# 19. SATURN

images

(Courtesy Google images)

Saturn (Saturnus) was a major god presiding over agriculture and the harvest time. His reign was depicted as a Golden Age of abundance and peace by many Roman authors.

In medieval times he was known as the Roman god of strength, agriculture and justice.

He held in his left hand a sickle and a bundle of wheat in his right hand. Terra was his mother and Caelus his father.

He was identified with the Greek God Cronus and the mythologies of the two gods are commonly mixed. Ops, Saturn's wife was the equivalent of Roman Rhea.

Saturn had a temple which contained the Royal Treasury on the Forum Romanum. Saturn is the namesake of both he planet Saturn, and the day Saturday.

In the Roman tradition, Saturnalia, a great feast was held during the winter months - in memory of the golden age when Saturn was supposed to have ruled.

It was originally only one day long, taking place on December 17, but later lasted one week.

During Saturnalia, roles of master and slave were reversed, moral restrictions loosened, and the rules of etiquette ignored. It is thought that the festivals of Lupercalia and Saturnalia were the roots of the Carnival year.

# 20. TERRA

images

Terra or
Tellus was the personification of the Goddess of Earth in Roman mythology. The names Terra Mater and Tellus Mater both mean "Mother Earth"

Mater in Latin is a honorific title also bestowed on other goddesses. Tellurium- a chemical element was named after Tellus in 1798.

Romans appealed to Terra over the earthquakes. Along with Ceres - the grain goddess, she was responsible for the productivity of farmland.

She was also associated with marriage, motherhood, pregnant women, and pregnant animals. Terra's Greek counterpart is Gaia.

The two words Terra and Tellus are thought to derive from the formulaic phrase tersa tellus, meaning "dry land".

Terra refers to the element earth (one of the four basic elements viz earth, air, water, and fire). Tellus refers to the guardian deity of Earth and by extension the globe itself.

Actual classical Latin usage does not necessarily appear to respect this distinction.

A male deity of Earth, Tellumo, was sometimes invoked together with Terra during the rites in her honor

I expected good traffic and an impressive viewer ship in this thread - devoted to non-violence and various Gods.

But surprisingly every post is read by only ~ 20 people in this thread.

That made me ponder and find out a new fact in life.

It is difficult to be nice to people. It takes a lot of conscious effort. But being nasty comes naturally to human beings. :boink:

That explains a lot! Doesn't it?

Just shows that more people are interested in masala dosa rather than sada dosa !!

#308 - That made me ponder and find out a new fact in life.

According to our Purana as, "We live only once, but if we work it right (live according to
our customs and civilization, God fearing concepts, etc.) once certainly is enough. Some
say, Life is not worth living unless one is willing to take some big chances, face consequences,
and so on. But some say Life is like a Candle in the Wind. Thus one concludes the purpose
of a Life , is a life of purpose.

I remember this as if it happened today!

I wonder what he would tell me now - if he were alive today.

As you have rightly pointed put 5 (*) signifies that at least one person likes it. But a hot thread means that many people like it.

# 22. VENUS

images

Venus is a goddess principally associated with love, beauty, fertility, sex and sexual seduction. She played a key role in many festivals and myths of Rome.

The noun form
Venus means "love" and "sexual desire" and has connections to venerari (to honor, to try to please) and venia (grace, favor).

Venus' name might embody the function of honors and gifts to the divine when seeking their favors: such acts can be interpreted as the enticement, seduction or charm of gods by mortals.

Venus was commonly associated with the Greek goddess Aphrodite. As with most other Roman gods and goddesses, the literary concept of Venus is mantled in whole-cloth borrowings Aphrodite.

In some Latin mythology Cupid was the son of Venus and the god of war-Mars. In other times, Venus was understood to be the Vulcan's consort.

My dear Raji,

This the "masala" thread.

What with the semi nude pictures of gods and Goddesses - not to mention the photos of the famous film stars!!!

Believe me they are "all nude" or semi nude. I am selecting the most decent picture available in the web.

# 23. WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
images

William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 – 23 April 1850) was a major English poet who helped to launch the Romantic age in English literature with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in 1798, with the joint publication Lyrical ballads.

"The Prelude" is considered to be Wordsworth's magnum opus. It is a semi autobiographical poem of his early years which he revised and expanded a number of times.

It was posthumously titled and published, prior to which it was generally known as the poem "To Coleridge".

Wordsworth was Britain's Poet Laurette from 1843 until his death in 1850.

The Poet Laurette and his other honors:

Wordsworth received from Durham University an honorary Doctor of Civil Law degree in 1838 and the same honor from Oxford University the next year.

In 1842 the government awarded him a civil list pension amounting to £300 a year. With the death in 1843 of Robert Southey, Wordsworth became the Poet Laureate.

He initially refused the honor, saying he was too old, but accepted when Prime Minister Robert Peel assured him "you shall have nothing required of you"

He became the only laureate to write no official poetry. When his daughter, Dora, died in 1847, his production of poetry came to a standstill.

I wanted to add more gods and I have in fact found out the names of 69 more Greek Gods. But the poor response to the thread deters me.

I will use the info to discuss about the mentality of men and women - since man projects his own mentality on the Gods he creates!

A good collection and presentation to those interested.
