Here is one more "Vasishtar vaayaal Brahmarishi title" for you sir :)

In USA you can live for days, weeks and months without meeting anyone in particular.

Self driving, no servants, self ironing of clothes (if at all), milk is purchased in bulk from the

supermarket and no newspaper boys to spread the gossip.

But at times we wish to interact with some humans. At least I do. :)

VR MADAM

once you start living in US after getting your Green card you will understand / learn few things.

There are many facilities like Skype/ Magic Jack ( you can get US number and instal it in any of your close relatives home in Chennai or anywhere), many very cheap calling cards to India/ Chennai including.

That way you can get in touch with all of your close relatives.
only thing you will probably miss is your personal presence in family functions like Seemandham etc where also WEB CAMERAS are installed and one can view the entire function sitting anywhere in the world!!

After 180 days of continuous stay in US ( after Green Card) you are at liberty to move out to India or to any country, but you must come back before the expiry of 180 days.

We were doing like that initially, but nowadays due to very high cost of Air Travel, we go to Chennai, once in 2 years for a couple of months, then to UK ( where our daughter is there ) for a couple of months and return to US.

Advantage of Green card: no problem while facing the US immigration.. Raja mathiri varalam.

Once a police man came to check the proof of residence. After talking to us for some time, I gave him

a cup of coffee (strong, P J Sir!). Then he told us that he can arrange for a special policeman to protect us,

in case we needed! We said a big NO in chorus. :D

for one cup of "besh besh coffee???"

It is probably not correct, may be for doing one time srardham, for doing life long, meaning till the Kartha is alive, it requires a lump sum deposit of not less than 2- lacs ( exact figure can be obtained from the temple itself)

If you had given your Coffee, The policeman would have sent a Gunda to your home to tell never to give such coffee to anyone!!

This deposit was made about 15 years back, Sir! May be the rates are high now!

I know that my coffee is different form the coffee that others take! :decision:

Dear Renu,

In Sing. Chennai, helper maids feel it below their dignity to clean the toilets. Even if they agree to clean

the bath area, the toilet cleaning is done only by a group of workers. Since it is hard to find them, most

of the 'illaththarasis' do this cleaning, before their head bath! Rarely, 'illaththrasans' agree to do the job.

With the new type of cleansers, there are no fumes while cleaning.

this is a carryover of the erstwhile caste thing.

when i was young, in badagara, we had bucket toilets, cleaned once in 3 days, by thOttis. these were untouchables, and even the cash my grandma used to give, used to be 2 feet apart in height.

this was carried over to the cities, and these were separate thOtti cleaners even in my mandaveli neighbourhood, who came a few minutes a day, and cleaned the toilet.

my mother, did not have this prejudice, and cleaned the toilet herself. her only agony was guests, who came, and dirtied the toilet. incidentally, this happens even in toronto, where some of our desi guests, splatter the toilet with their poo, and do not think of using the brush nearby to clean it. yours truly does, this and remembers this forever. those guests are always referred to by these incidents, and never invited again.

the society is changing fast, and the sign of development is the rarity if not absence of lower end jobs. to weep, that these used to be affordable and not so these days, is childish i think, and does not take into consideration, that these lower end folks inherited these tasks due to the caste system or economic need.

that their children are now becoming doctors or IAS officers, is something as a society, we should be proud.

re not getting help for sratham or weddings, my suggestion is to reduce the level of committment - after all my grandfather, after grandma died, did with vaazhakkai/rice for the vadhyar. same went for my dad when he was sick and unable to perform. life goes on.

When I was in West Virginia for a seemantham function, at Ram's sister's house, most of the guests

made even the wash basins dirty by spraying the pan! It was disgusting! Every time I entered the toilet,

I found both the wash basin and toilet dirty. I usually have a head bath after cleaning the toilet but that

day, I did the cleaning at least four to five times, since I wanted the next person to find a clean toilet.

I was really

We can not blame the cooks. They also wish "to earn good amount of money be doing less work", which

seems to be the 'motto' of modern days!

I remember how the huge 11 rows 'seer murukku' - 101 for sambandhis and 50 for the brides side, some

more for friends - and similar seer bhakshaNams were prepared for my eldest sister's wedding. All our

friend mAmi's will finish their morning routine and assemble in our house around 10 am. The 'bhakshaNam

project' will go up to the evening with snacks and coffee in between. A special 'kodi aduppu' was made in

the shed at the back yard for this purpose. Most of the ladies knew to make 'kai murukku'. Now a days

everyone goes out for work and young girls have loads of lessons to learn. I find that most of the girls do

not know how to draw 'kOlam', how to make flower garlands, how to stitch a blouse and so on, which

were part of our learning, when we were young. Our generation was different. Most of the ladies stayed

at home to take care of the children and the other house hold chores. We can not expect it in this

generation. When I asked one of my music student whether she would learn to stitch, she coolly said,

'Why should I, Maam? There are so many tailors around and also many ready made dresses available!'
hi RR madam,

Now a days everything available in GRAND SWEETS/SRI KRISHNA stores....all other ritual items available like

GIRI STORES in chennai.....all podis/bakshanam ready tp order available.....ONLY MONEY IS REQUIRED.....like call taxi...

everything within reach.......ready made clothes are cheaper than stiched ones....SOME TIMES BUY ONE GET ONE FREE...

so life is so fast ...so simple.....make it easier... all books/cds available for mantras.... try to practise...LIKE HOMEDEPOT

SLOGAN IN USA.....DO IT YOURSELF....no complaining/blame game others.....

No one living outside India depends upon cooks/maid servants; once you cross the shores of India, this culture is over.

Why blame the cooks or maid servants for asking more ? Even for Sri Varalaksmi Viratham, Pillayar chathuthi, Kozakkatai is easily available if one books early with Sri Krishna sweets or Grand Snacks; one can do srardham either by Hiranya rupam or by going to Raghavendra Mutt, but if one wishes to do Homa Srardham, then they have to be prepared to engage cook for that, because the number of inmates, plus the brother/ sister families, plus Sasthrigal means more preparation.

We are not having the mind set to donate to an Old age home, or to an orphanage for food on that day.
Those of us who are in US, depend upon ourselves, in case food can not be prepared at home drive to nearby Indian Restaurant and eat there on whatever might be the occasion.

When there are many number of facilities are available in Chennai, why bother appointing a cook ?

hi p j sir,

just info...i used to read INDIA ABROAD magazine in USA regularly....in the ad column....ALWAYS HEAVY DEMAND FOR INDIAN COOKS...

ESPECIALLY SOUTH INDIAN COOKS FOR INDIAN RESTAURANTS.....its like highly demand job in USA....so the main problem

is SUPPLY AND DEMAND theory....supply less demand more..then the result....SCARSCITY....some of our forefathers

exploited a lot..but now we are suffering....i have real expreiences....my mother's three uncles had three IYER HOTELS IN CHENNAI..

one is tambaram/ t nagar/ triplicane tooo....nearly more than 50 years...they run hotel business in chennai....now kids

are doings different jobs..nobody is in hotel business....even my own maternal grandfather/uncles had hotel business....

now everything gone....CHANGE IS INEVITABLE..CHANGE IS THE NATURAL LAW....

ஐயா! வயசு உடம்புக்குத்தான்.... மனசுக்கு இல்லை!

This is the honour I got:

நீவிர் ஒரு நல்ல பெண்மணி.உன்னை மாதிரி பெண்களை காண்பது மிக அரிது.

Even the home maker ladies prefer to buy sweets for 'naivEdhyam' on special days. Most of the people

are on diet and many are 'sweet blooded' too! So, just buy small amount and consume it in one go! Why

to keep oil on the stove and wonder how to 'kAlify' the used oil!?? The 'vadAm', 'pickles', 'bhakshaNam'

projects are NOT happening in most of the houses in Sing. Chennai.

I like to make pickles, juices and jams. With Kunjuppu Sir's guidance, I made 'wine grape thokku',

when Ram and I were in Boston. Also succeeded in making good squash and jelly with wine grapes,

which we got in plenty at the backyard. Our friends and relatives in the U S of A and India relished them! :)

Greetings.

I can't talk for 'srartham' or such 'madi' cooking.

If it is for a simpler function, if the invitees are from the same locality, every family can bring one item enough for 4 or 5 persons. If all the 'vanjanams' and 'payasam' may be brought in like that, then cooking some rice and some more dishes would not be difficult at all. Once we had about 35 to 40 guests, but everyone brought something. We quite easily managed few 'exotic dishes' like 'paanjamirtham', 'then kuzhambu', couple types of poriyal etc in the morning.

Alternatively, can get the samayal by 'catering'. We just make rice and coffee. Recently my elder sister conducted 'Sudharsana Homam'. She managed lunch like that. Samayal was supplied for about 30 persons... she easily managed that for about 45 persons.

In the olden days although it was a huge crowd, everyone pitched in with cooking; so, it was easy. Nowadays we like to be 'served'... then we have to pay.

Cheers!

The problem pointed out in the OP was that the demands of cooks is very high!

We all know that if we shell out money, there are many options available! But

this increase in the demand of fee is inevitable! The mason who used to get 100

in 80s is demanding 800. Pressing one silk saree costs Rs. 30... What can we do?

Greetings.

Recently I was in India. My thirumathi at one point said " pudavai kasangi pochuppa! I can't wear it unless I can get it ironed!".... Well, We together nicely 'pulled the saree' fold by fold to take away the wrinkles and ironed it neatly. My sister-in-law was watching... i don't think I imagined jealousy....

Than kaiye thankku udhavi. Australia ponaalum avaraikkai saapidanumaa? We have to he to help ourselves, get what we need.

Everyone wants to earn more and more money in India. ( No, it is not that bad in many other countries. Money is not that important... life style is more important than money). So, if the cook thinks he/she can get more money, he/she would demand for that.

What can we do? do it ourselves! ( I am quite surprised to see the question ' what can we do?' from RR. Rs. 30 may not be much.. bribe Ram with something else.. iron the next saree with Ram.. it is an experience worth Rs.1,000s... one has to experience to enjoy it).

Cheers!

Raji Madam

Brahmin women use the same Silk saree without washing, on number of occasions;Madich madichu almerah vil vachu!!
If the Silk Saree has a mouth, it will beg you to wash it!!

Yes ironing Silk saree costs!! Just fold it, spread a thin cotton towel over it, and keeping the heat at minimum level , try to Iron it!!

The idea that Raghy Sir gave will never work out in my sweet home! I already wrote that all odd

jobs wait only for ME!! I know to iron a saree but the finish that the professionals give could not be

achieved even with a water spray iron box!! I do 'janatha ironing' of blouses and churidhar bottoms.

Actually I wanted to write in the 'Ideas...' thread.

Janatha ironing = ironing ONLY the parts of the dress which will be visible!

For example: Only right side and back side of the blouses......

Anyway, for modern ladies no back side for blouse and so no iron ;)

Only the lower portion of bottom of the churidhar set!

No one can find out if the portion is pressed or not! right??

Dear P J Sir,

I AM different! Which ever dress I wear outside has to be washed and kept in almirah, whether it is a

pattu saree or lottu saree. I have lots of poly silk sarees only because they could be machine washed

and need ironing only after two or three washes. If we fold the saree while damp and roll it tightly and

then dry it, then it will be as good as a pressed saree. I rarely wear silk sarees since they run colour and

costly to maintain! :)

I have one iron box with spray facility. But it takes 30 mts to press one saree! :pout:
