'Jallikattu', an ancient bull-taming festival, divides India

The debate on whether India should maintain the ban on a bull-taming sporting event is far from reaching a conclusion. SEE ALSO: Why India is debating over a ban on the ancient bull-taming sport of Jallikattu Called Jallikattu, the bull-taming sport is played during the harvest festival of Pongal. The event, which has been practised for thousands of years, was outlawed by the country’s Supreme Court in 2014, a decision it maintained in 2016. But many have expressed their disapproval of the decision. O Panneerselvam, the chief minister of the southern India state of Tamil Nadu where the sport is played, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to consider revoking the ban on Jallikattu.

[h=3]Scientists may have discovered the 'missing element' deep inside Earth's core[/h]It's generally well known that the innermost part of Earth is made mostly of iron (about 85%). Nickel accounts for about 10%. That last 5% however, has remained a bit of a mystery. A Japanese research team has been searching for that missing element for decades, and now believes that the final 5% is most likely made from silicon, reports the BBC. They presented their results at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco. The Earth's core, which lies about 3,000 km (roughly 1,800 miles) below the surface, is thought to have a radius of about 1,200 km. Since it's so deep, it's impossible to directly test it, and find out precisely what the core is made of. (For comparison,

[h=3]Grandparents take in 3 grandkids abandoned after parents' sudden death[/h]A Florida couple was found dead near their car on Dec. 31, with their three disabled children in the vehicle. On Saturday, the children were put in custody of their maternal grandparents. According to News 6, autopsies on Daniel Kelsey, 32, and Heather Kelsey, 30, were inconclusive and there were no signs of trauma. Troopers on the scene saw no obvious signs of foul play. One parent tested positive for the presence of drugs, but deputies said it was too early to reveal which parent it was or what kind of drug may have been involved. Police reportedly found the couple’s children in the backseat of the car unaware that their parents had died. “They really don’t know,” Mike Belisle, Heather’s father,

[h=3]Want a Lifetime of Better Brain Function? Science Says Change This One Habit (It's Not What You Think)[/h]We all want brains that function at their best, today, tomorrow, and--we hope--for the rest of our lives. What can we do to make that happen? To try and answer that question, scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital studied 17 "superagers," people over 65 who have the mental function of those in their 20s. The goal was to find out if there were any observable differences between superager brains and normal brains, and if so, whether the rest of us could use that information to give ourselves better brain function through the years. The answers are yes, and yes. Superager brains were thick in places where the control groups' were thin. But they weren't, as you might guess, the areas related

[h=3]This murderous gang has gone global and has 100K members[/h]Cruel, merciless and passionately violent, the Mara Salvatrucha is one of the world’s most vicious gang and it is spreading internationally. Also called MS-13, the gang is known for its barbaric fighting, contract killing, drug trafficking, gang rape, people smuggling and desire to be known as number one for most murders. The gang’s members are recognizable by the extensive and symbolic tattoos covering their faces and torsos, although newer members are eschewing the markings because they make them more easily identifiable to police. Gang members use hand signals such as the symbol for a devil’s horn to greet each other, and initiation to become a full gang member involves being kicked and beaten.

11 Majorly Inspiring Quotes from Our Country's First Ladies

Now that Inauguration Day is around the corner, our country will not only gain a new President, but also a new First Lady. And if history has taught us anything, the First Lady has an equally vital role in the White House. In recent decades, First Ladies have used their influence to champion causes like reducing drug use, increasing breast cancer awareness, or stamping out illiteracy. But First Ladies agitating for social change wasn’t always the case. During the early 19 th century, First Ladies were expected to be docile, ready to entertain guests and be a good wife. In turn, the main role of a First Lady during this time was to serve as a hostess for private functions and other public social gatherings at the White House. It wasn't until the mid 19 th century that the First Lady’s duties extended towards political activism, and much later, towards advocating for social issues they believed in. Even more, with the rise of household televisions in the 1960s during the Kennedy era, First Ladies were thrust into the limelight - making them more subject to public scrutiny. We're all curious to know what kind of White House will Melania Trump help create and what causes will she champion in 2017. Before we find out, let's take a look back at a few notable former First Ladies and their memorable words of wisdom. Melania, we hope you are taking note. Collision of two galaxies... must truly be mind blowing indeed!!!

[h=3]Galaxies collide in stunning picture[/h]This stunning photograph released by NASA has quite the story to tell about worlds colliding in galaxies far, far away. Named IRAS 14348-1447 (partially for its discoverer, the Infrared Astronomical Satellite), the bright, smudge-like object in the photo is actually a combination of two gas-rich spiral galaxies that got too close to one another. Gravitational pull eventually caused the galaxies to merge into and destroy one another, according to NASA. IRAS 14348-1447 is located over a billion light-years away from Earth and NASA wrote that almost 95 percent of the energy it emits is far-infrared. “It is one fo the most gas-rich examples known of an ultraluminous infrared galaxy, a class of cosmic

[h=3]Can a tarantula eat a snake? Scientists impressed by spider[/h]Tarantulas usually satisfy this by chowing down on other bugs, though large arachnids are also known to nibble on lizards and rodents. Researchers in Brazil made a grisly but fascinating discovery when they found a large female tarantula in the process of eating a snake. Here's the epic description of the death scene from a paper on the find: "The snake (snout-vent length 390.60 mm) was found dead, with severe damage to the anterior and middle regions of its body. The title of the paper, published in December in the journal Herpetology Notes, really gets to the point: "Predation of the snake Erythrolamprus almadensis by the tarantula Grammostola quirogai." Live Science brought this riveting discovery into the public eye.

How People Upgrade Their Kitchens and How Much They Spend

The kitchen is the most popular room of the home to renovate, according to Houzz research, and those who choose to remodel the heart of their home have some definite preferences. After all, the No. 1 reason they choose to renovate this area is no longer being able to stand the old kitchen - can anyone out there relate? The 2017 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, from a research team led by Nino Sitchinava, Houzz’s principal economist, reveals that homeowners updating their kitchens prioritize changing out countertops, backsplashes and sinks. A majority of kitchen renovators are also choosing a more open feel for this room. The study surveyed more than 2,700 Houzz users in the U.S. who own homes

India's Cash Ban Could Boost Modi's Election Chances

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s disruptive cash ban is unlikely to damage his party’s performance in upcoming state polls. In fact, it might even help. Modi’s move to invalidate 86 percent of circulated currency in Asia’s third-largest economy forced millions of Indians into lengthy bank queues. It has also dented India’s world-beating growth as the country’s cash-dependent economy stalled. But even with millions enduring serious hardship, numerous polls and political analysts indicate Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party will perform well in upcoming state elections, suggesting Modi could win a second term in the 2019 national poll. With less than a month to go before the elections, Modi’s surprise

Cows as big as elephants may soon roam Europe

Standing nearly as tall as an elephant, the auroch grazed for 250,000 years until its extinction in 1627. But its story may not end there: Scientists are close to resurrecting the "supercow," once the largest land mammal in Europe, reports CNN. In search of herbivores to maintain land areas at risk of becoming barren, geneticists began breeding auroch descendants with similar cattle breeds in 2008 and found they could "produce animals far closer to the auroch than we would have expected," says Ronald Goderie of the Tauros Project. Experts predicted a "near 100% substitute" in seven generations, around 2025. But fourth-generation beasts have already been introduced in Croatia, Spain, Portugal,
