Kriti in Begada Ragam, set to Rupaka Talam, composed by Subbaraya Shastri and sung by Sri Voleti Venkateswarulu.

Tributes to VOLETI VENKATESWARULU (b: August 27, 1928 - December 29, 1989) one of the most prominent Carnatic Classical Musicians of the 20th century, on his Birth Anniversary today.. Born in Rajahmundry, he learnt music initially for 10 years from Sri Munuganti Venkata Rao Pantulu of Kakinada, and later underwent exclusive training for 3 years under Dr. Sripada Pinakapani.

Born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, he began his musical journey at the age of five. Voleti had his initial training from Chaturvedula Achutaramaiah Sastry and achieved Swaragnanam under Munuganti Venkat Rao Pantulu of Kakinada. He later graduated in music from Andhra University. Under the guidance of Sangita Kalanidhi Dr. SriPada Pinakapani he refined his style. Dr. Pani had said "He was a disciple of mine all right, but what a genius! You can describe him as one of the best musicians of Andhra ever. I wonder whether we will ever get another musician like that".

He served as a producer of Carnatic music at All India Radio, Vijayawada from 1966 onwards. Amongst his various contributions, his music lesson programs and Bhakthiranjani were prominently appreciated by the listeners.

Voleti's music is unique in the field of Carnatic music. While his style represented the Carnatic South Indian classical music tradition, it had elements of the Hindustani music North Indian classical music as well. He used to receive tremendous response from rasikas connoisseurs of Carnatic music while singing Ragaalapana.

As a result of intense practice during his younger days, a tremendous knowledge of swaras and felicity in singing, Sri Voleti also excelled in the Hindustani style to such an extent that he could please famous Hindustani musicians such as Bade Gulam Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, Gulam Ali etc.
Voleti possessed the finest qualities of musical ability: to sing with ease in three octaves, with absolutely pure sruthi and perfect laya.
Voleti Venkateswarulu was an uncompromising singer and a teacher.

If there's one epithet that describes the music of this man, it is `sublime'. With body and soul immersed in music, Voleti Venkateswarulu would enthral listeners with an exquisitely melodious voice, which negotiated all three octaves with effortless ease, revealing perfect purity of shruti, and masterly grip on laya and bhava. Described by some as a `rishi' of music, he would, while singing, seem oblivious to the audience, and in direct communion with God, soaked in `Naadaanandam'. Voleti was born in Rajahmundry on August 27, 1928 and died December 29, 1989.

After training under Chaturvedula Achutramaiah Shastry, Munuganti Venkata Rao Pantulu and graduating in music from Andhra University, he came under the legendary Sripada Pinakapani's tutelage. Voleti was a gem. Both as a musician and a person. So much learning, so much talent, yet so simple and unassuming... ," recalls Sripada. And as Nedunuri Krishnamurthi says, Voleti was a musician who set for himself and maintained the highest standards. "He had unlimited swaragyanam and was a creative genius in raagam." As a teacher, Voleti did yeoman public service through his radio Sangeeta Sikshana programmes. This and his Bhaktiranjani are etched in people's memories for their style and substance.

Malladi Suribabu who played the tanpura for Voleti during the warming-up session for Shikshana programmes recalls how Voleti would, then, spontaneously break into Hindustani ragas for the sheer enjoyment of it. "He loved Hindustani swaras and their jaaru gamakas." One of those rare Carnatik musicians also adept in Hindustani,

Voleti's admirers included Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan and Ghulam Ali Khan. M.S. Gopalakrishnan and Lalgudi Jayaraman were Voleti's admirers-cum-friends. Whenever Voleti came for his Chennai performances, the tanpura would come from Jayaraman's house. Jayaraman recalls how he and Voleti would discuss music endlessly, even sing to each other.

"Voleti had the wonderful ability to lose himself in his music and enjoy it as a third person. I composed a thillana in Pahadi at his request. He was a childlike person and always gracious with his accompanists." Voleti also rendered, memorably, compositions rarely heard at kutcheris today like Adhyatma Ramayana keerthanas; Sadhashiva Brahmendra krithis; Narayanatheertha tharangams.

There's great need to retrieve these and release re-recordings. Though Voleti's music moved critics and connoisseurs to praise, no desire for fame and money seemed to move the man himself. Like so many artistes who focused on their art alone, he died leaving his family in difficult financial conditions.

Tributes to N S KRISHNAN,.(29 November 1908 - 30 August 1957) real name Nagercoil Sudalaimuthu Krishnan, popularly known as Kalaivanar and also as NSK,a leading Nagercoil Tamil film comedian, drama artist, playback singer and writer in the early stages of the Tamil film industry – in the 1940s and 1950s.on his Death Anniversary today. He is considered as the "Charlie Chaplin of India.", .

Born in Ozhuginachery, Nagercoil, in the princely state of Travancore, India on 29 November 1908, his stage and cine-screen comedy performances were unique and always carried a message for the people. 'Kalaivanar' N. S. Krishnan died at the age of 49, on 30 August 1957.

N S Krishnan started his career as a Villu Paatu artist (the Tamil way of reciting stories while singing songs and playing a musical instrument in the form of a bow called 'Villu'), He later became involved in Tamil drama and stage shows, as were many film artistes. At one time he owned a touring drama company. When cinema gradually became popular in South India, he entered the Tamil film world to become one of the leading Tamil comedians ever, with a unique style. He generally wrote his own comedy dialogues and expressed them in his drama and films so that the message came across, but the subject was not offended.

He acted in nearly 150 Tamil films and the matinee-duo of N S Krishnan and T. A. Madhuram (later his wife) was very popular in his days; he also did roles along with leading stage and cine artists like T. S. Durairaj, Pulimootai Ramasamy, C.S. Pandian and writers like Udumalai Narayana Kavi and Subbu Armugham and gave a number of hits. He was a talented singer and his hits include Sivakavi, Raja Rani, and Manamagal.

Though he was more popular among the Tamil populace as a film comedian, Kalaivanar was instrumental in bringing a number of leading Tamil stage and film personalities to the fore. He was a Gandhian, patriot and philanthropist, yet a very controversial figure — with his name linked to a murder and marital controversies.

He was married to actress T. A. Madhuram. His grandson NSK Rajan has acted in a film Nagareega Komaali (2006).

Her granddaughters Anu Vardhan and Ramya NSK are working as costume designer and playback singer in film industry respectively

There are some stories that are evergreen and cannot but entertain a discerning audience. The life story of saint composer Sri Thyagaraja is one such.

Artists have time and again told the story through films and dance dramas. This time it is the turn of theatre. T. V. Varadharajen’s United Visuals has joined hands with music critic and writer V. Srinivasan and renowned Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri Ramnath to tell the great composer’s story through a musical drama.

Recently, the actors including Mr. Varadharajan who will be playing the part of Sri Thyagaraja, the writer and Ms. Ramnath took part in a script-reading session. “The script is so beautifully woven that for every situation there is a song. I am just going to highlight those krithis. The whole point in this exercise is to have hummable songs,” said Ms. Ramnath, who herself has been part of a theatre group for several years in Mumbai.

“I have acted and sung in a group that did English, Hindi and Tamil plays,” added the musician who will be recording the songs for short durations and the back ground music so that the troupe can carry the music wherever they travel.

This will be United Visuals’ 17{+t}{+h}production and it is to be staged on December 1, said Mr. Varadharajen, who is already learning to lip sync to the songs, learning to handle the tanpura and also the ragas and wordings of the songs.

“When VSV Sir first suggested the idea I didn’t know if it could be made into a story. But when I read his book on Sri Thyagaraja I could find a lovely dramatic element in it. The relationship between the composer and his brother is so full of drama. Our troupe will travel to Thiruvaiyar next month and then start the formal rehearsals,” he said.

Mr. Srinivasan, who was formerly executive editor of Ananda Vikatan and is popular in music circles as just VSV, has written the script and screen play based on his biographical work on the Saint.

“Thyagaraja’s story is marked by human emotions. This play is an approach to his music through his life story,” said the author who is very excited to see the drama take shape.
