Tributes to Pallavi VENKATARAMA IYER (Born 4 September 1915- Died 25 August 2006)

Tributes to Pallavi VENKATARAMA IYER (Born 4 September 1915- Died 25 August 2006) noted Flautist & father of Flute Mali, on his Birth Centenary today.

28fr_Pallavi_Venka_2525589e.jpg

Venkatarama Iyer's scholarship was comparable to any of the senior stalwarts of his period. Even minutes before his departure, he was enthusiastically talking to his son about music and musicians.

A senior flute vidwan S. Venkatarama Iyer passed away on August 25, this year, at the ripe age of 91. Till the very last moment his mental faculties were sharp and alert and even minutes before his departure, he was enthusiastically talking to his son about music and musicians. He was a well-respected musician among the members of the musical fraternity, for his deep laya knowledge and expertise in conceptualising pallavis in intricate talas and executing them to perfection. This prompted Pallavi Narasimhachariyar, to refer to Iyer as "Pallavi Venkatarama Iyer".

Born to Subramaniam and Kuppammal in Salem, he had his initial vocal training under Salem Duraiswamy Iyengar, who was the disciple of the redoubtable Ramanathapuram Srinivasa Iyengar. Venkatarama Iyer was a private income tax practitioner and did not take to music as a profession. But his scholarly musicianship was comparable to any of the senior stalwarts of his period. At the age of 20, he began his apprenticeship on the flute under Salem Venupillai and developed his performing skills to professional levels.

The inimitable Mali was much impressed with Venkatarama Iyer's knowledge, approach and forthright views. He was a great admirer of Nadaswaram maestro, T.N. Rajarathinam Pillai and his association with him for four years, honed his elaboration of raga alapanas. TNR's Todi remained Iyer's favourite till the end.He was awarded `Kalaimamani' by the Tamil Nadu Government and `Acharya Choodamani' by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha. Ramani's Academy of flute honoured him for his contribution to music for more than five decades.

Passion for music

He was highly appreciative of young talent and when he spotted commendable potential in youngsters he voluntarily helped them with his mature musical guidance for improving their standards.Guruvayur Durai, a senior mridangist, who was closely associated with Venkatarama Iyer for about four and a half decades says that many of the present day musicians have benefited considerably by the guidance given to them on the challenging nuances of pallavi singing. He was also an enthusiastic sportsman being interested in football, tennis and table tennis. He leaves his wife, three sons and a host of admirers and friends.

Mani began performing regularly, at a time when another player of the mridangam, his idol Palghat Mani Iyer, was in his prime. He took further lessons – under the tutelage of Haihara Sharma, after moving to Chennai – and received his first national award at the age of 18 from the thenPresident of India, Radhakrishnan. For the next four decades, he declined scores of prestigious awards that were offered to him, until 1999 when he accepted the national award from "Sangeeth Natak Academy". This was presented by the President of India at the time, K. R. Narayanan.

In 1986, he started an ensemble, called Sruthi Laya, that combined melody and percussion. Three years later, he founded the Sruthi Laya Seva School that now has centres at Chennai, Bangalore, Australia, London, US, and Canada.

Ranjan was born Ramanarayana Venkataramana Sarma in Mylapore, Madras in 1918. His family hailed from the town of Srirangam. Ranjan had his schooling in Madras and received an M.Litt degree from Madras University. While studying in college, he participated in a number of stageplays. Coincidentally, an employee of Gemini Studios Veppattur Kittu was present at one of his plays.

Impressed by Ranjan's performance, Kittu suggested his name to P. G. Raghavachari who cast him in the M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar-starrer Ashok Kumar in which he played the role of Gautama Buddha. However, Ranjan did not have any dialogues to mouth in the film. Following the success of Ashok Kumar Ranjan was cast in Rishyasringar in which he played the title role of Rishyasringa. In his early movies, Ranjan was credited as "R. Ramani, B. A." The screen name "Ranjan" was actually bestowed upon him by Jithen Banerjee of Newtone Studios.

In the 1940s, Ranjan established a School of Music and Dancing, and edited an art journal entitled, Natyam. He was also awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship under the International Art Program sponsored by the Institute of International Education, New York, in 1950-51. Though Ranjan acted in a number of Bollywood movies, especially costume dramas and some social movies in the 1950s, his star faded by the end of the 1950s. He is best known for his roles in 'Madari', 'Bahut Din Hue', 'Suvarn Sundari', 'Nishan', 'Magic Carpet', 'Chor Chor', Chor Ho To Aisa'. His come-back attempt in Tamil movies also flopped without much opportunities to show case his talents.

Ranjan died of cardiac arrest at a New Jersey hotel on September 12, 1983. He was sixty-five years old at that time.

Wishing KRISH (Born 12 September 1977)

Wishing KRISH (Born 12 September 1977)

Wishing KRISH (Born 12 September 1977) Krish is an Indian Singer and Actor who has worked on Tamil and Telugu language films, on his Birthday today.. After beginning his career as a playback singer, he has subsequently also appeared in films as an actor.

275px-Singer-Krish.jpg

Krish was born in the town of Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu but shifted to New York after his father, a banker, had moved abroad on a posting. He thus shifted schools and spent 15 years in the USA. During his time in New York, Krish worked as an assistant on the sets of the The Cosby Show and National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2004), helping the teams conduct pre-production works. He also completed an acting course at the New York Film Academy and performed at the Broadway in a Walt Disney production of Aladdin, before arriving in Chennai, hoping to get a breakthrough in the industry as an actor.

During the initial months of his return to Chennai, Krish participated in stage shows and cultural events as a singer and was recruited by composer Ganesh Kumar to sing a western song for an album. Ganesh subsequently passed over Krish's details to music composer Harris Jayaraj. Krish then made his playback singing debut in Tamil films by rendering the song "Manjal Veiyil" from Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006), composed by Harris Jayaraj, alongside Hariharan. He consequently collaborated with the composer on several other critically acclaimed songs including "June Ponal July Kaatru" from Unnale Unnale (2007), "Sakiyae" from Dhaam Dhoom, "Oru Mugamo" from Bheema and "Adiye Kolluthey" from Vaaranam Aayiram (2008). His work saw him garner multiple Filmfare Award nominations, as well secure a Vijay Award for Best Singer. He has also featured as a lyricist, penning two songs for the romantic comedy Kandaen (2011).

Film-makers from the Tamil film industry had offered Krish roles as an actor in their ventures, but he was insistent that he would only portray the lead role. He turned down the opportunity from K. V. Anand to play the well-received supporting role portrayed by Ajmal in Ko (2011), though later played a small role as himself in a song from the film. Producer Ibrahim Rowther spotted Krish in the "Aga Naga" song and offered him the chance of portraying the lead role in his production, Puriyatha Anantham Puthithaga Aarambam. The film, a romantic love story featuring him alongside Srushti Dange, began shoot in late 2012 but was only released in June 2015. The film had a low key opening, and garnered negative reviews. In June 2015, he also released an independent six-track music album, with compositions by Vijay Ebenezer and videos featuring Nikesha Patel. He had worked alongside Ebenezer for two years for the project, with the song "Maaya" from the album being heavily promoted.

Krish married actress Sangeetha at a private ceremony at Annamalaiyar Temple in Tiruvannamalai on 1 February 2009. The pair's daughter was born in December 2012.

M.S. Subbulakshmi birth centenary: Tribute to a legend

M.S. Subbulakshmi birth centenary: Tribute to a legend

September 6, 2015

Great-grand daughter to pay homage to MS.

Aspecial musical homage will be paid to Carnatic icon M.S. Subbulakshmi on September 15 at her ancestral home in Madurai — by none other than her great-granddaughter, Bengaluru-based S. Aishwarya.

The event, to be held at Hanumantharayan Koil Street in Madurai, will mark the commencement of MS’ birth centenary celebrations. The legend’s birthday falls on September 16.

“It’s an honour that my daughter Aishwarya is getting to flag off the event. That someone in the family is able to pay a musical homage to the Bharat Ratna is in itself a blessing,” says Aishwarya’s father V. Shrinivasan, son of Radha Vishwanathan (MS’ daughter).

Aishwarya will take part in two concerts at Madurai for the Sadguru Sangeetha Samajam. On September 14, she will sing at the Lakshmi Sundaram Hall (6 p.m.) and on 15 (8 a.m.) at MS’ birthplace with an informal rendering of MS’ popular and favourite pieces,” Mr. Shrinivasan said.

‘A role model’

Nineteen-year-old Aishwarya, a third-year BA student, has learnt nearly 500 kritis from her grandmother Radha Vishwanathan, who accompanied MS for five decades on stage. “Most of the kritis I taught Aishwarya bear the signature MS-stamp and our guru Semmangudi-Paatantaram. I wanted to keep the authentic versions going on in the family. So I have been teaching Aishwarya the MS-baani and telling her that not only in her singing, but in her bhakthi and humility towards life and music, MS-amma is worthy of emulation,” says Ms. Radha.

Aishwarya, performing for eight years now, seems both excited and nervous ahead of her homage concerts.

“At MS’ ancestral home, I thought it befitting to take up her first Tamil hit, Maragatha Vadivum in Chenchurutti ragam, as this was the first song MS had recorded for India as a 10-year-old,” says Aishwarya. This high-pitched song is said to be recorded in 1926 on Vinyl Disc by the Twin Recording Company, accompanied by her mother Madurai Shanmukhavadivu on the veena.

What Aishwarya cannot forget is MS’ emotional response when she as a seven-year-old sang Bhavayami Gopala Balam in front of her in 2002. With tears rolling down her cheeks, MS had said: “This girl will take my name across!” Aishwarya says she will take up this kriti of Annamacharya and a Meera Bhajan, Baso More Naiyan Mein, apart from Maithreem Bhajatha.”

Interview of MS by Mani Krishnaswami

Interview of MS by Mani Krishnaswami

Sruti Magazine, Issue 144, Sep 1996

Sruti requested Sangeeta Kalanidhi MANI KRISHNASWAMI to interview Sangeeta Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi for this special feature. After greeting MS, she asked eight questions and at the end asked for the blessings of MS and her husband T. Sadasivam.

interview-of-ms-by-manikrishnaswami.jpg

Sruti offers you respectful felicitations on your birthday.

Our grateful thanks to Sruti and its readers for their affectionate felicitations to Mama and me on our birthdays. You know he is completing 94 on 15 September, according to the Indian calendar.

Do you remember when you gave your first recital?

When I was 10 years old, I was asked to sing at the wedding of a Saurashtra friend of the family in Madurai. As a little girl I was naturally shy, but also thrilled to be the centre of attraction amidst the glitter of bright lights on that occasion.

Can you name the great masters who inspired you?

My mother, of course, but other great maha vidwans like Sree Dakshinamurthy Pillai have also been a source of inspiration to me from my childhood.

What according to you are essential in an artist to become a success professionally?

Humility and the attitude to learn at any stage of our life.

What should an artist avoid?

Controversy with contemporaries.

Can you say a few words about Sadasivam Mama's role in your musical career?

He has been everything for me since I came under his influence.
Here Mama intervenes and says: "Some people think that it was because of my vast contacts in public life, Subbulakshmi shot into fame. It is absolutely wrong. I restricted my role to shaping the quality of her music and talent. It was just by the sheer merit of her own art and personality, not to speak of her rigorous practice, that Kunjammal came up the ladder of fame. Even today at 80 she practises music like a young student for at least three hours every day.

Will you say something about the great accompanists you have had in your career?

Violin giants like Mysore T. Chowdiah, Tiruvalangadu Sundaresa Iyer and mridanga masters like T.K. Murthy have accompanied me in my concerts. Once in a private concert, the late Palakkad Mani Iyer played the mridangam for me and, on another occasion, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar played the violin when the scheduled artist did not turn up on time. Young artists like R.K.Sriramkumar (violin), and K.V.Prasad (mridangam) are accompanying me in my concerts now. They all had and have their good points about them. None of them has been a hindrance to me on the platform or outside. I always cherish happy memories about them.

Present-day musicians, especially the younger ones, are talented no doubt, but do you agree that it would be useful and in their interest if they listen to the music of the stalwarts of the past?

Nothing can be forced on anyone now, like in the past. The youngsters in the field of music seem to know much more on any subject than what we knew when we were their age. I think, on their own, they do listen to the music of their seniors with a discerning attitude. It is enough if they analysed and assessed themselves thoroughly and identified the strong points and individual characteristics of the stalwarts and did everything to develop them without of course compromising tradition and quality.

What is your advice to present-day musicians, especially lady artists?

I feel I am not that experienced to give advice to anyone, however young they are. But with the advantage of my advanced age I may say that our lady artists should not lose their identity of Indian womanhood, however famous they become in the field. As you will agree, there is no substitute for humility and hard work.

Personally I need your blessings and that of Mama ....

Blessings of Lord Balaji are there on you both in abundance, to which we add our prayerful good wishes.
