Unknowingly ate Fish

Hi All,

Yesterday evening at a company event after getting a promotion, unknowingly ate fish. I was so happy, then this happened and my coworker stopped said it fish.i feel so guilty now.
What can be done now. I could not even type properly as i followed strict vegetarian diet for last 28 years.
Kindly help
It was not intentional.
Dont worry.
Just be more careful next time.

It all depends on what is causing the guilt. Family and I are vegetarians too.

If your vegetarianism is coming from how you were raised and is part of your identity then consuming fish accidentally ( like anchovies in a pizza that happened to friend I know ) may be connected with papa and punya etc. Only your family can suggest parihara and tell you to not worry about this. Be more alert in the future.

If vegetarianism is not connected to just how you were raised but supported by principle of ahimsa then there can be a discussion

One principle is principle of ahimsa. You will discover that it is very nuanced. Once someone pointed out that I was using leather belts. I had never thought the fact that animals are killed for that. I thought naively that leather is taken from already dead animals that died out of natural causes.

I gave up leather goods after finding out. I had some gifted silk Veshti. There are strange ideas about madi etc. Gave away silk Veshti. In temples they use silk.

Many feel elite as vegetarian but display their silk collections at weddings etc.

One can cause verbal violence but claim to be a vegetarian. There may be hatred in the heart to people that are different such as gays, transgender , caste creed and what not. All of these are expressions of mental violence.

So a suggestion is to use this episode as learning opportunities about Ahimsa. Medicines and all kinds of products we use are results of animal suffering. We can help minimize and not eliminate.

Sri Rama of Valmiki was a non vegetarian. Swami Vivekananda ate fish. But only out of lack of options. During Sri Rama time the idea of vegetarianism did not exist for most people. There were no castes but people classified only in work they do. As a ruling class warrior meat eating was permitted in the society.

I have taken NV pizza but without knowing. Once I knew I stopped taking it. Nothing wrong with your situation. I think there is no need to be guilty.

There are two things that try to control us. Body and mind. Body can be subject to external influences and so external reality can indirectly control us. It is a fight between external influences and mind. If the mind is strong and prevails it can also make the body strong. Conscience will also emerge. The best thing to be doing is listening to conscience which actually spontaneously will happen when it emerges.

Confession of sin:
The Mahabharata
Anusasana Parva, Section CLXII
Translated by Sri Kisari Mohan Ganguli

If, having committed a sin, one seeks to have it covered by righteousness, that sin becomes destroyed and leads to righteousness instead of other sins. If a quantity of water be poured upon salt, the salt immediately dissolves away. Even so, when expiation is performed, sin dissolves away. For these reasons, one should never conceal a sin. Concealed, it is certain to increase. Having committed a sin, one should confess it in the presence of those that are good. They would destroy it immediately.

This does not mean one can commit heineous crime like Killing another Human, and get atonement by confessing it.

Since you did not catch the Fish, nor you Killed and Cooked it, you ate the fish unknowingly, and now opennly Confessed it..

Please be careful from henceforth as Renuka Madam Advised.

There is no necessasity to drag Sri Rama's name in giving Advice,, Sanskrit Words can have different meanings, and one can choose according to his conclusion; Sri Rama was an Avatar, and as such, He Lived like an Avatar.

Fish was considered vegetable by Nambudiris of Kerala who termed it 'Samudra Pushpam' (Flower which blossoms in Ocean).
Even Bengali Brahmins are believed to be consuming fish.
Why feel guilty hence?

I once attended a function, a ceremony, hosted by christians.

I was offered Sandwich for breakfast. It tasted delicious.

During Lunch I moved towards Veg counter.

My christian friend queried with awe and surprise if I am Veg and I answered in the affirmative.

He was surprised and asked me 'How come then you ate NV Sandwich for breakfast'?. It was only then I knew that the sandwich I consumed for breakfast was NV.

Years have passed. I am hale and healthy. I have not passed away. My organs are healthy.

Last but not the least, God answers my prayers positively. God has not condemned me, has not punished me nor has penalized me for eating NV sandwich unawares.

Furthermore I never felt guilty at any time nor did my conscience prick me.

It is too trivial a matter to be sensitive about.

Is eating meat a sin? I was not aware sir, this long.

I humbly request you to quote from hindu scriptures if it is explicitly or implicitly written that eating meat is a sin to be confessed to be forgiven to ensure moksha.

@TOVino: Are you aware that there is a new concept and term called 'VEGAN'. Please type #Vegan in youtube and you will see a multitude of videos. There is one guy, championing the cause of Vegans.

The Vegan concept more strict than Vegetarianism.

Vegans forbid even drinking milk from animals, for that matter even by-products of milk viz butter, ghee, paneer, etc.

Vegans condemn even consuming anything made from milk or its by-products viz milk-shakes, ice-creams, coffee, tea etc.

They eat strictly Vegetables only.

They avoid even Ayurvedic medicines made by using any product or substance derived from animals.
