Dear RR ji,

At my house my husband cuts the grass becos we have a grass cutting machine at home.
But since he has been busy and not able to cut the grass the grass had started to grow.

So some 2 weeks ago I saw a grass cutter and asked him to cut the grass..that time my husband had gone out nearby to get some groceries and he would be coming back in some 5 minutes time.

Here we have Pakistani or Bangladeshi foreign workers who cut grass on weekends when they are off from their main work.

So this guy a Pakistani was cutting the grass and after 5 minutes my husband came home..I thought he would be happy to see the grass being cut so that he does not have to cut it himself but to my surprise all hell broke loose and my husband was angry with me!LOL

I got nice scolding becos my husband said he was planning to cut the grass himself in the evening.

The Pakistani must have heard the argument at home cos when I went to pay him his fee he said in Malay "Madam..don't worry I will give you my mobile number..when Sir is not at home I will come and cut the grass"

I told him no need for his phone number and thanked him for doing the job.

I did not dare tell my husband that they guy was suggesting to call him to cut grass when my husband was not in..I was pretty sure if my husband knew what he said....I would have got another round of scolding from my husband.

Dear Renu,

In my sweet home, all odd jobs will wait ONLY for me! I shall tell you one episode!

When we painted our house three years back, the painter went on a vacation and left the grill and window

painting pending! I did not want to wait till he returned and so I finished the job within ten days, working

six hours per day! Now I am surprised how I did so much! :ballchain:

Same story here. If the contractor gets another job, he sends the people for the new place, leaving our job 'thirupati mottai,; even though he promises to send someone else to finish unfinished work, it never happens. He doesn't even turn up to collect the balance money.

In government orders, last 10% of the payment will never be released (as per the contract, it will be given only after the customer gives all clear, everything done and fully satisfied letter). The seller is also not bothered because it is already added in the quote.

There are institutional facilities available - sampradayic mutts or small temples, for the sraddam on individual or collective basis. In Ragavendra mutt, about ten to twelve do sraddam with individual sankalpam. The charges were Rs 150 some years ago, now rising to 450.

I hope S. Chennai too has such facilities.

Some people want to have the pie and eat it too!
Not wiling to spend money...
nor willing to do it by oneself!!
Expecting to get the best of both worlds
but accepting the worst of both worlds!!

For doing justice to the food offered in a sraardham,
a person must be used to eating that much of food everyday.

Nowadays even our pundits are aware of the health problems
and have cut down their food intake drastically.

Some pundits prefer cash instead of the traditional meal .
Others prefer the swayam baagam with dakshiNai and a soman set.

My dear Raji,
YOU DID because YOU COULD!
If you couldn't you would have waited
for the painter like everybody else.

What is the fun if all are alike; how will you ever know that you are better!

I may be included in that "Some people" quoted by you.
I never claimed to be better than the rest, in any of my posts.

So,we have had a nice debate on தற்கால சமையல்காரர்கள்.Is it to be continued or we should
put an end to this thread.? This is to be decided by veterans like Mrs.Visalakshi Ramani,Mrs.Rajiram,
Mr.Sarang,Mr.sangom and other ladies and gentemen.

I subscribe to the principle that the thread starter has a right over his thread because he he/she has given birth to it. But threads stray and the well known 80-20 rule holds good for threads too. That is only 20% is useful information. But the thread starter must be firm and put 'muttukatttai' whenever necessary to steer the 'ther' in the right path. Thers have no steering mechanism and no brakes till BHEL Tiruchy volunteered to replace the wheels.

But our painters take advance from us before escaping!! :bolt:

And we too believe their words!

Dear Sir,

Sing. Chennai has even 'life time payment' facility! One of our friends has deposited life time payment for

doing srAddham for his parents @ Rs. 5,000 each! Cool, right. IF they attend, they will get 'pirtru sEsham'. :thumb:

Sir, Lot has been discussed about the servant maid and their wage/pay etc. What about the output? Quality wise does they deserve? They will be quite liberal in wasting ingredients and expect us to be liberal while offering wage. Most of them will be only duty conscious in completing the menu mechanically within the stipulated time.'Koolikku Maradikkarathu'. Bcos they are hired once in a while. Dedication will be missing especially when there is absolute ban on the practice of tasting the dishes before serving. By sitting in the Hall one should be able to tell what is being cooked at the kitchen through the aroma!! That should be a standard. Kitchen is a nice place which can be used to ones advantage to win the heart of others!!. Food is important! Quality food is much more important! Above all we also need to tie our tongue!

Veterans don't have the SAY!!

If the thread starter likes the 'brahma mudichchu', he can write to the moderator! :typing:

P.S: I am surprised to note that while I am identified as a 'nalla poNNu' in the literature section,
I am considered Mr. Raji Ram in this thread. Is this called 'gender equality'?? Attn: T V K Sir!! :horn:

Depending upon maid servant culture is only prevalent in India (do not know much about other Asian countries).

Our son’s family in US and daughter’s family in UK depend upon themselves for every thing including Toilet cleaning. It is not a big deal if one cleans his own toilet, and even our Mahatma Gandhi did it.

We, in India, depend on others, even for ironing our cloths, driving the car, etc etc
Coming to engaging Professional cooks during functions like seemadham, Ayush homam etc, because we prefer a particular type of menu, do not restrict the number of invitees, and some want Madi Samayal, we have no other options except engaging a professional cook, but it is not the case with US.

Raji Madam, VR madam and those members, who are in US, will surely agree with me on this.

In US , they restrict the number of invitees, prepare the food themselves if help is available or drive to an Indian restaurants nearby for lunch.
In Chennai and other big cities there are many number of very good pure vegetarian hotels who deliver food at your door step for a minimum of 25 or so. But NO MADI SAMAYAL, no particular Menu, an extra item may cost more; but this will workout much cheaper than engaging a professional cook and going behind her for every thing.
There are Mutts like Ragavendra Temple Facility is also available in Chennai, do not know about other cities.

I was told that Madhya Kailash Temple Adayar does yearly Srardham on certain conditions like depositing a certain amount of money with them like that.
Many from US also take the advantage of this facility.

Since Dish washer, Washing machine Vacuum Cleaners are used and there is no water problem in US and UK, they do not depend upon any outsiders.
Once in a month or 45 days they in US engage Mexicans specially trained in House cleaning to clean every thing including ceiling fans, Venetian blinds, toilets, closets etc and are paid 100$ or so.
In UK it is different, there they engage on yearly basis professionals to clean window glasses, etc but not inside the home.
In both US and UK, grass cutting etc are done only by the in mates as outside labor is very costly as they charge on hourly basis for their work.

For doing srardham , special type of menu, and if the number of guests are more , then there is no other way except arranging a professional cook or doing it in HIRANYA RUPRNA.

Of course, doing srardham either in US or UK is a bit difficult one because of many constraints like availability of number of Sasthrigal, etc; many send money to an orphanage for the children on that particular day; this mind set up is absent in many Brahmin family.
My elder brother who was in Bangalore (he is no more) used to send money to an orphanage fo the children on such occasions and also on other occasions like Pongal, Deepavali etc.

This type of mind set is missing among many of Tamil Brahmins, they think that only Brahmins Bhojan on Srardham day is appropriate and pay the price of engaging Professional cooks for every thing.

Everyone purse may not be big, so change your mind to do srasrdham in Hiranya Rupam, Still washing utensils , washing cloths, etc need some help in India as water is a problem.
Also as more dusts due to pollution, it is not easy to use vacuum cleaner everyday, so considering these things, one has to engage a servant maid for these chores and pay plus Coffee, and whatever we can give her like excess Sambar, Rasam etc.

Although we go to India , once in two years , we also engage a servant maid for one time visit and pay her Rs 1000/- plus coffee , and give her extras like Sambar, Rasam etc as we prefer cooking every day ( unlike in US, due to climate, food items gets spoiled even if is kept in Fridge in India/Chennai)

WOW! This post has raised the value of this thread sky high! :first:

Does the 80-20 ratio still hold good ??? :noidea:

The only thing lacking is a diamond diadem. :drama:

I am sure it will also appear very soon! :peace:

Dear P J Sir,

A nice and detailed post from you! ( You know that I don't click the like button!)

In the next generation, finding helper maids might be a problem because most of their children

are well educated. When they find a good job, they insist that the mother should NOT work, thinking

that it is below their dignity! Time will come soon when most of the people will prefer to live in small

flats so that at least the outside cleaning would be done by some worker!

only through Drivers, servant maids, Iron man,Milk supply boy, Newspaper throwing boy , information about old couple living alone goes out and they are attacked in Chennai.

Thanks VR madam for your like;

Here is one more "Vasishtar vaayaal Brahmarishi title" for you sir :)

In USA you can live for days, weeks and months without meeting anyone in particular.

Self driving, no servants, self ironing of clothes (if at all), milk is purchased in bulk from the

supermarket and no newspaper boys to spread the gossip.

But at times we wish to interact with some humans. At least I do. :)
