Why some opt for a change of their original Name?

Some with peculiar name like AMAVASAI, Azaghu, and many such names face harassment from their childhood because of their name only.

It seems that recent Tamil Movie ‘edhir Neechal’ which is based on a man suffering from his original name.

Many people from different walks of life opt to change their original name to succeed in their life.

This OP is just to find members’ opinion about changing one’s original and whether it will have any effect on their future life? ; or this is just a Superstition and name change will not be the reason for their success or failure in their life.

Some persons change their names for style. Many change the spelling in their names based on numerology!

But I DID feel that one guy should surely change his name - ரா. பிச்சை ( Raa. Pichchai! )

Whenever I cross his house (near Thiruvanmiyur) I used to think, 'This man should be cursing his father for

naming his son Pichchai when his name starts with Raa! :)

There is a famous US congress woman from Houston, Texas, whose last name was 'Hogg' and her parents had the temerity to name her 'Ima'. She is 'IM A Hogg'! Sad.

There is also the instances of the Black Americans naming their children with exotic sounding names. So one mother picked the name 'placenta', without understanding the meaning.

My first name was 12 letters long. I changed it to 3 letters when I became a citizen here.

I think, all human beings have the right to change their names if they want to. :)

KRS

Raji Madam

This name " Pitchai' has some thing to do with prayers.
If the parents did not have any child for many years, they they pray to God for a Child, and if after that they become parents, They treat the their child as " PITCHAI' from God.

But names like Amavasai, is really Kodumai

I know Sir! My paternal grandma lost three daughters born after my dad. She prayed to name the next child

'Kuppan', if it is a male. So my first chithappA is nick named Kuppan and his official name is Lakshman.

Tami lovers translate their Sanskrit names into Tamil. :thumb:

The poet who was named 'Sooriya Narayanan' changed it as 'Paridhi Maal' and added 'kalaignar' to it.

So he got the name Paridhi + Maal + Kalaignar = ParidhimaaR kalaignar. [eg. paal + kadal = paaRkadal]

But nothing to beat this translation! Can you guess the original Sanskrit name of 'Ponnavaikko'?

Dr.M.Ponnavaikko)

P.S: Answer for this puzzle tomorrow, if no reply is given!

Suryanarayana Sastri was born at
Tirupparankunram in a Brahmin family. He graduated in Tamil and was soon employed as a

Professor
of Tamil in the Madras Christian College. In 1895, Suryanarayana Sastri rose to become the Head of Department

of Tamil at the Madras Christian College. He was one of the early pure Tamil activists. He changed his name Suryanarayana

Sastri to its pure Tamil form Parithimaar Kalaignar.

Dear Sri PJ Ji, Sir,

I have noticed a pattern in your threads. You seem to respond only to the posters you are comfortable with (nothing against Srimathi RR Ji). I noticed this with your other threads as well.

When you open a thread, and if others respond, it is my opinion that you understand that they do so willingly, enhancing that thread, even though you may not agree with the view point, giving their time and thought.

You have a larger responsibility to the members who post their views.

From. mango to changing names, I feel jilted by you. :)

Next time, I will think twice before responding to your posts. Sorry, if I have offended you. Just my observation.

Regards,
KRS

Dear RR ji,

One of the reasons my husband said he agreed to the marriage proposal cos he liked my name Renuka.

So once I asked him..."just say if my name was Ponnuthayi would you have married me?"

He said No!

Dear Renu,

I could not control my loud laughter seeing the name 'Ponnuthaayi!'

Such a name for a beauty??

My Guru's youngest daughter was named 'Shyamala' but she changed it as 'Vanathi'.

She is a sings in the recitals of many leading dancers. :thumb:

In this Film,' EDITHIR NEECHAL' the Hero wanted to change his original name" Kunjithapatham" as he is harassed because of his name; and changes to a modern Name, and wins a Race.
In the Final Scene he openly admits his original name.

Many Change their original name as per numerology even though their original name was not bad.

There is a cute news reader in a T V channel named 'KaNNaathaaL'!

I used to think, 'Why not she change her name to something modern?'

Scholar or scoundrel, mind works in a funny way. Changing ones name could be one. Originally in India everybody is supposed to have a name according to one's Raasi. This custom is followed every where in the North. But due to bad deeds of some Maantrikas of Kerala the practice was discontinued 'officially'. But Maantrikas have been replaced by numerologists who help you to add or repeat a few letters to change luck. Mostly the rechristened guys become popular (?!) with immunity. Venkat became Venkatesh, Kothandaraman becomes Kondu, Dandapaani become Dandu. But still at home they might have been "saniyane", mundam, peedhe, darithram, udavakkarai, or kasamalam or even kammanatti. Oh what is in name. Kannamba is blind, ponnamma is goldless, mahaluxmi in half rags, and so on and so forth.

Hey Sri PJ,

Are you conveniently ignoring my post? What is your response?

KRS
