Greetings to allUnless the vadhyar takes 5 lakhs he will not do it correctly.. Nowadays vadhyars dont take 5 lakhs because they dont do all rituals fully.. But you have to force them to take 5 lakhs.. then they will be forced to do all rituals according to vedas.
For death, I do agree many Vadhyar does quote a lumpsome and finish things up just like that.It is a long time, I had done naandi and upanayanam. I used to perform parvana sradham for my parents. Now, due to some old age problems, I am doing only hiranyam. For this, in Thripunithura, one wadhyar used to keep jaggery, coconut, masoor dhal etc apart from rice and banana and 1000 each for each brahmin and 15000 to the priest. Usually, the priest doubles as one of the brahmins. So, he gets 2500. In Bangalore, no such problems. It is 800 x 3 and rice and banana only.
But i have another point on the exorbitant charges for death rites. It runs into 1.5 to 3.0 lakhs as the experience with the recent deaths of my relatives indicated. They know that we need a priest do these rituals and exploit us. For example, though i know and can do all rituals, I am hesitant to do death rituals.

I do not understand why, only when it comes to dakshinai for vadyars, we use terms like exorbitant, costly etc. We must remember a few things - inflation and cost of living applies to everyone, vadyars are not exempt. Every product or service's cost has multiplied several times over the last decade itself. Why should Sastrigal remuneration be exempt? Do they have PF, leave encashment, pension and gratuity like most of us have? Do they have medical insurance? They also have families to take care. Moreover, there is also the question of demand and supply. Vadyars, especially qualified, good vadyars are in short supply. Fewer the number of vadyars, more will be the cost of their services. It is a long time, I had done naandi and upanayanam. I used to perform parvana sradham for my parents. Mr Gopalan had given specific information to the question.I do not understand why, only when it comes to dakshinai for vadyars, we use terms like exorbitant, costly etc. We must remember a few things - inflation and cost of living applies to everyone, vadyars are not exempt. I just lost my father 6 months back. From the death day till the 13th day, I spent about 2 lacs. I thought it was worth it considering the time and resources the vadyar had to expend on me during that fortnight. Not to speak of dakshinai they have to give to co-vadyars and Danam expenses etc.
