The upcoming state elections are once again going to prove that age is no bar in Politics. In Kerala, two veteran communist leaders V.S Achuthandan (92+) and K.R Gauriamma (almost 97 years) are trying their luck in the election arena. They were fighting Elections for more than 60 years now that means were in active politics even before the formation of the Kerala State. In case Gauriamma, contests this election to which there is a very strong probability, she will be the one and only person to have contested all the general elections held in Kerala ever since 1948 which will be a unique record. She contested her first election to the Tru-Kochi assembly from Chertala assembly constituency way back in 1948 as a candidate of unified Communist party and ever since have not missed any assembly elections.

When age grows energy diminish which may lead to inefficiency. As such there should be a retirement age for politicians too who wanted to serve the country, in the interest of better performance.

While there is retirement age for all Government Servants, there should be retirement age for politicians too.

Prescribing retirement age, makes way for the young generation to serve the country. Young generation should be given opportunity.

The retirement from active politics should be fixed at 65 beyond which they should not involve in politics at all.

In politics age has a different meaning

At 42 years Rahul gandhi is a youth leader.

in nineties, they are at the peak .

We have an active DMK icon giving youngsters a run for their money..

In kerala , we have already talked about.

There is a 91 year old contesting in west bengal .

Age means more wisdom.

Many govt types retire at sixty when they are both physically and mentally agile.

They should work at least for a decade more instead of sponging on their children.

I think for effective performance 75 years should be the cut off! Without vigor and energy how are you going to enthuse the masses! You can only be a paper tiger issuing statements!!

Think about the effects of wrong decision taken by a mind which is exhausted due to fatigue, weak, tired, etc

Such wrong decisions will have effect only on the general public, they will be payng the penalty for that.

It is the general public who are going to be affected more by the decisions taken by these politicians.

As such, it is very important to ensure healthy mind takes decisions.

What is important, therefore, is not the biological age of the politician and more important is the effectiveness in correct decision making ability.

At the same time, we cannot ask scientists to retire, though there is retirement age for scientists employed in Government Service, Research Institutes, Academies, etc.

Ultimately it is all in the mind.

Age is hardly a bar if one is determined to achieve.

Little bit of physical weakness can be made up by mental agility and enthusiasm.

Mostly negative thinking and lack of risk appetite sends seniors downhill.

If this is true, why lakhs and lakhs of staff including Officers in IFS, IAS, IPS are made to retire at 58, 60, etc?
Such arguments hold no water.

Politics is the only occupation which commands no physical fitness at all. A person can run the country sitting on a wheel chair! Want proof?!!

Person sitting on wheel chair is not running the country. They are unable to maintain peace in their own family. This proves more ........

Inability of a political leader to maintain peace in his own family is due to accumulation of wealth, multiplicity of "thunaiviyar" and their off springs. He is reaping now, what he sowed during the past six decades ! Moreover, his physical fitness has nothing to do with his activities. He is blessed with a strong tongue (that can shower abuses & praises on everybody) that no one in the country can match !

This may be because we need a cut-off for moving the people who have loads of accruals of public money as in PF, gratuity, pension etc. These costs tend to rise with increase in period of employment.

Honestly, I feel that govt should move the retirement age to 55. Can save a lot.

With his socalled blessings, his party was able to win only 23 seats out of 234 seats contested, if I am right in the 2011 Assembly election.

Is it a blessing really.....???

If that is the case and going by the argument that age, energy, skill, productivity etc are irrelevant in fixing the retirement age, why then the staff of Defence Services are allowed to retire early, I mean between from 35 -45 years of age??

It is believed that they are allowed to retire in the interest of the nation, which is to keep the army young,

We seriously rely on the notion that a worker's productivity declines significantly after age 60 +.

In his connection, it may not be out of context if I quote Swami Vivekanandha .........

"Sound mind can exists only in a sound body."

Some exemptions could be there; but exemptions would not become a generalised rule.

Sir, I am not sure about what you are implying but it seems to me that you are batting on my team. :)

haha... may I venture to ask what could possibly be that "unsound desire"?

In this case...both the aspiring politicians are in their 90s.

At anytime anyone can drop dead..so why have unsound desires eg standing for elections cos if they drop dead in a couple of months etc..the Government's money would be wasted to have a bye election.

If they want to contribute to the nation at such a ripe old age they should play King Maker ...be a Pitamahan and groom a young and capable candidate.

One should know when to play active and when to play passive...the scenario is like an aged hooker who does not want to retire and keeps saying 'Hit Me Baby One More Time'!LOL

Fixing retirement age at 55 or 60. may not hold good or all professions.

Could doctors be banned to do practice after 55 or 60 years of age?
Many doctors are expected to be in peak with rich experience and professional skill.

My father constructed a house at the age of 88 years! He supervised the entire construction activity and managed the workforce!! If he does not work he feels lethargic and sick!!

Very true! I saw the frame with the nonagenarian meeting various political leaders! No difference from a coxxxx....

In Government service, both Central as well as State Government, everyone needs to retire by 58 or 60 as the case may be even if he is a Doctor, Scientist, etc

There is no exemption of any type.

Rarely they extend the service by extending their tenure of service and for this they call it re-employment, etc

As for private practice of Doctors, it is patients option.

Though it is reported that there are studies that suggest physician age is inversely related to clinical perforlance, but it seems that the relationship between surgeons and patients outcomes have not beem examined.

Can any patient opt for surgery by a surgeon who is 90+...???

Their services can be utilised best for Academic Excellence.

Government to raise doctors’ retirement age to 70?

Aiming to improve healthcare facilities and making them accessible to the remotest part of the country, a high-level panel of secretaries has suggested to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that doctors’ retirement age should be increased to 70 years and even paramedics should be given training as full-time doctors to increase their availability in such regions.

In a recent presentation given before the Prime Minister, a group of secretaries on “Swasth Bharat Shikshit Bharat”, has recommended that by increasing the retirement age of doctors to 70 years, they will be able to provide their services — especially to the poor — for a longer period of time.

The panel also suggested that if paramedics are trained to be as doctors, there would be a greater number of professionally-equipped medical practitioners who then can be sent to rural areas having no access to healthcare.

Sources privy to the development told this newspaper that another recommendation related to increasing the availability of doctors was that private practitioners should be empanelled in government hospitals, which receive the bulk of patients.
