If you believe so, I hope you are shorting the US stock market.

I hope Mr. Brahmachari does not take your advice seriously. LOL

Five years into a powerful bull market, there seems to be little on the horizon to cheer up the bears. So the phenomenal rally raises the question: Where is the market getting its strength? And more important, can this aging bull continue to run? Our answer: Don’t give up on the bull yet—it may be younger than it looks. “We don’t see a bear market coming,” says Henry Smith, chief investment officer of Haverford Trust. “We believe that March 2009 represented a generational low, and that this is the middle of a sustained bull market.”

Another year of gains will be supported by stronger economic and corporate underpinnings, and, just as important, improving sentiment among investors. By most measures, stocks are fairly priced, if not bargains. Given expected earnings growth of nearly 10% in 2014, we think stock prices could rise that much and perhaps more if investors again prove themselves willing to pay more for each dollar of corporate profits, ratcheting up the market’s price-earnings ratio. A reasonable range to expect would be 8% to 12% returns, including dividends. An 8% price gain would put the S&P 500 in the vicinity of 1,944, translating into roughly 17,300 on the Dow Jones industrial average; a 10% gain would put the S&P 500 at 1,980, the Dow a bit over 17,600. With dividends, the S&P’s returns could reach 12%.

I dont understand why some forum members always try to bash the US. Why not bash Russia or China or Saudi Arabia?

Case of sour grapes?

Russia was and is a dependable friend and ally. China a potential trading partner. USA good for individuals but a potentially unfriendly and divisive power as far as India is concerned. Its interference in Indian politics and treatment of Hindu nationalists is despicable. Its destruction of Asian countries is known to the world. To sum up, it is unfriendly to India.

The BJP megaphone is sprouting, but wait till BJP official policy changes. These party parrots do not understand world politics. There are no friends or enemies in the world politics. It is only allies in time of need. Countries create partner in time of need. Enemies - enemy is a friend.
Almost every well to do family has some close relative living in USA. Most of the so called bashers would aspire to visit USA. If and when they visit they change their tune. Of course there is the "case of sour grapes", in addition there is jealousy.

American foreign policy too is idiotic, they really screwup big times. So I would say is a combination of things.

i tend to agree with this. the u.s. with its narrow policies of 'us vs them', has since independence, caused india a lot of grief through its arming of pakistan. and the afghans. all those guns, currently busy against al qaeda, will be turned against india, once usa leaves afghanistan, with active help from pak isi.

yes, on a personal level, all of us, have good relations (pun meant) with the usa. but the u.s. govt, particularly the democratic party of late, has been inimical to indian interest.

it may be time now to remember, without being sentimental, that nations have only permanent interests, and not permanent friends. it is high time, we clear our border dispute with china, even if it means ceding territories for peace. those forsaken mountainous land bordering tibet, is of no use.

whatever may come, it is high time, we do the same with pakistan. it is ridiculous that after 60+ years post independence, we are involved with border wars with our neighbours. this is a distraction that we can live without.

Thick heads can only sprout innuendos. Perhaps a revisit to the post will clear agyana. Dung throwers will remain dung throwers.
American life is good for individuals. American money too good for Indian parents, temple renovation etc. Issue is american policy that has destroyed countries.
Only last week Obama said that us reserves the right to attack first even without provocation. India under modi, like China, will become strong to deal with us on equal terms. I will post what USA has done to india and Indian PMS in the past. Denial of visa included.

How US presidents have treated indian pms/

Excerpts from a blog on the treatment meted out to indian prime ministers visiting usa. It is expected that usa knows that modi is made of different material and past indignities on visiting indian pm will not be tolerated.

MODI AND AMERICAN VISA:DOES HE NEED IT?

DR. Seshachalam Dutta

1. Nehru made four visits to the U.S., the first one in 1949, asking for help for food aid to avert famine, which was categorically denied and it was the Soviets who came to his rescue. He viewed himself as World Leader advocating non-alignment without realizing that to be non-aligned needs internal strength, thus making it obvious he was secretly cherishing delusions of grandeur.

He later visited the U.S in 1959 during the Presidency of John F. Kennedy. Kennedy has been reported to have remarked that Nehru’s was the worst State visit that he had experienced. Nehru was so "preachy" that Kennedy reportedly remarked that to him “Nehru sounded like a town preacher caught in a whore house.” Jacqueline Kennedy noted that Indira Gandhi, who incidentally always accompanied Nehru on his foreign visits as “great prune, pushy and always looking as if sucking a lemon.”

3. Indira Gandhi’s visit to President Nixon to justify her impending military intervention in East Pakistan (now Bangla Desh) is also an example of failure of personal diplomacy. Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh writes that, intentionally she was kept waiting in the receiving room in the White House while discussing with Kissinger the US tilt towards Pakistan. For one thing she was tough enough to order invasion of East Pakistan en route to India. Here again, she did not realize that personal diplomacy has no role in decision making.

4. Time Magazine in contempt remarked “we gave everything to Indians but the courage to fight”. That was the extent of personal diplomacy of Indian Prime Ministers with the U.S.!!
5. When President Jimmy Carter visited India in 1978 he paid glowing tributes to Gandhi, Nehru and Morarji Desai as leaders who were dedicated to the country and endured long jail sentences; and at the end in a private conversation with his aids, he was caught on tape saying “we should deliver cold and blunt message to Desai." This was widely reported in the press which was smoothened and downplayed by Morarji in public.

6. While Nixon was visiting Khrushchev, U2 spy plane was in the air and was shot down capturing the pilot. Khrushchev called off the meeting and Nixon had to abruptly fly home. Could Morarji have done that? He could have,if only he had the sense that prestige of the Nation rested on his shoulders. Modi realizes this more than Morarji Desai and probably more than Khrushchev.
7. when Indian parliament was attacked by Pakistani terrorists, there was wide spread speculation as to how India would retaliate, as retaliation if it were to be initiated was quite justifiable. After all, for the attack by terrorists on 9/11 in New York the U.S. fought two decade long wars. But Bush speaking to the press about the Pakistani terrorist attack on India’s parliament announced that he had asked “Vajpayee to stand down.” Asking the leader of another sovereign Nation to "stand down?” He would dare not say that to an Israeli P.M.
8. Ordinary civilized and friendly manners of the Indian prime ministers are perceived as signs of weakness, as none of them is as cocky as Khrushchev who did not hesitate to take off his shoe and show his profound displeasure and resentment without any fear. Modi is civilized and soft spoken but must not be perceived as a weakling by the western powers.

9. Probably, all there is to be known about Modi is already known through CIA and other investigative reporters from US. Robert Kaplan, an advisor to the U.S armed forces visited Chief Minister Modi and wrote in his book “Monsoon” fairly accurate assessment of Modi’s priorities. Modi’s visit would not change Obama’s stand on Kashmir or nuclear issues, both of which Modi declared as his priorities in the past. After all, Obama is going to be a lame duck president in a year. Modi would achieve nothing to have a ‘vegetarian dinner’ in the White House in September 2014 with the lame duck President who may or may not be able to implement any long term Indo-US relationship policies.

Sookta Sumana: DOES VISA MEAN ANYTHING TO MODI, SHOULD IT MEAN ANYTHING MORE TO HIM NOW THAT HE IS THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA, DOES HE NEED IT?

Amazing! Such an expert peroration on foreign policy in four sentences. There must be a place in US government to accommodate such an out of the earth intellect.

Once one (some, not many) is settled in usa with a house, car and a decent bank balance, he starts behaving as if other commentators have not visited usa and are dying to visit. What a wrong and low opinion. Not only that, permission to stay in usa in any form has given them the god given right to bash, indians, indian parties/groups that value and promote indian culture and individuals who value, respect and practice such glorious culture. Western wealth and comfort has given them the haughtiness to abuse their mother land like converts to other religions who are more fanatical in denigrating their born-religion.

Russian foreign policy does not destroy countries? What is happening to its best friend Ukraine? Why is China sending warships to Vietnam?

When do people think the US will attack India or vice versa?

In the age of Global corporation, Global customers and Global shareholders aided by boundary-less internet, twitter, facebook, Google search & information the physical boundaries of countries do not matter.

All that matters is that those who are in the top 1% want to control most wealth. They can use any means to manipulate the masses to keep their money and power intact.

The politicians are controlled by direct corruption or indirect corruption (campaign contributions) or both. It is only when two very rich parts collide everyone else pays price by going through severe recession.

China, India, many American workers to name a few are exploited. In the USA there is a powerful lobby by those that manufacture weapons and that would want constant conflict. They have partners in other countries.

Similarly the banking crisis that affected almost all countries had partners in crime in many countries who were willing to destroy large number of people for any amount of personal gain.

Politicians are like puppets who know what button to push to keep people in line. They may use patriotism, fear, anger , greed and any other emotions to control a large number of people using the money of rich and powerful.

Once in a while there may be a Modi now and then who are less controllable by traditional means of power and money. The party he represents may have corrupt elements but he may be above it all. Only way to beat such a person is to figure out a way to initiate a smear campaign.

I know the above is a bit cynical and harsh but no country is anyone's friend or enemy. Only the richest elite have the real control and they generally for selfish reasons are in alignment across the globe.

dear Sri Sangom,

Welcome back. How do you do? I pray to God to give you good health. Please keep coming here as often as is possible.

Thank you, Shri Vaagmi, for your kind words. My health is very indifferent nowadays and so I am unable to spend time on the PC for a few days together. Still, on days when I am slightly better, I try to. Hence, please excuse me for my erratic visits to this forum.

I think S Hussain should have known that US is too big an entity to comprehend with his pea nut brain. When the world has a severe drought it is US to which countries look up to to feed their hungry millions so that they survive in one piece without getting gobbled up by the millions. Do you remember PL 480 imports and the snide description that India's millions lived from ship load to ship load of PL 480 substandard wheat? US is a Huge MNC run with utmost efficiency. Its policies are decided by a few powerful individuals and Corporates. A war, a subversion, an assassination of a leader, a sale of deadly weapons, a dropping of a nuclear bomb, a straffing with napalm to defoliate an entire forest along with the hiding humans and animals and anything and every thing here happens only first as a bubble of thought in the conference room there and then at the place of action. Saddam was a fool as he banged his head against the wall. US's debt is internal debt and so it is not deadly.

In India we have companies who avail finance from Commercial banks. Either the business idea fails, the management is poor, or the intentions of the entrepreneur itself was to milk the banks -- we have bad debts. These bad debts are so huge that they threaten the viability of the lending bank itself. After making adequate provision for the bad debts the bank has nothing left to pay its share holders even if it does a little bit of fudging about determining the bad debt and naming it as such. And Govt of India is the major shareholder who has to worry about its banking company's viability and survival apart from the depositors. So what do we do? There is an innovative trick which is used to whitewash and sanitize the Balance sheets of the banks. We call it asset reconstruction. We convert bad assets into good assets by using this method and avoid providing for their failure in course of time. Every one is happy that the reckoning has been postponed for another day. The shareholder gets his dividend, the employees get their rise, the executives get their promotion, the shares sell as usual in the market, the depositors just do not bother and every thing is hunky and dory till the day of reckoning. Internal debt of US is far better than this hoax played by Indian banks, GOI, and the Industrialists. In US such games are not played. If you reach bankruptsy, you will be ruthlessly closed and rateable payed to your creditors and you will be just forgotten. USD is supported by pretty strong fundamentals and hence will not let the country go bankrupt ever. This is my line of argument.

Thanks a lot for the lucid explanations. Your above post and Shri Prasad's posts make it clear that the US is a giant ans other countries cannot even hope to harm it. Thanks a lot.
