents would speak Tamil to each other but not to us kids.

Even though I could read Tamil script a little but my spoken Tamil was hopeless.

But as I became a teen..I started watching Tamil movies and my Tamil improved...but firstly I picked up all words that are used in fighting! LOL

Now I speak fairly well.

So keep seeing more Tamil movies and you will learn speaking Tamil eventually.

This suggestion is actually very productive. My son writes down the lyrics in english/tamil and sings with the video. Look, there are many fans to this 'Ballelakka Ballelakka' song:

[May be 'Gangnam Style' is a plagiarised form of 'Style song of Rajini' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvgI6pxzbSQ ;)]

Vanakam. I have never spoken tamil. My mother spoke tamil to other elders, but not to us. I did ask her to teach me the language, but she did not take me seriously. I have learnt a little reading d writing the alphabets but would like to speak the language first. the way a little child normally starts. Is there an easy way to learn. I would like to keep this beautiful language alive.

You may try something on your own and inspire yourself!

P.S:

But, you may have every chance to get lost in such exercise [into movie crap!] So, quit such exercise, once you get the hang of Tamil, and read real moral works of Tamils like 'THIRUKKURAL' and theistic works of 'Alwars and Nayanmars'. Enjoy TAMIL the right way!

Dear Govinda Sir,

To read and understand chaste Tamil it takes minimum 8 years!

We understood chaste Tamil only when we were in the 8th class in Tamil medium school.

To speak Tamil, it is easier to mingle and talk with (good) Tamil speaking people! :)

Vanakam all. It is a blessed honor to become part of this forum. I did not know that this forum existed until I stumbled over it a few days ago. Being DEVOTEE of a number of spiritual organisations, and having very little knowledge, is a shame. I would love to educate myself in our beautiful culture and share the knowledge with others. I would also love to speak tamil, although I have never spoken tamil before. One of my goals is to give a speech for at least 5 minutes in tamil. With LOVE to all. Anbe Sivam, Sivame anbu. Nandri, Vanakam

Dear TBS garu,

There is a saying in Sanskrit that goes that "Mere bookish knowledge is not enough..he who puts into practice what he has learned is indeed a scholar"

....... So, he meant 'perum thalai-gaL, not kizhavar-gaL' - 'பெரும் தலைகள், கிழவர்கள் அல்ல'.
Dear Govinda Sir,

 definition. But it does not add kizhavigaL!

So better definition is: 'perum thalaigaL; mudhiyOr alla!!

This IS 'Gender equality'! :thumb:

RR M'dam,

Upon 'Gender Equality', Women become Men! ;)
பால் சமத்துவத் ஆல், பெண்கள் ஆண்கள் ஆவார்கள்!

Univeersal law; there is no equality.

Women are not equal to men.
Humans are not equal to animals.
Machines are not equal to men.
Each is special and more than equal in its domain.
Samam does not mean equal.

If this is understood, then perception about varnas and castes will change.

Proves again that machine is not equal to human!

It should be 'சமத்துவத்தால்' and not 'சமத்துவத் ஆல்'

'ஆல்' means banyan tree! Ref:
ஆல் - தமிழ் விக்கிப்பீடியா

Moothore - better word for veteran, I think.
Google translate gives these words:

அனுபவமுள்ளவர் (anubhavamuLLavar), பழம்பெரும் (pazham perum) and முதுபெரும் (mudhuperum).

'mooththor' means seniors! So we can settle for 'mudhuperiyOr' or in short 'periyOr'!

Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still be considered sexy. - Anonymous

There is a common word as prefix to men and women who have their doctorate degree - 'munaivar' - முனைவர்.

Good that there is no 'munaivi' which rhymes with 'manaivi' (wife)!! :D
