Astronomers just found a piping hot ‘Super Earth’

It wasn't that long ago that finding exoplanets - that is, worlds that exist outside of our own solar system - was a rare occurrence. Those days are gone, however, and we now know that there are actually plenty of stars that host one or more planets. With that increased awareness, researchers have been making huge leaps in exoplanet discovery, and a group of astronomers from around the world just announced that they've detected not one, not two, but 60 new planets orbiting nearby stars. One of those planets is of particular interest, as it's a lot like Earth, only hotter. The planet has the decidedly unsexy name Gliese 411b - Gliese 411 being the name of the star it orbits, and "b" being the unique label for the world itself - but what it lacks in a cool moniker it makes up for with a fiery personality. Gliese 411b has been labeled a "Super Earth," which means that it's a rocky planet much like our own. However, it's much larger than Earth, and it's also a whole lot hotter. In fact, the planet is thought to be too hot to support any kind of life on its surface, according to Dr. Mikko Tuomi of the University of Hertfordshire's Centre for Astrophysics, who helped lead the research effort. Gliese 411 and its orbiting planets are just eight light years from Earth, putting them right in our celestial backyard, but despite is relative proximity to our own planet, the star is still about six trillion miles away, so it's unlikely we'll be stopping by any time soon.

‘Firefall’ lights up Yosemite National Park

Shutterbugs are descending upon Yosemite National Park this week to capture a natural phenomenon known as a firefall. For two weeks in February each year, the sun strikes Horsetail Fall at exactly the right angle to make the waterfall glow like a river of fire. The sight is especially rare since Horsetail Fall only flows after enough rain and snow has fallen, which storms in the area this past month seem to have guaranteed. It’s also only visible for a few minutes after sunset every day, but that hasn’t stopped photographers from showing up hours early to reserve the best viewing spots.

Unearthed essay on unearthly aliens by an unexpected politician scientist!!! :)

[h=3]Unearthed essay on alien life reveals Churchill the scientist[/h]By Ben Hirschler LONDON (Reuters) - A newly unearthed essay by Winston Churchill shows Britain's wartime leader was uncannily prescient about the possibility of alien life on planets orbiting stars other than the Sun. The 11-page article was drafted on the eve of World War Two in 1939 and updated in the 1950s, decades before astronomers discovered the first extrasolar planets in the 1990s. The hunt for life on other worlds has taken off in the last 20 years as observations have suggested the Milky Way alone may contain more than a billion Earth-size planets that could be habitable. Churchill was already thinking along similar lines nearly 80 years ago, writing that "with hundreds of thousands of nebulae, each containing thousands of millions of suns, the odds are enormous that there must be immense numbers which possess planets whose circumstances would not render life impossible".

[h=3]34 crore children to be dewormed on Third National Deworming Day[/h]New Delhi [India], Feb. 15 (ANI-BusinessWire India): In order to combat the public health threat of intestinal worm infections in children aged 1-19, the Government of India is observing the third annual National Deworming Day on February 10, 2017. A mop-up day will be held on February 15, 2017, to deworm any child who could not be dewormed on National Deworming Day. Last year, around 30 crore children were dewormed within in a span of six months.

[h=3]Sasikala vs OPS: Forget the North-South divide, Paneer jokes are not healthy[/h]An Assamese surname translates to a Hindi profanity. And for years, students from the north-eastern state, studying or working in Delhi, have been subject to ridicule, and even abuse, over this. So imagine the horrors an Assamese student faces when he arrives in Delhi with a surname Chutiya. The surname, however, is just one small part of the racism that northeasterners face in north India. But then, this write-up is not about Assam or the northeast. But there is a connection. The present story is essentially from that part of India beyond the Vindhyas and collectively — often derisively — referred to as South India. All the people in that part are South Indians. Many prefer the word Madrasis,

Sasikala who is going to jail on Wednesday is the general secretary. She named her sister’s son TTV Dinakaran as deputy general secretary. Dinakaran has two brothers, Bhaskaran and Sudhakaran. They are from Theni district. Sudhakaran is Jayalalithaa’s foster son, but she disowned him publicly. Bhaskaran served as the managing director of JJ TV, which folded up before the launch of Jaya TV, the AIADMK's official channel. After Jayalalithaa’s death, Dinakaran shifted to Poes Garden, along with his aunt Sasikala. Dinakaran was seen standing behind Sasikala when Jayalalithaa’s body was

  • Sasikala Convicted: MLA, who escaped Golden Bay resort, files kidnapping charge against Sasikala, Palanisamy

  • Sasikala Natarajan, who was convicted by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case, now faces a kidnapping charge. The current AIADMK Legislature Party leader, Edappadi Palanisamy, is also a co-accused in the case. MLA SS Saravanan filed an FIR with the Koovathur Police against Sasikala and Palanisamy accusing them of kidnapping the AIADMK MLAs after having had a dramatic escape from the Golden Bay Resort where the MLAs backing Sasikala were lodged for a week.

  • Syrian films bring tears and smiles to Berlin Film Festival

"Insyriated" and "The Other Side of Hope" are two films about Syria, and they brought tears and smiles to the Berlin Film Festival. The former is shot almost entirely inside the walls of an apartment that becomes like a prison for Oum Yazan, a mother determined to survive a war whose brutality is conveyed mostly through the sounds of bombs and sniper gunfire. Belgian director Philippe Van Leeuw said the silence that followed the screening as well as seeing some of his actors and members of the audience in tears at the end made him think: "Mission accomplished." "It is hard for me to say I was happy when I saw the film for the first time with the audience," said actress Hiam Abbass, who plays Oum Yazan.

  • How Sasikala and ‘Mannargudi mafia’ strengthened clout in Tamil Nadu power play

  • There is a huge sense of relief in Tamil Nadu with the conviction of AIADMK general secretary VK Sasikala, who was described as “female don” by a senior Congress leader EVKS Elangovan. And he may not be far from the truth as Sasikala and her family’s presence is felt in every sphere of life in the state — most significantly in political and bureaucratic circles due to the raw power she wielded because of her proximity to late chief minister J Jayalalithaa. Which is why she emerged as Chinnamma, successor to Amma, and was about to become the chief minister of the state when the SC verdict tripped her. Hailing from Thiruthuraipoondi, Sasikala’s parents had shifted to a nearby small town in Mannargudi

[h=3]Apex court verdict vindicates TN governor: BJP[/h]After the Supreme Court convicted AIADMK leader V K Sasikala in a corruption case on Tuesday, BJP leaders hailed Tamil Nadu Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s “wait and watch” policy and the Centre’s hands-off approach to the political crisis in the southern state. Governor Rao’s move “vindicated” his position, they contended. Union government sources said Governor Rao avoided rushing for a floor test to give the warring factions of the AIADMK, led by Sasikala and caretaker Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, a chance to form the government after he consulted legal luminaries. His decision to wait for the Supreme Court verdict in the disproportionate assets case against Sasikala and two others pronounced

Need we bring back these giants from extinction???

  • After 4,000 years of extinction, the woolly mammoth could soon walk the earth again, as scientists reveal the huge beast could be resurrected within two years. Scientists believe they will have the technology to create an elephant and mammoth hybrid embryo through groundbreaking genetic engineering, by programming mammoth genes into an Asian elephant. In comments ahead of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting in Boston (16 to 20 February) experts discussed the so-called "de-extinction" effort. "Our aim is to produce a hybrid elephant-mammoth embryo," said Prof George Church according to the Guardian newspaper. "Actually, it would be more like an elephant

So Zealandia got divided into two - the surviving New Zealand and the sunken (old) Zealandia!!!

[h=3]N. Zealand part of sunken 'lost continent': scientists[/h]New Zealand sits atop a previously unknown continent -- mostly submerged beneath the South Pacific -- that should be recognised with the name Zealandia, scientists said Friday. Researchers said Zealandia was a distinct geological entity and met all the criteria applied to Earth's seven other continents -- elevation above the surrounding area, distinctive geology, a well-defined area and a crust much thicker than that found on the ocean floor. In a paper published in the Geological Society of America's Journal, GSA Today, they said Zealandia measured five million square kilometre (1.9 million square miles) and was 94 percent underwater.

Video of deadly spider killing snake will haunt you

The redback spider is among the world's most venomous spiders. It looks like a black widow on steroids, basically. The Eastern brown snake is the world's No. 2 most venomous snake, capable of killing a full-grown human. These two monsters faced off in some warehouse in Australia, and it was seriously terrifying. The snake appeared to get trapped as the redback spider went for the attack. It stood no chance despite the much larger body and deadlier bite. The spider won. But really, how did these people just stand to the side as this was going on? How can they ever show up to work again at that building knowing that deadly snakes and spiders can show up at any moment? All of that is horrifying.

4th most deadly Spider goes after the 2nd most deadly Snake....

Become part of History by discovering the planet lurking in our Solar system! :peep:

Scientists need your help to find the mysterious planet they suspect is lurking in our solar system

Calling all space fans: Astronomers want you to help them hunt for a large planet that might be lurking on the outskirts of our solar system. Scientists working with a number of institutions have created a website filled with data that will allow people to hunt for previously undiscovered objects circling the sun from beyond Neptune's orbit. SEE ALSO: Scientists want you to help them find planets in this database of stars The website, called Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, asks people to look through flipbooks of images to try to find "failed stars," known as brown dwarfs, or even the elusive "Planet 9" - a theoretical planet thought to circle the sun from the reaches of the solar system. Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 should help add to the automated searches for these objects already underway. “Automated searches don’t work well in some regions of the sky, like the plane of the Milky Way galaxy, because there are too many stars, which confuses the search algorithm,” Berkeley scientist Aaron Meisner said in a statement. “Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 has the potential to unlock once-in-a-century discoveries, and it’s exciting to think they could be spotted first by a citizen scientist,” Meisner added. The new website uses processed data from NASA's WISE telescope to allow citizen scientists to see even the dimmest objects moving out there in the solar system. A diagram of where Planet 9 might be. Image: CALTECH/R. HURT (IPAC) For decades, scientists have wondered if there might be some kind of large object orbiting the sun past Pluto. Last year, however, astronomers Mike Brown and Konstantin Batygin found indirect evidence that actually suggests this world exists. Brown and Batygin thinks the Neptune-sized world probably completes a full circuit of the sun every 15,000 years. The team of Caltech scientists think they have compelling evidence for the existence of the world because about six objects they studied in the Kuiper Belt - the icy mass of objects in Pluto's part of space - all seem to have orbits perturbed in the same way. "It's almost like having six hands on a clock all moving at different rates, and when you happen to look up, they're all in exactly the same place," Brown said in a statement in January 2016. "Basically it shouldn't happen randomly. So we thought something else must be shaping these orbits." Whether the planet is found or not, Backyard Worlds should help speed up the process in some way. The website will also help citizen scientists find any brown dwarfs that might be relatively close our sun. These "failed stars" are basically objects that are too big to be considered planets, but too small to be stars. “Brown dwarfs form like stars but evolve like planets, and the coldest ones are much like Jupiter,” team member Jackie Faherty, said in a statement. “By using Backyard Worlds: Planet 9, the public can help us discover more of these strange rogue worlds.” BONUS: Could massive solar 'superflares' help us find life on other planets?
