# 13. MINERVA.

images

Minerva was the goddess of wisdom, war, art, schools and commerce. She was the Etruscan counterpart to Athena of Greece.

Like Athena, Minerva was born from the head of her father, Jupiter (Greek Zeus).

Tinia, Uni and Minerva formed the holy triad equivalent to the Jupiter-Juno-Minerva the Roman Capitoline triad. Minerva was the daughter of Jupiter.

As Minerva Medica, she was the goddess of medicine and doctors.

Minerva was worshiped throughout Italy, though only in Rome did she take on the warlike character shared by Athena.

Her worship was also taken out to the empire — in Britain, for example, she was conflated with Sulis - the local wisdom goddess.

The Romans celebrated her festival from March 19 to March 23.

Now here's a question. Do we believe in Athena, Minerva etc in addition to Saraswati? Or is it like Hindus tend to venerate all Gods, regardless of their origin? I know my (supposedly Hindu) son is totally taken by all the Greek gods after reading the Percy Jackson novels.

There is only one religion,
though they are hundred versions of it. :moony:

William Shakespeare.

A rose will smell as sweet as ever by whichever name you

decide to call it!

Hindu Gods are very Satvic, calm, smiling and give us peace of mind. The Roman and Greek Gods are so portly, powerful and majestic.

So Why not combine both the qualities to make a wholesome personality?
I second you son! :tea:

Omg! Yummy mummy means something else or at least i thought. Renu is a yummy mummy :) and i think all mummies should aspire to be one and daddies too while we're at it. Nothing wrong with looking after oneself no?

I used be crazy about Greek gods and goddesses as well. My favourites were Hades, Artemis and the great Zeus himself. I also love Medusa the gorgon, although shes not a god of any sort. She had this really cool ability which im not elaborating here!

Dear Amala,

While ancient Greek vase-painters and relief carvers imagined Medusa and her sisters as beings born of monstrous form, sculptors and vase-painters of the fifth century began to envisage her as being beautiful as well as terrifying.

In an ode written in 490 BC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pindaralready Medusa is spoken of as "fair-cheeked Medusa".[SUP]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medusa#cite_note-4[/SUP]

In a late version of the Medusa myth, related by Ovid a Roman poet
Medusa was originally a ravishingly beautiful maiden, "the jealous aspiration of many suitors," priestess in Athena's temple.

But when she and Poseidon the "Lord of the Sea"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poseidon were caught together by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athena
the temple of Athena, the enraged Athena transformed Medusa's beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.

In Ovid's telling, Perseus describes Medusa's punishment by Minerva (Athena) as just and well earned.

It is the sad story of a beautiful woman who got raped first and then cursed on top of that by another female god!

Is it true or does this suggest that
"Women do not show kindness to other women???"
