[h=3]Do Cakes Need to Be Refrigerated?[/h]It’s known that produce will spoil at a faster rate at room temperature than in a cooler environment. But what about homemade goodies, like a cake? A simple snack cake (like these Whole-Grain Pecan Blondies) or a quick bread (like our Banana-Chocolate-Walnut Bread) doesn’t require refrigeration and will last 4 to 5 days at room temperature. If these types of cakes are stored at room temperature and the room happens to be warm, the icing will get too soft and the layers will slip and slide around or the icing will melt and droop down the sides of the cake.

[h=3]15 mesmerizing photos capture Kashmir's first snowfall of the season[/h]Northern India has witnessed heavy snowfall in the last few days. The Kashmir Valley is the worst hit as incessant snow has hit rail, road and air connectivity and cut the region off from the rest of the country. SEE ALSO: India’s Himalayan forest fires reach 113-year-old heritage train track But snow has its own charm and life around it takes on a different character. Here's a snapshot of life in Kashmir right now and it includes tourists reveling in the snow, boatmen rowing through frozen lakes, shepherds walking cattle in the mist, and much more. While snow might have halted life in many ways, it continues to be a visual treat. BONUS: Tian Tian the panda is having a flipping good time in

Mom, boyfriend plotted a ‘rape-murder fantasy’ that left her teen daughter dead, prosecutor says

Grace Packer became a foster child at age 3. At age 14, she suffered a slow and painful death - raped, drugged and left to die in a sweltering attic, court records say. When those actions didn’t result in her death, prosecutors say she was strangled. Then her body was packed in cat litter and left in the same attic for months. Police would later find her dismembered remains in rural Pennsylvania. Officials say her gruesome death was carried out by a 41-year-old woman she had known as her mother, who adopted the teenager and her younger brother, and the mother’s boyfriend. Sara Packer and Jacob Sullivan were charged Sunday with several crimes, including homicide, kidnapping, endangering the welfare

Transgender model to feature in India fashion show for first time

"It wasn't easy for me in the early days when there was so much rejection and discrimination" MUMBAI, Jan 9 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A transgender model will walk the ramp at one of India's premier fashion events next month for the first time, a sign of greater acceptance of a community that is ostracised despite recent laws ensuring their protection and more opportunities. Anjali Lama, who is from Nepal, first auditioned for the Lakmé Fashion Week last year but was rejected, she said. She will model for several leading designers at the show running from Feb. 1 to Feb. 5 in Mumbai. "It wasn't easy for me in the early days when there was so much rejection and discrimination," Lama, 32, told

An asteroid just flew by Earth nearly 2 times closer than the moon - and we barely saw it coming

Early Monday morning, while the US East Coast was pouring coffee, dropping kids off at school, and cursing in traffic, a space rock as big as a 10-story building slipped past Earth. The asteroid, dubbed 2017 AG13, was discovered only Saturday by the University of Arizona's Catalina Sky Survey, according to an email from Slooh, a company that broadcasts live views of space. It's between 50 and 111 feet (15 to 34 meters) long and, when it swung by Earth, 2017 AG3 was moving at 9.9 miles per second (16 kilometers per second). The near-Earth object, or NEO, came within about half the distance that the moon is from Earth, according to Slooh. "This is moving very quickly, very nearby to us," Eric Feldman,

[h=3]How the tables are turning on Obamacare[/h]Republicans sought to paint the Democrats' passing Obamacare without GOP support as extreme. Democrats are happy to return the favor. Making the difficult task of enacting healthcare reform a millstone for Republicans could end up helping Democrats in the 2018 midterm elections Former Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, a Republican, said an overhaul of Obamacare would only have "long-term viability" if the GOP can win support from Democratic lawmakers. "The GOP has indicated publicly that they intend not to make the same mistake that the Democrats did in passing a bill that was not supported in a bipartisan way," Leavitt said. "I think that's wise." But Democratic votes won't be

[h=3]Woman accused of stabbing her toddler believed her son ‘was the soul of Hitler,’ cellmate says[/h]When Egypt Robinson’s son was found dead, the 3-year-old boy’s body was inside a suitcase that had been left in a swamp at the back of a Florida house. Prosecutors say Robinson stabbed her son the day after Christmas in 2015, then wrapped his body in a sheet and laid him on his back inside the suitcase. Last month, investigators learned from Robinson’s former cellmate why she allegedly killed her son in her home in Panama City roughly one year earlier. “She did it because he said he was the soul of Hitler,” Tiffany Powell, an inmate who was once Robinson’s cellmate at the jail in Bay County, told detectives. Robinson’s son shared the same birthday as Adolf Hitler and said that he would grow up

[h=3]The Milky Way's black hole is hurling giant 'spitballs'[/h]CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- The black hole at the center of the Milky Way is chewing up stars like pieces of paper and launching planet-sized "spitballs" into the galaxy. Almost all black holes, given enough surrounding material, will happen upon a star drifting too close to its intense gravitational pull. The star is pulled in toward the black hole and shredded by its accretion disk. But new research suggests the stellar debris can reform into planet-like orbs. The orbs become planet-sized spitballs, as they're launched back out by the spin of the accretion disk. "A single shredded star can form hundreds of these planet-mass objects. We wondered: Where do they end up? How close do they

[h=3]A new theory challenges everything astronomers thought they knew about how the Moon was created[/h]Currently, the leading theory of the creation of the Moon is that it formed from a giant impact between a very early Earth and another Mars-sized planet. Yet new research from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel has put forward a theory that the Moon may have actually formed from a series of large impacts, rather than just one. The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, explains why the Moon appears to be made mostly from Earth-like materials, rather than a mixture of our elements and those of another mystery planet. Lead author Dr Raluca Rufu and her colleagues conducted some mathematical simulations of what it would look like if large planetary bodies collided with our

[h=3]1,000-Year-Old Iconic California Tree Topples During Weekend Storms[/h]The Pioneer Cabin Tree, estimated to be more than 1,000 years old, toppled from its historic height in Calaveras Big Trees State Park in Calaveras County, California, over the weekend. In photos captured on Sunday, the “drive-through” massive sequoia tree could not endure the flooding caused by rainstorms throughout the weekend. Jim Allday, who is a volunteer at the park and took the photos, told the San Francisco Gate that the tree fell around 2 p.m. and “shattered” when it hit the ground.
