NAMASKARS. No doubt neither veg nor non veg plays a role on the span of life.but it certainly builds up to certain extent the individuals habit and senses.as indicated lion is more ferocious than elephant is an example.elephant is relatively calm. Shooting up BP can be genera lly avoided by being calm.ones food can speak of the individual. food can also classified as SAATHVEEKAM,RAJAS as well as THAMAS. accodingly they build up the GUNAS. Sowbagyavathy Lalitha Kumar, Greetings. ( i hope I got that right)

In my opinion, food habits have nothing to do with the attitude and behaviour of a person. The world has seen pure evil persons who were vegetarians ( I mean Hitler and Himmeler; not anyone here) .... I know very kind hearted non-vegetarians. So, personally I am not convinced food habits cause any of the actions.

Cheers!

Dear Lalitha ji,

To a certain extent I beg to differ cos being a vegetarian is just a lifestyle preference most of the while..very few people are actually veg on the grounds of compassion.

Most orthodox vegetarians feel that non veg food is unclean and might pollute their bodies.

So it kind of beats around the Yajnavalkya Maitreyi type of conversation once again where the saying goes "Not for the sake of the husband that he is dear and loved but for the sake of Self"
Yajnavalkya went on to describe various other examples.

So same way here..I am no Yajnavalkya or Maitreyi but I would like to add this "It is not for the sake of the animal that one becomes vegetarian but for the sake of Self"

Even the most compassionate person verily becomes veg purely for one's own self satisfaction.

I have personally met and know lots of non veg persons who are really nice and kind individuals.

My brothers are non veg and I am pure veg(do not wear silk and leather too) but personally I feel my brothers are much better than me in a lot of ways.

Dear Lalithakumar
We cannot generalise people like that. I came across lot of satvic people who ate and still eating non-vegetarian food.

Who is sattvika, Wiki explains

sāttvika individuals always work for the welfare of the world. They are hardworking, alert, generous. They live life moderately, and have good memory and concentration. Sattvic qualities include leading a chaste life, eating moderately, using precise language and speaking truths palatably. A sattvic individual speaks compliments and avoids vulgar or insulting language, is never jealous, and is unaffected by greed and selfishness. Such an individual is confident and experiences abundance. It is not in the nature of a sattvic individual to cheat or mislead others. A sattvic person will show what is and describe destinations, but then allow others to choose for themselves. A sattvic person does not allow evil tendencies to enter his or her mind but supports an inner paradise that broadcasts out to the world; he or she will have keen interest in improving spiritual knowledge and will spend time worshiping divinity or meditating and, in an extreme state, may even perform penance or uninterrupted meditation. A sattvic individual can be recognized if their mind, speech and actions synchronize: manasa, vacha, karmana are the three Sanskrit words used to describe such a state.

Kind Regards
Amirtha

If the non veg eaters see how the animals and birds are slaughtered, then I am sure many

of them will become pure vegetarians.

Two of my nephews became vegans, after seeing a video about the torture of dairy cows! :whip:

Dear RR ji,

Believe me..not everyone will change.

I wrote before in Forum that even though I have done many postmortems I still fainted at a temple out here once when I witnessed slaughtering of goats.

When my brother revived me and I got up, a small child told me "Akka you are blocking my view I can't see them slaughtering the goats"

Hearing that I almost fainted again!

So only those who have compassion will change if they see this..not everyone will.

Some people even say that "yes it's pitiful to see animals being kllled but at least we should respect the animal for giving up it's life for us..so we should eat it"

So those who have the desire to eat non veg will still eat it.

I am not saying they are wrong but it is just an individual preference.

Normally people bless everyone by saying, 'May you live for 100 years'!
They must surely add 'leading a healthy life' along with these words. :blabla:
After seeing many super seniors in suffering, I wrote this:

வரமா? சாபமா?
Dear Mrs. Raji Ram,

True words,
But, If one is blessed to lead 100 years of life as per Rg Veda it certainly is a

Dear Sir,

The hundred long years is worth living, if good health, wealth and happiness are enjoyed!

I have seen a few people who have been extending great help to everyone around them,

suffer a lot during their old age! I have written about it also.

முதலாவதும், இரண்டாவதும்…

முதலாம் குழந்தைப் பருவம் மிகவும் இனியதே;
பெறலாம் ஈன்றோரின் அரவணைப்பை இனிதே!

இரண்டாம் குழந்தைப் பருவமோ மிகக் கொடியதே;

என்னவெல்லாம் முன் ஜன்மத்தில் செய்தோமென அறியோம்;

Regards,
Raji Ram

Believe me one elderly lady told me this when she found out I am a vegetarian.I had gone to her house for lunch and she seemed to feel a bit uneasy that I was a vegetarian.
She had both veg and non veg food for the guest.

She said that she can feel the goat which is mutton now in the pot calling out to her to eat it.
She said we must respect the act of sacrifice done by the goat!
I don't know why she was trying to imply I was not respecting the goat!LOL

I told her "if you want to eat mutton just go ahead....it is purely up to you to decide your diet. No one is saying you are right or wrong...but so far I have not seen any goat take a microphone and go on stage calling out Periyorgale,Thaimargale..I am going to give up my life for you and all of you enjoy the biryani!"

She did not say anything after that and quietly ate her food.

During Navaratri out here many people become veg for 10 days and they turn up to my clinic with giddiness and feeling faint.
They say being veg makes them weak.

I find no medical basis for this but I guess may be suppressing desires lowers the energy levels.

I wonder thats what was meant by Suraju Sir when he said "sattva gunas" and raw materials? Cos it seems some people have it in them to be non violent, vegetarian etc (please not I'm not claiming vegetarians are always nonviolent!) while others have to have their daily quota of meat...hmm...something to think about surely

The world has seen pure evil persons who were vegetarians ( I mean Hitler and Himmeler; not anyone here)

This rekindled my memory of watching a documentary of Himmler. In that documentary Himmler was carrying baghavat geetha under his arms. His room was full of Hindu deities’ pictures which were hanging on the wall. Actually it reminded me of my home in India. So the relevancy here you might be wondering, anybody can read anything but how you interpret it and carry on in our life is more important than what we read. I remembered when my father warned me when I told him I was going to read Geetha. He told me it could be interpreted anyway I wanted. (My father was a Sanskrit sironmani studied from Tirupathi ). I understood what he meant when I saw that documentary long time ago.

Himmler, responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews as architect of the Holocaust, was a highly complex and fascinating man. He was also obsessed with India and Hinduism.
International Business Times spoke with an expert on German history to explore Himmler and Hinduism.

I thought they will become more active by eating 'chundal' every evening!!

Veg food has many ingradients which have medicinal value, besides providing nourishment. It is more balanced. We use hing
(perungayam ), milaku, jeeragam, ginger, kothamalli etc., They contain all the vitamins, minerals and provide you with
something extra. Pirandai and pudina thogial gives you appetite and also enables good digestion. Hing removes acidity.
The list goes on. Thats why vegetarians live longer and are healthier. Bernard Shaw was a vegetarian.

BGita has devoted one whole chapter for this topic. It is worth reading.

NAMASKARS. I am SRI v.lalithakumar. the opinion is general.for every rule/order there is an exemption.it is generally believed that the cat eats its own one of the cub after the delivery.but the same cat takes its all its other cub by its own mouth for their safety.relatively the vegetarian food is SAATHVEGAM rather than NV but for all other factors remains the same. "SARVA ROOPAMAYEE DEVI SARVAM DEVI MAYAM JAGATH.ATHOOHAM THAM VISHVAROOPAM. NAMAMI PARAMESHVAREEM." NAMASKARS v.lalithakumar

When we look at some of the names of famous personalities like Adolf Hitler and Himmler who are Vegetarians the words of Holy Bible seems to be correct.
"Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.
"
Matthew 15:11 Holy Bible.

As reading Gita does not make one a human being, so does Vegetarian food not ensure you live moral life. The American Celebrity, Pamela Anderson, who visited India 2 years ago is a strict vegetarian and is popular for her campaign against cruelty to animals. She is a Porn Star who makes a living by exposing her nudity and equally popular for her immoral life.

I think eating vegetarian food alone will not shape one's character. But along with sattvic food must be mixed good thoughts and deeds. Mind also plays a part in this.
As far as energy is concerned, the elephant which eats grass is of full of strength.
I think more thought needs to go into this.

When we talked about Vegetarian food, we do include Onion & Garlic...These are Tamasik food..Some hore core vegetarians desist from this..However medically they have excellent properties..Both Garlic & Onion increase the good cholestrol (HDL) and reduce bad cholestrol (LDL)...Also onion is a good anti oxidant & reduces risk of various types of cancer

In my village both onion & garlic are normally taboo by my grandparents, but was allowed only on one day in a month...The raw garlic (not crushed) was used for making rasam & the small onion (madrasi onion) used for making sambhar..They used to say that the body system gets cleansed, heals the body & helps to fight infection

But now with the well advertised benefits of Onion & garlic the usage in our vegetarian kitchen has increased.

According to Karma theory or if you attribute the theory to life at every stage well-being or ill-being, experiences or that are related by others, tell every stage is independent of the other except for the continuity of life. Some suffer in childhood, some in adolescence, some in wedded life, some in retirement and others in renunciation stage. When you suffer hardship at a young age, would anybody think of terminating that life. The same way it should be for old people. How old people suffer mentally is hard to understand but the onlooker suffers too, perhaps more. It is our choice to do maximum penance now or to carry forward. The wisest men accept life as it is. It is like praying to God for more trouble if we do not accept life as it is. It does not mean sitting idle, but doing best always without infringing the boundaries.

if one saw documentaries on slaughtering houses and animal husbandary even a hardcore nv will change to v if he has a little bit of empathy.

rearing those animals also take a heavy toll in global warming and deforestation .

vegetarians bring less harm to the environment .

thiruvalluvar has dedicated one full adhikaram condemning non vegetarian

Very profound statement.
