This is an interesting study of doing a functional MRI on the brains of Jazz and Rap musicians who tend to improvise. I wonder whether a similar study on Carnatic Musicians will show a frontal lobe activity!

First few sentences from the following URL

"Some rappers have an impressive ability to make up lyrics on the fly, in a style known as freestyle rap. These performers have a lot in common with jazz musicians, it turns out.
Scientists have found artists in both genres are using their brains in similar ways when they improvise.
A group of jazz pianists had their heads examined in a 2008 PLOS One study, which subjected the musicians to functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. These scans highlight areas of brain activity."

Sikkil Gurucharan's rendition of Sri Dikshitar's "nIlayAdAkshi" in nIlAmbhari

amba neelayadakshi dikshitar neelambari - YouTube

If you want to know how I found the singer is Gurucharan (Sherlock Holmesian spy work ! :) ), please move the mouse over after this sentence.

Please look at the page source and look for meta tags - This was what I found (a trick I learned from the net elders - should pass it along to others)
meta name = "keywords" content = "diksitar, muthuswamy, chidanandanatha, neelambari, sikkil gurucharan, neelayadakshi"
