Vegetarians live longer than meat eaters

Being vegetarian may give you more heath benefits than eating meat, suggest Loma Linda University study.
In the '70s and '80s, a series of studies from Loma Linda University in California, which has tracked tens of thousands of Seventh-day Adventists since 1958, were the first to show that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters, according to the Huffington Post.
The studies also revealed that the kinds of foods frequently consumed in vegetarian diets — fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes — can reduce a person's risk for diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes, control body mass index and waist size, and boost brain health.
In 2002, Loma Linda received a grant from the National Institutes of Health gave to continue the research on Seventh-day Adventists, branding this round of research Adventist Health Study 2.
The study, which is midway to completion and includes 96,000 people from the United States and Canada, presents findings just as dramatic, principal investigator Gary E. Fraser, MD, PhD, said at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' 2012 Food ‘n’ Nutrition Conference and Expo.
Vegetarian Adventist men live to an average of 83.3 years and vegetarian women 85.7 years — 9.5 and 6.1 years, respectively, longer than other Californians, Fraser explained.
The Adventist Health Study 2 also found that
- Vegans are, on average, 30 pounds lighter than meat eaters.
- Vegans are also five units lighter on the BMI scale than meat-eaters.
- Vegetarians and vegans are also less insulin resistant than meat-eaters.
- Lean people are also more likely to exercise regularly, eat plants, and avoid cigarettes than overweight people, suggesting that numerous factors are boosting the overall health of these participants.
- Pesco-vegetarians and semi-vegetarians who limit animal products, but still eat meat once a week or so, have "intermediate protection" against lifestyle diseases.
Perhaps the most staggering finding is that obesity cuts an African-American's life span by 6.2%.
The study population is 25% African-American and half vegetarian

I would like to take this forward by inviting posts on healthy vegetarian food...May be a few among us who are calorie conscious can add meat to this.

IMHO, longevity is not related to eating veg foods or non-veg foods. Maybe the quality of life is somewhat related. W. Churchill lived long with all vices. EVR was one year older than Rajaji when he died. Post #2 suggests good contribution for healthy veg food. How to balance a veg food for optimum benefits is need of the hour. For instance going on eating a pumpkin and cluster beans might not be helpful. In Bihar or somewhere one father claimed that his boy scored extraordinarily well because he judiciously fed his son with veg good. Of course Elephant is bigger, but lion or tiger is ferocious. Maybe disciplined life can extend one's longevity. But how far for a person with congenital problems. Discussions by experts are looked forward to.

It is one's personal wish to choose veg or non veg food. But, I feel very uneasy, when people

sitting near me in the airports of the U S of A, relish the big blocks of meat they eat! :hungry:

I think longevity with ill health is the biggest curse a person can get on the earth!

This an old subject of discussions in many Forums. I agree with the views of Sri "Iyyarooraan". I am a strong supporter of Vegetarianism. But I believe that health and longevity of life of a person depends on so many factors, not just confined to food habits alone. I have known many people who live/ lived long inspite of their erratic life and very strict disciplinarians dying early as well. One basic fact I have observed is that people who face events in life with calm and peace have better chances of longevity. I feel mind plays an important part in life. Keeping oneself mentally active is as important as keeping the body physically fit.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Dear RR ji,

You know in my trip to India the person sitting next to me was flying back to his hometown Bangalore and when he saw me taking veg meals he panicked and tried to cancel his non veg meal and ask for a veg meal but being a budget airlines they did not have veg meal for him.

So I asked him "why are you cancelling your non veg meal"

He said "you are a veg you might not like me eating non veg next to you"

I told him "go ahead eat what you want I have cut up even 1 week old decomposed humans" so go ahead eat anything you want.

He was "wow you are the coolest vegetarian I have met"

I said "No problems dude"

You see RR Ji....when I attend any medical seminars very few people are veg here and we are faced with all sorts of questions from non veg doctors.

They ask dumb questions like "are you trying to stay slim..are you trying to safe money by being veg? Are you nuts? What is wrong with you?"

So many can not stand vegetarians too at times..you know worse still is going to Non Hindu houses who just do not understand the concept of being vegetarian.

They think one should not spill blood hence they tell you why don't you eat this fish and prawns cos that has no blood!LOL

You have to tell them..no no I am veg I do not eat any animal/fish kingdom members.

Then you have Chinese who for them being veg is being Vegan and sans onion and garlic but make all food that resembles non veg made from Soya products.

They will tell you "you say you are veg but why are you drinking milk?"

So list can go on and on.

So the best is let everyone eat what they like and let everyone be happy.

Many people here in London claim that many vegetarians they know (the militant PETA type) are holier than thou vegs. I personally never preach nor like being questioned about my vegetarian diet. Just like you once on a flight to Hyd from KL (air india used to do direct some years ago..) I had to sit with a Malaysian Chindian student studying medicine in b'lore or something. When they were giving out food I just reconfirmed that is it vegetarian.

When I got my food the guy asked me exactly this, I still remember the exact words " Will you die ah if u eat NV"? I was really shocked ok, being still in early teens and not even sitting with my mum and sister etc and have to face irritating questions like this! Lol. I was too taken aback with the antagonism to answer properly. I just said "Yeah something like that!"

He is sure to have noticed the expressions in the faces of people like me!! :spy:

My sister lives in china with her daughter, and as per her: "Chinese will eat anything which has two or four legs except chairs & tables and anything that flies except Aircraft."LOL

cheers

Dear Amala,

At least you are a Brahmin you have a good reason to be vegetarian.

You know what some people have asked me(fellow docs ok) "when you are not a Brahmin why the F are you a vegetarian?"

Once a chinese lady doc asked me "Do you think you can save the world if you become veg?"

Once at the dinner table one Hindu Non Veg doc put with his spoon he was eating some vegetables from a chicken dish on my plate.

He said this is vegetables in Chicken sauce only so don't make a fuss and eat it.

I got real mad with this..and asked the sponsor of the dinner to get me a new meal.

Further more he is a total stranger how can he use his spoon he has eaten with for me?

All doctors there thought I was over reacting to get a new meal ordered.

You see I respect what a person eats on his plate and he has to respect what I eat on my plate.

So it's not too easy for a Non Brahmin to be a vegetarian here..you have to answer lots and lots of questions.

Dear Renu,

I have written earlier in some thread that I had no other option than to choose Maths as my main subject.

1. I am allergic to cutting animals. So - 'no' to Zoology and Botany (the ancillary is Zoology)

2. I can not remember the formulas in Chemistry. So - 'no' to Chemistry or Physics (the ancillary is Chemistry)

3. I don't like History. So - No arts subjects including Music, because the ancillary is History.

Maths was Ok in undergrad because the ancillaries were Physics and Statistics.
Maths was Ok in PG course too because even the ancillaries were not there! :peace:

Ms. Amala,
That was a good start for being in TB site. LOL
That kind of in-your-face is only among certain people. Here in USA, among friends, once they know you are vegetarian or do not take alcohol, they respect your choice and leave you. But among Indian friends even after 30 years they will try to persuade you, may be jokingly to have a bite, or one glass of wine.

Out here one's life might get shortened if one is a vegetarian cos of answering all questions asked by people.

Sometimes it's sickening too cos people have a stereotype image in their brain on how a vegetarian should look like and behave.

Out here many think only traditional looking shy people would be vegetarian and anyone who does not fit the bill would always be questioned as why he/she is a vegetarian.

Enough times I have been told at meetings "I think you are at the wrong table..this is for vegetarians.."

I will have to reply "I am at the right table..I am a vegetarian"

I have seen matronly looking traditional types of doctors( who are my age)who are veg and no one questions them!LOL

The next time when I go for a medical meeting I am going to bring along a pic of Mallika Sherawat.
If anyone gets surprised that I am veg, I am going to show them Mallika's pic and ask them "aren't you guys surprised that she is also veg?"LOL

They must surely add 'leading a healthy life' along with these words. :blabla:

After seeing many super seniors in suffering, I wrote this:

It may be not easy for a Non Brahmin to be vegetarian there where people have pre conceived notions abotu vegetarians etc, but if you get stuck with the wrong people and say youre vegetarian because you're Brahmin and they are the anti Brahmin or anti caste militants they also can give you hell about why you are so into caste etc etc. Trust me! It can also go the other way

Shahid is Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian Man

Published: Friday, July 1, 2011, 12:05 [IST]

Actor Shahid Kapoor, who was recently seen in PETA India ad campaign 'Chicks Love a Vegetarian', has been voted Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian Man for 2011. He won the title in a poll conducted by PETA Asia Pacific website.
Shahid, who also won India's Sexiest Vegetarian contest in 2009, said that he feels nice on winning the title. “I have always supported the cause of being a vegetarian, and it's nice to be felicitated for something so close to my heart. Being voted as sexy is a matter of perception, but being vegetarian is a lifestyle change and something that comes from a sense of responsibility. I want to thank my fans for their vote and I am enjoying the sexy tag," Times of India quoted him as saying.
Meanwhile, singer Faye Wong has won the title of Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian Woman. She beat big names like Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor, actress Maggie Q, actors Gao Yuanyuan and Barbie Hsu, singer Nominjin, Taiwanese actor Blue Lan, Jane Zhang and songwriter Louis Cheung.

Dear RR ji,

Once I had a patient aged 99 years old and she had a fever too and she was scared she was going to die.
Usually I reassure my Indian patients who are anxious by telling them "don't worry you will live up to a hundred years"

But with this patient how could I tell that ? cos she was 99 years and telling her that she will live up to 100 means that she has only 1 year more to live.

So I told her dont worry nothing will happen to you!
