Pranams,

Just would like to share my new year resolution.

We have a small garden around our house. Every day morning, when I get up, the first thing I used to do is to go out to the garden and look at the plants. It is a place of delight for me especially, early in the morning. This green garden has some beautiful flowering plants with different colours. There will be competition between Pavazha Mallai and NithyaMallai as both are in full boom generating more fragrance. I never fail to experience this lovely thing every day morning.

Off late, I am unable to pay more attention to this small garden like pruning, cleaning, regular watering, using fertilizers, pesticides, etc. My inability to attend to this particular work has resulted in my once-healthy garden giving a dull look now.

In order to pay more attention from tomorrow onwards, I have decided to get up an hour early, so that, I have an extra hour which I can very well spare for my garden to make it lovely again.

And BTW may I know what is your New Year resolution, if any?

Regards

Oh! Normally, I do not take any resolutions. But, this year I decided to 'select' kutties as my students!

I had very tough time teaching a kid, for the past few months. :becky:

Mam,

All the best.

Dear Sir,

My resolution for 2014 is to

1)Get more regular with exercise..right now I get time to exercise only some 4 times a week..so I plan to do get more exercise at least 6 x a week...need to start using my roller blades again.

2)To spend more time playing my piano...need to brush up my music..been neglecting it for a long time.

So, we have a pianist (can I say veteran pianist?) whohas better control over the keys. Nice. Keep it up Mam.

Good day

Dear Sir,

I learnt music Piano up to the 5th grade..so I can play fairly well but being out of touch for sometime..need to brush up and get back fully to it...I was remembering when I was younger I used to play and sing at the same time especially the pop songs..so this year I must get my music back into shape and want to bring the roof down by singing rock songs this time!LOL

Dear Renu,

Try to play 'Vara leela gAna lOla' song on piano. I tried it when I visited Ram's nephew in Philly.

It was excellent! :thumb: Here is the song. (I know that you know this song) :)

Vara Leela Gaana Lola - Thyagaraja Krithi

Dear RR ji,

Yes..I can play that..I always play it..since it is Western Note it sounds very nice on the piano.
I also play the other Thygaraja Kirti "Sarasa Netra"..that too is western note and sounds great on a piano.

I can also play Aarti on Piano...In fact when I was young my father used to ask to me to play Aarti on piano whenever he was doing prayers and showed Aarti.

You know in India I once tried playing the Veena even though I had never played it before but some how I managed to play Aarti on it..just very basically I managed to play a few strings.

Actually a Tamil Brahmin friend of mine was going to be viewed by a Mappillai and she was brushing up singing songs and shlokas and she did not know many shlokas so I was teaching her mantras/shlokas etc for the big day.

I was quite surprised that even professional girls are asked to recite mantras etc during bride viewing.

Doctor Mam,

Refreshing old skills is really a good thing. Let the members of your family have excited performances in the coming days-

Is it ok to have a resolution not to have a resolution?

Biswa ji,

Actually this resolution is for the 1st few days..then everything will be back to square one..but since we are getting older..its better to get something done that can keep our minds active.

Its freaking scary to see people with Dementia..believe me its scary..so as long we keep our mind and body active Dementia might not actually creep.

So to keep body active we need to exercise and also we need to look good as we age..exercise helps us keep fit.

Music/reading etc helps keep the mind active.

So by having a resolution at least we can keep some part of our body active!

Dear TBS Garu,

Most members are silent..but when any caste based debates take place then we find everyone actively participating.

For the past few days..Forum has been rather quiet cos no caste based controversy yet!LOL

Dear Balu Sir,

You must be knowing that 'Ezhu swarangaLukkuL eththanai rAgam'! So, any music could be played, if we have swara jnAnam.

But, I used to be awestruck when my uncle plays any kind of song on violin, without knowing even a single swaram of the song!!

Some are bestowed with such a talent. My son has excellent swara jnAnam and was most sought after, to write cinema songs in

'S R G M' notation, by his friends who play the keyboard!

Listen to Rajhesh Vaidhya who has unimaginable speed and precision while playing on Veena:

RAJHESH VAIDHYA - VEENA VOYAGE

[TD="align: left"]Mam,

You are right one needs swara jnanam.

My wife’s Veena which she used to play regularly is idle for the past five months. She is now with my daughter at Houston. Standing instructions given to me was to periodically clean it and play it for some time. I don’t know how to play Veena. I just used to clean the instrument sincerely once in a while and try to play with the strings as a Guitar. I love this music. Of course, one thing I used to ensure is that no one hears this ‘Madhura ganam
:)

Regards

P,S: Don't for heaven's sake ask me whether I know how to play Guitar!
