Naming a human born into the human race after another equally placed member of the human race is not a way for release from bondage. Name them after the lord of Sri Vaikuntam, like Madhava, Govinda. The mother who names her children after the lord of my soul will never enter hell.

Those days, name 'Govinda' inherently meant Lord Govinda. These days, people have many interpretations - parents name Govinda after a famous actor (google search fetches the actor's images first!), or his grand-dad or friend Govinda who was a rich business man or an engineer or a kilAdi etc.

So, naming or calling 'Govinda', while meaning to remember Lord Govinda, is what PeriyAzhwAr would have meant

Very true! That is why I get upset when some words like 'kadan--rA', 'dhadi-A' are added with the God's name by parents,

while calling the children with anger! :blah:

P.S: When Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan was telecast, my friend used to tell me that the image of Arun Govil comes to her

mind when she calls her son as 'Ram'. :lol:

We perform Puja and this includes Astrothram,Sahasranamam or Laksharchana etc We chant and glorify Devine name thus seek the blessings of Almighty God. Chanting name of God is a source for Bliss. Is it not?

I think baby nomenclature has more to do with ' Parental Heroes '.

These "Parental Heroes' could've been from just any walk of life - from Politics
to Cinema to Religion - add to this the current trends in vogue and one has a
real Khichidi.

So, you have Gandhis who speak no Gujarati, Boses who speak no Bengali, Kennedys
who speak no English and Stalins who speak no Russian. You also have Subramnia Bharathis
who speak hopeless Tamil [ courtesy movie Thillu Mullu ]

The dullest boy in my batch was a guy named "Surya Prakash" and the boy who matched him
in being dim was a boy - "Poornachandra Rao " ! Then you have a lot of guys going by the name
"Rajesh" - the "Khanna" was conveniently dropped once the super star faded away!

Then you had Gnanasundarams becoming Arivazhagans, Somasundarams becoming Madiazhagans
Premasundarams becoming Anbazhagans - you know the motive behind these trans-nomenclatures.

So, it's not just the Gods / Grandparents' names that is the yardstick anymore.

Well, he says by those who learn these 9+1 versus in which he beseeches people to name their kids after Thirumal will get to the decorated Sri Vaikuntam and spend eternity there.

So, OP is more than 1000 years late with his lamentation, but he is in "good" company, Periyazhvar.

I googled T. Rajendar to find out who he is, and yes, he can be annoying sometimes, even often, but is he the one who comes to your mind with the two rhyming words? Are there not more deserving candidates, some we find right here in this forum !!!!

Motives not withstanding dear Yay Yem I find the the Tamil names much more beautiful and enthralling. I love the Tamil names Azhvars use in their pasurams and the Sanskrit equivalents are downright sophomoric. South is where you find the most exquisite names, take a look: கள்ளழகர், கூடலழகர், மகரநெடுங்குழைக்காதன், காசினிவேந்தன், வைத்தமாநிதி, மாயக்கூத்தன், கள்ளப்பிரான், ஆதிப்பிரான், தெய்வச்சிலையார், உரகமெல்லணையான் and many more.
