Dear Tmt VR

I have since sent the report & recommendations of Jadavpur University to Sri S Ramanathan
with a request that he take it on from here.

Now, talking about orthodoxy - Yes Madam, there still are such people. Year 2010, I was travelling back
from New York to Chennai [ you know the flight time ] and was sat next to a Mami , who wouldn't even
take bottled drinking water from the hostess - 22 hours and not even a drop of water - I thought that
was carrying Achaaram too far.

What made things worse for me was that I couldn't enjoy my drinks, sitting alongside a lady who
voluntarily chose to remain famished and dessicated - all the way to my home town !

Yes, I have a way of getting myself into lousy situations.

Yay Yem

Dear AM Ji,

But I thought orthodox people do not cross the sea..the fact that the Mami was crossing the sea flying in an aeroplane showed she was not all that orthodox.

May be she does not like to drink water..I have seen some people who hardly drink water.

Another possible diagnosis in an elderly lady is Urinary Incontinence.

People with Urinary Incontinence severely restrict water intake during travel cos frequently going to restroom during flight will be difficult and if mami was wearing a saree I can understand that it would be harder too.

If person consumes water, then only vyavaharam comes.
Strictly speaking the concept of acharam was evolved by our great
Acharyas. One may question as to whether it has any relevance today. Yes
it has in some quarters. Secondly another question arises, as to whether
one can accept only a part of it and not in full, then a doubt arises as to how
one would decide as to what to accept and what to reject. There is a quote
from Vyasa Bhagawan that Achara Prathamo Dharma; Dharmasya Prabhu Achuta.
Another instance to watch is Swami Vivekananda in one of his books mentioned
that the word Acharam means cleanliness. At the same time, he also mentions
that the same terminology Acharam forms part of two interpretations i.e. by Adi
Sankara and Shri Ramanuja. While Adi Sankara emphasizes about the mental purity
which is essential to learn Vedas Shri Ramanuja says that one needs both mental
purity as well as physical cleanliness. Shri Ramanuja stresses on physical cleanliness
as the primary step towards Spirituality. Shri Ramanuja also says that physical
cleanliness would guide to mental purity. It is difficult to change the people of
olden days. My mother and grand mother would survive even two days without
consuming anything even now when they are out from the house.

Dear sir,

To a certain extent it is just pure logic.
If I am in a place where I am doubtful of the cleanliness..no matter how hungry I am I will not eat cos I do not want to land up with any infection and fall sick.

So when the mind tunes off..body won't feel hungry or thirsty.

But sometimes some people become obsessive and then it poses a problem.

When I had a maid in my house..I used to drink what she makes for me but never used to allow her to prepare anything for my son cos I want a person making anything for my son to have love in her mind.

I can not read her thoughts so I rather do it myself.

I am an adult..so no matter what she is thinking while making my drink is fine cos adults can handle anything.

A child is growing up so external influences of thoughts and deeds of others are important.

I do not know how some woman leave everything to the maid to handle.

I only allow family members and in laws to deal with my son.

But I do not hurt my maid's feelings in the process..I will tell her "why don't you take a break and let me prepare the drink for my son"

Dear Renu

Nah! I met with her son, D-in-L & G Kids at JFK, while checking in. The son specifically requested me
to goad her into eating / drinking something on board the flight.

Upon touch-down at Chennai I called my son, who was already there at the airport and told
him to bring a bottle of water. Mami was still hesitant and finally budged only when told that it
was from 'home'! [ she didn't notice my son breaking the seal ] .

On the flight too, I tried all the tricks up my sleeve - but she was very strong in her resolve.

It was like the song "Oorvasi oorvasi ........ Pakkathu Seatilay Patti Utkardhaal ....... " . Prabhu Deva's number
was supposed to appeal to young men - not be applicable to a Thatha, like me !

No, Manohar Kumar Ji, I didn't miss a thing - just that I had to do things " Chori Chori, Chipke Chipke "
- had to take the flight crew into confidence and it felt like the days when I was in school when we
used to keep one boy ' watch duty ' while we smoked in the toilets / behind bushes. And when I got tired of
getting up often, applied the " Pre-Mix " technique - that's an Indian's Jugaad !

MK Ji, thanks for sympathizing with me - I hope such a thing never happens to you.

Oh! There are several situations that I have gotten myself into - sometimes I used to wonder whether
the movie ' Nothing But Trouble ', was made from narrations of episodes in my life !

Generally Brahmins before eating food do pariseshanam and then eat to avoid ill effects of eating the food.

Dear Sri Ramanatha Ji

I sent you the complete report only so that you get the entire picture. If you go through it thoroughly,
you will see that the entire area - geographically WB & Bangla Desh, has the problem of Arsenic
contamination - highlighted in the studies of WHO & ICMR.

The remedy - economically viable and eco-sustainable is there in the Report & Recommendations of SOES.

The Report was mailed to you in its entirety only so that you can be cautious and not get conned into
investing and installing something that will not serve its purpose.

All the particulars - telephone numbers, names of concerned personnel is all there.
Please take it on from here - This is not something that only big organisations and NGOs have to work
on - the guidelines are quite clear, and sustainable even in remoter and rural areas.

I sincerely hope this is helpful

Dear SR Ji

True - Parisheshanam has its significance. Christians too say the 'Grace'. But I am sure something
more is required to remove contaminants like Lead, Arsenic etc.

In maharashtrian weddings too, when a full row is filled with guests, everybody is served a 'uddarani' of water, and only after saying a collective prayer and sip, eating starts. Of course major dishes are served in advance and all have to wait.

Dear Ananda Manoharji, Thanks a lot for your efforts and sending a report with in a short span of 24 hrs. I will try to make use of the same. As on date I have not started feeling the effect of arson may be due to consumption of garlic. I have strong faith in Saibaba and he will protect me and my wife from all ill effects.

Did the mami get dehydrated by the time she reached her destination???

Crossing the sea is also forbidden!!

How did she take up the overseas flight???

I sat next to one Palghat mami in shorts and T shirt who managed to remain

high both in the altitude and spiritually throughout the long journey

drinking nothing but red wine!!!

As far lousy situations ... the least said, the better! :)

I do not include onion unless it is inevitable as in masala made for puri or dosa.
Onion is tamasic in nature and produces lethargy.
The benefits of garlic is not to be doubted or degraded. :nono:

But Yay Yem Sir, i hope you did not famish like her... This is really pathetic.. Yes i also have a friend who or his family members do not take Onion, leave alone Garlic!!

Cheers!!

post 1571. Thanks VR Madam. For the past 6 months myself and my wife are consuming garlic (9 to 10 pals) every day night after boiling the same in the milk. Now through you I understand that It is helpful in removing arsenic effects from our body. One more thing I want to know whether arson can be removed by boiling the water and whether the pet bottle will be stained with a light blue colour (water stored in pet bottle after the same is purified by e-boiling aquagurad). Shri Anand Manohar has sent the report which may be useful for people who wish to install a water treatment plant in an apartment. The report does not give the specific places where arson is found or the attachments available in the market.

Dear Sir,
You can anything you want to find through the internet.
Continue to use Garlic but also get the water treatment plant
attached to your apartment complex. :)

One famous author drank water in a restaurant in Paris
to prove that it was safe and clean and paid with his life for his folly.

Silver # 1.

The mystery of the strange malady!

Alexander's army was invincible and irrepressible. One victory followed another, as he marched Eastwards with his huge army. Persia, Phoenicia, Egypt, Babylonia and Bactria lay subdued and conquered.

In 327 B.C, his army invaded India. It appeared as if nothing would stop them from a clean sweep over the country. But Divine providence had other plans for the invading army!

A mysterious gastrointestinal disease broke out in the Greek army. Exhausted and tired the army men demanded to be sent back home immediately.

Alexander was forced to turn back much against his wishes and plans. The strangeness about the mysterious disease was that it seemed to affect the common soldiers more severely than the high ranking officials of the army-even though they lived in the same living conditions and shared the same food!

This mystery was unraveled after more than 2000 years by the scientists. What was their finding any way?

Silver # 2.

The great purifier!

The scientists found out that the gastrointestinal disease had affected people of different ranks differently-because while the common soldiers used tin cups for drinking, the high officials had used silver cups!

It was scientifically proved that when silver dissolved in water, it could kill many harmful bacteria. A few thousand-millionth of a gram (1/1000,000,000 gram)
of silver was adequate to purify one liter of drinking water!

Obviously this purifying property of silver had protected the army generals from the severity of the infections, while the common soldiers were denied of that protection.

Small wonder that silver was used to make utensils like dishes, jugs, jars, plates, cups, cutlery which were used to store food and also while eating food.A natural, fool-proof and healthy way of protecting oneself from the invasion of harmful bacteria through food and drinks.

The ancient historian Herodotus has recorded that the Prussian King Cyrus stored his water in sacred silver vessels during his march.A wise king who had taken care of his good health while out on his conquests, I should say!

In India, whit hot silver was immersed in water to purify it. Silver coins are thrown into wells even today during consecration ceremonies.

Now we know why our ancestors used to to eat and drink from silver plates and tumblers.

This explains why the theertham in the temples is always given from a silver bowl.

Surely the pujariji does not want the bhakta falling sick after taking theertham.

Thank you VR Mam for the information. Whether Eating in stainless steel plate for years would harm our health? In one hotel in Kolkatta food is served in plates wherein plantain leave is cut ant prepared as bottom to keep hygine.

As long as the plate is thoroughly washed, preferably in boiling water, eating in ss plates don't cause any health problem. In fact surgical instruments are mostly made of stainless steel and they are repeatedly used after sterilization without any health issue.

In day to day life we are not washing plates in hot water and we wash using pril liquid in running water. We drink coffee/tea in stainless steel tumbler only and all the utensils are washed using pril liquid.

You know sometimes even if we take all the precautions in food, hygiene etc and we can still get knocked by a speeding lorry when we are on the road.

The best thing is just live without worrying too much and maintain a certain degree of hygiene is enough.

Over hygiene causes allergies.
We also must let the body be exposed to some amount of bacteria to build up a defense.

I remember when I was young my mum used to keep the house spotless mopped with Dettol to make sure there is no bacteria and I ended up growing up with severe allergic rhinitis cos my body was just not used to germs.

Over the years after I left home I had to expose myself to not 100% sterile conditions to build my body defense.

Playing in the mud was a strict No No for my mum.
She would be getting all scared if she saw us playing in mud.

So you see being too clean is not all that safe too.

So do not over do anything.

That's why for me I let my son run and play in mud too if he wants and later I give him a bath.

My mum gets so scared to even let my son use tap water to brush his teeth and gives him boiled cooled water instead which I strongly object.

So just live in moderation and nothing can go wrong.
