Today (20.8.2013) is Avani Avittam (Upakarma) for the Yajur Vedis...As it was a Holiday in North India on account of Raksha Bandhan, got up leisurely

We decided to have the function at home...

I had got the Avani Avittam booklet from a local Tambrahm priest...

After the Neivedhyam had a sumptuous lunch with payasam, medu vadai and Appam

Tomorrow is Gayathri Jabam...There is eagerness to do 1008 Gayathris..Let us wait till tomorrow

How did you celebrate the function...

Nanna panninen. Came to office only at 12, since yagyopaveetam had to be changed after maadhyanam. I have the procedure from a book (Anna's, I think) and I usually do it by my self. Then had the blessings from elders.

Today's menu was payasam, rasam and kootu.

Tomorrow, 1008 for sure. and sambhar and vadai. In our family we dont prepare rasam on the japam day. I dont know if this is followed elsewhere.

Sir,

Pranams,

In my case, normally such festival days will be taken care by my wife and she never gives me any opportunity, except for my presence. This time, inasmuch as she had left for U.S, I had to arrange for everything which was quite new to me. I took this as a challenge tried my best and prepared a check list. The list included arranging for Madi Vesti , Angavusthiram, etc

Since I had an assignment requiring my presence at 09.00 AM, and as our Sastrigal is put up at Perungalathur which is at distance, I have decided not to bother him this time and instead to attend the Avani Avittam conducted in the temple in our place by availing the first batch which commences by 6.00 AM sharp. Got up by 5.00 and was at the venue by 6.00 A.M. Punctuality, being one of the qualities I earned thro’ my 34 years of service in Police Department.

Sastrigal was present with his two Assistants. Since, I belong to Rig Vedam I was asked to sit in the Rig Vedam group where we were only few. But, there were lot of Yajur Vedam members. The unity among the members was a nice thing to see. They were found sharing things among them. It also gave me an opportunity to meet few of my friends whom I used to meet at temple on Pradosham days to Chant Sri Rudhram.

Though Sastrigal was interrupted on few occasions by his Mobile, his Assistants took care and the event went on nicely.

Only thing which made me bit embarrassed is that few of the Members offering Dhakshanai of petty value.

Since I am staying alone, I was invited by a close relative of mine for lunch. The menu as usual, Payasam, Appam & Vadai.

Nice day.

With regards:)

thanks for sharing VB.

yes, re the petty value of dakshninai... it is i believe, deeply bred in our community. we will spend lakhs per day on a marriage hall rental, but will grudge the priest for a few hundreds. it used to happen time and again, when i was young, and not sure if it is in a majority of cases.

considering the pettiness, why should we crib if priests are no longer willing to provide us services. after all, they too have to have a living. right?

so sad.

Only special thing about this Aavanni Avittam, there was Thiruvonnam early in the day and progressed to Avittam. Meaning Rg and Yajur Upakarma fell on the same day. Otherwise (and may be in some cases) Rg Vedis would have become Yajur Vedis. Changing the poonnal only matters for some. It will be interesting to know how many did not know this day, at least this year.
