# 11. KALKI

kalki.gif

Kalki ( कल्कि) is the tenth and final great incarnation of Vishnu- who will descend in order to end the present age of darkness and destruction known as KALI YUGA.

The name Kalki is often a metaphor for Eternity or time. The origins of the name probably lie in the Sanskrit word "kalka" which refers to mud, dirt, filth, or foulness and hence denotes the "destroyer of foulness," "destroyer of confusion," "destroyer of darkness," or "annihilator of ignorance.

Other similar and divergent interpretations based on varying etymological derivations from Sanskrit - (including one simply meaning "White Horse") have been made.

Hindu traditions permit numerous interpretations of what avatars are and to what purpose they act. Avatara means "descent" and indicates a descent of the divine awareness into manifestations of the mundane form. The Garuda lists ten avatars -with Kalki being the tenth.

Popular images depict him riding a white horse with wings known as Devadatta (God-given). In these images, Kalki is brandishing a sword in his left hand and is intent on eradicating the kali yuga's corrupt destitution and debauchery.

The Kalki Purana combines all of the elements from the puranas above. He is one who has power to change the course of time stream in the favor of the good. He will be one to whom the power to change the destiny of the world will be given.

It states the evil family of the demon Kali will spring from the back of Brahma. They will descend to earth and cause mankind to turn towards depravity. When man stops offering yagna to the gods, lord Vishnu himself will descend to earth to rid the world of evil.

He will be reborn as Kalki to noted Brahmin's family in the city of Shambhala. As a young man, He will be mentored in the arts of war by Parasurama - the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. He will then set out across the world battling evil kings and false prophets.

He finally defeat Kali and bring about the Satya Yuga. Having completed His mission, He will assume his four-armed form and return to heaven as Vishnu.

# 12. LAKSHMI DEVI.

In Hinduism both the gods and the demons were mortal at one time. The divine nectar that would grant immortality, could be obtained only by churning the Ksheera sagaram.

The devas and asuras both sought immortality and decided to churn the Ksheera sagaram. With the devas on one side and the asuras on the other, the churning commenced.

On Kurma, the tortoise, was placed a mountain as a churning pole; Vasuki a great venomous serpent, was wrapped around it and used to churn the ocean.

A host of divine celestial objects came up during the churning. Among these, was the goddess Lakshmi, the daughter of the king of the milky ocean.

The last to come up was the Amrita. With this, the avatar of Kurma, the tortoise, ended. Vishnu then took up the form of a beautiful maiden to distract the asuras and gave immortality to the devas.

Mahalakshmi has always existed. Her appearance from the milk ocean is her main manifestation.

Mahalakshmi was also born to the great sage Bhrigu and she is therefore also called Bhargavi.

Mahalakshmi is also the sister of the great guru Sukracharya and the moon. The moon also appeared from the ocean during the churning, making it her brother.

Lakshmi has many names. She is known to be very closely associated with the lotus, and her many epithets are connected to the flower, such as:

  • Kamala: lotus dweller
  • Padmapriya: One who likes lotuses
  • Padmamaladhara devi: One who wears a garland of lotuses
  • Padmamukhi: One whose face is as beautiful as a lotus
  • Padmakshi: One whose eyes are as beautiful as a lotus
  • Padmahasta: One who holds a lotus
  • Padmasundari: One who is as beautiful as a lotus
Her other names include: Manushri, Chakrika, Kamalika, Lalima, Kalyani, Nandika, Rujula, Vaishnavi, Narayani, Bhargavi, Sridevi, Chanchala, Bhumi Devi, Jalaja, Madhavi, Sujata, Shreya and Aiswarya. She is also referred to as Jaganmaatha ("Mother of the Universe") in Shri Mahalakshmi Ashtakam. Rama and Indira are popular.

Each time Vishnu descends on earth as an avatar, He is accompanied by an avatar of Lakshmi.
