What is she looking for

Some undisturbed personal working space.
It must be me longing for peace and quiet!!!!

I do not want any unrelated posts in my threads devoted to serious topics.

I am posting my #1. Rocks, minerals and gemstones again here and

hope to get an uninterrupted passage to the end of the thread -

allowing ONLY doubts/ comments related to THIS topic in this thread.

ANYTHING UNRELATED will be reported immediately and will be deleted.

This is the last word of warning to those who never seem to learn from gentle suggestions.

#1. Minerals, Rocks and Gemstones.

A mineral is a naturally occurring substance that is solid and stable at room temperature. It has an ordered atomic structure and is representable by a chemical formula. A rock can be an aggregate of minerals or non-minerals, and does not have a specific chemical composition.

The exact definition of a mineral is under debate, especially with respect to the requirement a valid species be abiogenic, and to a lesser extent with regards to it having an ordered atomic structure. Mineralogy is the study of minerals.

There are over 4,900 known mineral species; over 4,660 of these have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association ( I.M.A ).

Over 90% of the Earth's crust is composed of Silicate minerals. The diversity and abundance of mineral species is controlled by the Earth's chemistry. Silicon and oxygen constitute approximately 75% of the Earth's crust, which translates directly into the predominance of silicate minerals.

Chemical and Physical properties distinguish the minerals. Chemical composition and crystal structure distinguish the various species. These properties are influenced by the mineral's geological environment of formation. Changes in the temperature, pressure, and bulk composition of a rock mass cause changes in its mineralogy. When the temperature and pressure change, its mineralogy changes as well.

Minerals can be described by their physical properties, which relate to its chemical structure and composition. Crystal structure, habit, hardness, luster, whether or not it is diaphanous, color, streak, tenacity, cleavage, fracture, parting and specific gravity are the common distinguishing characteristics. Reaction to acid, magnetism, taste, smell and radioactivity are the more advanced tests.

Minerals are classified by key chemical constituents. Silicates, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates and naive elements are the important mineral groups.

Nearly five months after police say his wife set him on fire in their apartment in Austin-Texas, a 29-year-old Bimal Patel died on Saturday 9 Sept 2012, in a San Antonio hospital.

Bimal Patel died at the burn center of San Antonio Military Medical Center on Saturday (9 Sept 2012) as result of injuries he suffered in April. Investigators anticipate filing murder charges on Patel’s wife, Shriya Patel, who has been jailed since the incident.

On April 17, police arrived at Patel's apartment to find him severely burned andlying on the floor. Investigators believe Shriya Patel lured her husband into thebath tub for a massage, poured gasoline on him and then lit him on fire and locked him in the bathroom. Investigators suspect Shriya removed a smoke detector in the apartment and covered up sprinklers mounted on the ceiling. She is accused of locking her husband inside the bathroom, which he had to kick down in order to escape.

#2. Minerals, Rocks and Gemstones.

Basic definition of a mineral

The general definition of a mineral encompasses the following criteria

1. Naturally occurring

2. Stable at room temperature

2. Represented by a chemical formula
3. Usually abiogenic

4. Ordered atomic arrangement

The first three general characteristics are less debated than the last two.

The first criterion means that a mineral has to form by a natural process, which excludes anthropogenic compounds.

Stability at room temperature, in the simplest sense, is synonymous to the mineral being solid at 25°C. Classical examples of exceptions to this rule include native mercury which crystallizes at -39°C, and water ice, which is solid only below 0°C.

Modern advances have included extensive study of liquid crystals, which also extensively involve mineralogy. Minerals are chemical compounds, and as such they can be described by fixed or a variable formula. Many mineral groups and species are composed of a solid solution; pure substances are not usually found because of contamination or chemical substitution.

The formal definition of a mineral approved by the IMA in 1995:
A mineral is an element or chemical compound that is normally crystalline and that has been formed as a result of geological processes.
In addition, biogenic substances were explicitly excluded. "Biogenic substances are chemical compounds produced entirely by biological processes without a geological component (e.g., urinary calculi, oxalate crystals in plant tissues, shells of marine mollusks, etc.) and are not regarded as minerals. However, if geological processes were involved in the genesis of the compound, then the product can be accepted as a mineral.

To put it in a nutshell...

All gemstones are minerals

but all minerals are not gemstones.

All minerals are rocks but

all rocks are not minerals!

why the drinking water which are sold in jars are called mineral water? Even when we dine in hotels they ask us whether we need mineral water or ordinary water?

Dear SR Ji

I think term 'Mineral Water' is just used colloquially to refer to purified, packaged water
to differentiate it from tap water.

Originally, water from naturally occurring springs - supposedly with therapeutic effects
was referred to as 'Mineral Water'

With people all over the world becoming more aware of water-borne diseases, purified ground
water, conforming to certain Health Standards is termed 'Mineral Water'. The labels should
read something like :" RO Processed, UV Treated, Packaged Water ".

Colloquial usage Mineral Water - just like the common shopkeeper referring to Iodized,
table salt as 'Salt' and ordinary crystalline sea salt as "Uppu / Kal Uppu".

I hope I got it right !

dear friends!
I have launched a blog A to Z Gemstones in
Adam to Zeus blog in wordpress.com.
In the event future disturbance in this thread,
I will stop posting those articles here and
post them in my wordpress blog straight away.
This is just for your information. :)

Dear Ananda manohar sir, thanks for your clarification. In fact, ordinary water if it is a natural water available in rivers like ganges is better than so called mineral water. When I visited varanasi the boat man told me that the ganges water if it is sealed in a pot or bottle, it never gets contaminated for years. whereas, the so called mineral water has some expiry date even if the bottle is not open.

There are quite a large number of brands of bottled water sold in the market. Some have the seal of certifying agency and the rest don't have anything. God knows what type of water is filled in those bottles and sold as mineral water to the unsuspecting consumers.

Dear Sadasivam Ji

Your post # 1540. You are absolutely correct. Most of the stuff available in shops is bogus. That is precisely
the reason that I installed a domestic RO plant at home 10 years ago - upgraded to RO + UV three years back.
I closely watch the TDS levels [ Totally Dissolved Salts ] and have the filters and membranes changed frequently.
I haven't so far come across a domestic Ozonizing system.

Would like to further upgrade to RO + UV + O3.

Yay Yem

We know that most of the stuffs available in shops is bogus still we cannot carry water with us wherever we go. We have to depend on water available in bottles and sachets. Especially in summer we need water every one hour when we travel long distance in the hectic heat. In Kolkata water in sachets (plastic pockets) are totally banned and we have to purchase one ltr. pet bottle only. In fact the bottled drinks in Kolkata are not dependable.

Selling of water is a good business these days and in Cities like Chennai, many
have no choice but to buy drinking water in Cans. One may not know from where
water is brought and whether it is a treated one or not. As against a single house
those days, in the same place, there are multiple story apartments and the usages
have increased multifold. In some places bore wells do not fetch water as the
water level has appreciably been at the bottom. Water is an important life
saving item just like a medicine and no one will be able to avoid from buying.
Because, it is essential to everyone for survival including animals/plants.

It is really very sad to see that we have to pay for pure drinking water which as a old timer I have not even imagined of such a state during my young age.Perhaps who knows a day may come when one has to pay for pure air for breathing.

Dear Sir,
we already have O3 parlours in chennai ( may be in other cities also)where in pure air is available at per hour rate.... for sitiing in a room...
Cheers.

Dear Bala Sir, Sadasivam Ji

SS Ji - your post # 1544

I personally think that this is an old problem. See the pictorial of Saints - from Sri Agastya to Kanchi Maha Periyva,
they are always portrayed with a Kamandalam - I guess they knew about water-borne diseases and therefore
the importance of carrying their own Theertham !

The Kamandalam just became PET bottles with which modern man cannot do without.

My other guess is that Pranayaamam [ Breath Control ] too might have been designed by Great Yogis/
Maharishis to minimize the intake of polluted air into the lungs. Going away into forests and obscure places
to meditate must've been a way of getting away from the inherent ills of urban living.

'Far from the Madding Crowd' - as it were.

Yay Yem

According to population studies in about 50/75 years man will not have space to stand on it. Maybe in that eventuality we may have to pay parking charges and worse, congestion charges (apart from being affected by IPC 144). You are already paying for communicating in the air, and so on.

sir, in Kolkata we are consuming water conataining orsan or orsanic water through aquaguard. Getting good drinking water (water cans) or jar sis a problem here.
