As advised by my physiotherapist I was on the look out for a maid to sweep and mop my flat every day.

The job takes only 15 minutes even when I do it thoroughly.

With the seebru dance (seebru = broom) the servants perform usually,
it may take 10 minutes at the most.

The previous servant was paid 150 p.m. a few years ago. The maid laughs sarcastically when offered Rs 300/ p.m.

No one is willing to work for any sum less than 600 Rs p.m.
even though the internal area of the flat itself is less than 600 sq.feet!!!

Net result ...???

I continue to do the chores despite the advice given by my physiotherapist - since I do not want to be cheated/fleeced.

Apparently for all the thee jobs ( vessels, clothes and mopping)
they charge at the rate of 500 Rs per job.

If only one job is given the pay is 600 Rs.

That is not the end of the story.

To clean the bathing room an extra 50 Rs per bath room! :dizzy:

An additional Rs 30 for cleaning each of the wash basins.

So after paying through the nose (and eyes ) a sum of Rs. 800+

I still will have to do the nasty job of toilet cleaning in addition to the
vessels and clothes :faint:

One family pays Rs 1800 p.m for the servant!!!

Tell me honestly who is to be blamed for this...

the greedy servant or the lazy lousy flat occupants??? :mad2:

Shri Narasimhan,

Let us not blame only the super-rich in our community (நமது சமூக பெரும்பணக்காரர்கள்) for the ills perceived by you.
It is equally the mistake of the middle class housewifes and their husbands who are unable to control their wifes and help them in cooking.

As more and more people are improving their economic status, due to one factor or another, we do not have "widows" wh were kept aloof and could earn a small livelihood from cooking for a fee, and similar occupations. Today women have changed a lot; for example does anyone compel his/her daughter to cook when she is around ten? No. The daughter grows up as unaware of household chores, as the son and she starts earning very high salary by the time she is 22 or 23 or even earlier.

When the society is changing so much and so fast, simply weeping about the cooks putting conditions is rather silly. In my house I used to help my wife as much as I could even when some guests were there; only nowadays, due to age-related problems I am unable to do as much help. I don't have daughters but even if I had, I don't think they would do even a quarter of the household chores which my wife does. That is the result of the changing society and we cannot stop this.

We have vaadhyars who will make all preparations including for cooking in the case of sraaddham and simpler functions. I hope similar arrangements will be available in your place also.

In the case of very poor tabras they should either dispense with such functions or find some help from neighbours, relatives etc., I think.

hi
once upon a time...too much exploitation of cooks/maids/vadhyars in our community....now the days are gone NOW WE HAVE TO

ADOPT.....LIKE DO IT YOURSELF.....LIKE CEILING FAN IS MAY BE CHEAPER...BUT SOME TIMES THE ELECTRICIAN FEE IS MORE

THAN FAN'S PRICE....

We can not blame the cooks. They also wish "to earn good amount of money be doing less work", which

seems to be the 'motto' of modern days!

I remember how the huge 11 rows 'seer murukku' - 101 for sambandhis and 50 for the brides side, some

more for friends - and similar seer bhakshaNams were prepared for my eldest sister's wedding. All our

friend mAmi's will finish their morning routine and assemble in our house around 10 am. The 'bhakshaNam

project' will go up to the evening with snacks and coffee in between. A special 'kodi aduppu' was made in

the shed at the back yard for this purpose. Most of the ladies knew to make 'kai murukku'. Now a days

everyone goes out for work and young girls have loads of lessons to learn. I find that most of the girls do

not know how to draw 'kOlam', how to make flower garlands, how to stitch a blouse and so on, which

were part of our learning, when we were young. Our generation was different. Most of the ladies stayed

at home to take care of the children and the other house hold chores. We can not expect it in this

generation. When I asked one of my music student whether she would learn to stitch, she coolly said,

'Why should I, Maam? There are so many tailors around and also many ready made dresses available!'

Money is the KEY which opens all the doors to the best in each category

best tailor, best beauty parlor, best restaurants, best vehicles.....

No need for the girls to stay indoors , bundle up their talents and

learn to live with in their means with the meagre salalry earned

by the husband and learn to do everything by themselves to save money.

My son's friend's wife went for a fancy hair cut.

But since she did not have an appointment and the hair stylist was busy.

she went for a manicure and pedicure instead.

Will this idea ever occur to us - the old fashioned and old ladies???

Dear VR ji,

When I was in India I noticed many middle class homes which has no maids..they still get someone to wash the bathrooms.

My friend who was an Iyengar was renting a room in a Kannada Brahmin home and on weekends I used to hang out there.

I noticed that they had a maid just to come clean the bathroom..so one day the maid could not come for work and for almost 2 weeks the bathroom was not cleaned!

Still no one in the house cleaned the bathroom!LOL

Actually cleaning one's own bathroom is no big deal..since now there are not foreign maids for us anymore here..I do all cleaning myself and I feel I do a better job cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom than what my former maid was doing.

One has to be very careful with how others clean the bathroom.

Once in a hotel room in India I noticed the bathroom cleaner using the same brush to clean the toilet to wash the pail in the room too!

So when hiring people to clean our house bathrooms one needs to make sure they are hygenic and know the rules of hygiene...otherwise we are going to get all sorts of infections.

So doing the bathroom cleaning ourselves is still a safer bet!

The cost of labour has gone up in all fields. The I.A.S officer who started with Rs.400 plus D.A in 1970 now starts with Rs 15600 plus D.A. This is true in all fields.

But we would like some fields to remain static or stagnant. One is the Vadhyar fees and the other cooks/domestic servants. This O.P being specific to Cooks let us see how the position is. A good cook can earn a lot of money. Chefs are some of the highest paid professionals.

In addition to this there is an acute shortage of Cooks as well as Domestic servants. Getting a Brahmin Cook in Chennai is almost next to impossible.

You have to pay the market rate for any service. The market rate is determined by some of the factors I have mentioned above. You can not blame anyone for that.

I used to pay Rs. 25 for cleaning our garden when we settled in West K K nagar house in 1985.

Now the 'fee' is Rs. 500/- The account book I maintained soon after my wedding surprises me!

The monthly expenses including servant maid's fee (Rs. 25 ) will be just about 400 + and I used

to save the rest from the Rs. 500 budget! This was in 1976. Now, each time I buy vegetables

and fruits to last for five days, I shell out at least Rs. 500/.
This is 'kAlaththin kOlam'! :clock:

Dear Mr.Sangom,

You said that we should not blame the super rich in our community for the ills, according to your
version, perceived by me. Thank you for your comments.
Do you think that you are the only person helping his wife in her daily chores. No dear almost all
of us are helping our homemakers in one way or other. Dont say all others are unable to control
their wifes.

Improving ones economic status is the result of that person's hard work, and not due to one factor or other. Kindly let me know those factors you referred to.

You further goes on to say that sons and daughters are earning very high salary. Do you want those sons and daughters to pay those who do little work and demand more money. If you have any one working in an IT company you please ask him/her if he/she could earn easy money from their employers. In IT firms it is the employers who dictate terms and conditions to the receivers,
whereas in the case of cooks whom you pity a lot, are dictating terms and conditions.
Did you know the difference now.

You goes on to say that there are vaadhyars who could arrange cooks and all other preparations.
I think you are living in a castle high above in a highraise building. Please come down and see the
world around you. The nexus between vaadhyars and cooks are well known to everybody except
you.

Atlast you suggest to poor tabras to either dispense with such functions or find some help from
neighbours,or relatives as if relatives are there to help them. Your suggestion

Mr.Nacchinarkiniyan.

I agree with you in toto. The wages are fixed according to market rate.sure. What is the present
market rate for a good cook. How much of work either we can expect from him or the quantum of work he will turn out. Is there any rule that we must accept his conditions even after we accept the market rate. Why should one blame anyone for that.

Sir, Things are changing everyday. Change in life is inevitable. While few have grievances of servant maid charging higher wage/pay, there are few who are unable to find a suitable maid for house hold chores despite their standing in the locality. In our house the servant always comes like a 'lightening', immediately there will be thunders and leave with all silence. The interesting part of the house maids are that they carry more information about the houses they visit. They will exchange news adding theirown masalas and present this in more exciting manner. A day can pass without a serial on a TV but not a without visit of 'servant maid'. Just ask some question and provoke them, to your surprise you will get all the information about your neighbours. Hiring a servant maid in other words means provision of an outlet of information of your house to others.

Rise in rural income fuelling food inflation: RBI Governor D Subbarao

This is from the horse's mouth; he wants the rural poor folk to eat less to contain inflation.

6 Apr 2013
BANGALORE: Impressive rise in rural incomes is fuelling food inflation as people's dietary habits are changing for the better and increasing consumption, RBI Governor D Subbarao said today.

Subbarao said here the poor segments of the population are seeing an increase in income, leading to shift in their dietary habits. People are shifting from cereals to protein and eating more of egg, meat, milk, vegetables, pulses and fruits and "that's causing food inflation".

Dear Renu,

In Sing. Chennai, helper maids feel it below their dignity to clean the toilets. Even if they agree to clean

the bath area, the toilet cleaning is done only by a group of workers. Since it is hard to find them, most

of the 'illaththarasis' do this cleaning, before their head bath! Rarely, 'illaththrasans' agree to do the job.

With the new type of cleansers, there are no fumes while cleaning.

There used to be a time when the children followed theirfather’s profession; a cook’s son generally turned out to be a cook (perhaps abetter cook!); a vadhyar’s son took over his father’s profession and hisclients, .. and so on. With changingtimes, everyone wants their children to study and do well for themselves inlife. They don’t want their children tofollow them into their profession. Thatseems to be the main reason for this shortage of ‘professionals’. For example, my maid’s son is studying in anEngineering college on the Government’s empowerment scheme. My Brahmin cook’s children are doing well incolleges. Apparently, they won’t getinto their parents profession. This is the scenario throughout and is the mainreason for the exorbitant fees they charge (to enable them to have theirchildren study) and for the shortage of these professionals.

Smt. Raji Ram,

This trend is not only in Plur. Chennai; in Trivandrum also, our maid who has been working for the last 19 years for my household, and many years earlier in my father-in-law's adjacent house, also said once, a few years back that it would be not possible for her to clean the bath rooms and latrines any more, because her children are compelling her not to do those two jobs on health grounds of her grandchildren. It seems our maid servant's college educated daughters fear that if their mother routinely cleans toilets in others' houses their children have a high chance to get infected.

After a lot of persuasion she is now cleaning the bathing area in latrine-cum-bathrooms and charges Rs. 100 per such bathroom per month. We pay Rs. 1000/= p.m. and it is concessional rate for us because of our long association and our financial helps for her grandchild's two major open heart operations. For a new tenant in our house the going rate will be around Rs. 2400/= upwards for the three basic jobs viz., floor cleaning, vessels cleaning and drying clothes from washing machine; bathroom cleaning extra, of course.

Our maid servant works in about 12 to 15 houses AFAWK and must be earning near about Rs. 25,000/= p.m. She gets up, it seems by 4.00 A.M., prepares some food for her daughter's family and travels 18 kms by bus to reach our colony by about 6.00 A.M> and, after finishing her round of all the houses, returns at around 7.30 or even 8.00 P.M. bus from our side. Very hard toil but since she is 100% honest demand for her services is constant.

We also do not grudge her gradual progress in life and advise her to save something for her old age, since one cannot be sure about the attitudes of daughters and sons-in-law. She is a very mature woman and great planner and I have a feeling that she is definitely doing something already for her old age, though she is completely reticent to reveal anything (to others).

Dear Sangom Sir,

We should be happy to see the next generation coming up to a good standard. We gave our spare

computer table and chair to the son of Ram's sister's helper maid, when she told us that he is doing

his C A! He has cleared one part and is all set to appear for his final exam. We are really proud of him.

The maid says that the table and chair brought luck to her son! So nice of her. :)
