I don't know Sir! I was only 20 years old and the exam was my only focus. These beetles came one after the other and
crawled all over the floor! I know that the sting will make me unable to write my exam - M.Sc first year. My room was in
the first floor and so..... 'bang and throw' was the easiest solution at that time! :moony:
After the exam was over, I did 50 thOppukaraNams to get rid of the sin I committed!
Raji Madam
Your Prayachitha for killing those
rhinoceros knowingly is not enough; 50 Thoppukaranam

"Men, O Brahmana, while walking about hither and thither, kill numberless creatures lurking in the ground by trampling on them, and even men of wisdom and enlightenment destroy animal life in various ways, even while SLEEPING or reposing themselves.
The earth and the air all swarm with living organisms, which are unconsciously destroyed by men from mere ignorance. The commandment that people should not do harm to any creature, was ordained of old by men, who were ignorant of the true facts of the case.
After full consideration, the conclusion is irresistible that there is not a single man who is free from the sin of doing injury to animal life.
Even the sage, O good Brahmana, whose vow is to do harm to no creature, doth inflict injury to animal life. Only, on account of greater needfulness, the harm is less."
Knowingly or unknowingly himsa is a sin:
Srimad Bhagavatam 5.26.17:
(See Jai Shree Krishna's answer for details)
Persons who tormented the birds, beasts, reptiles, MOSQUITOES, lice, worms and flies like are placed in the hell known as Andhakupa by Godhead and he is attacked by the creatures he tormented during his life.
Prayachit and Prayer for clearing the sin daily:
Hinduism provides prayachit and prayer for taking away the sins unknowingly and knowingly done by doing Nithya Karmanishtanams like Santhyavandanam and VAISWADEVAM and every day.
i) Morning Santhyavandanam;
".... yadraatryaa paapamakaarshham | manasaa vaachaa hastaabhyaam |
padbhyaamudarena shishnaa | raatristadavalumpatu | yatkimcha duritam mayi ....."
'... The sins accumulated during NIGHT by mind, sayings, hands, legs, stomach and other sins if any altogether will be removed by the NIGHT Devata....'
(ii) Evening Santhyavandanam:
"...yadahnaa paapamakaarshham |
manasaa vaachaa hastaabhyaam |
padbhyaamudarena shishnaa | ahastadavalumpatu | yatkincha duritam mayi ....."
(iii) Vaiswadevam:
Bootha Yagnam is Vaisvadevam.
" Vaiswadevasthu karthavyah panchasoonapanutthaye "
Vaiswadevam is done MAINLY for eradicating sins of Prani vadham (killing insects and others).
We use five impediments to kill insects and plants (plants too have life!). These are
'Pancha suna grahastasya vardante aharaharah sada ! Kandinee, Beshinee, Sullee, Jalakumba Upaskaraha!'
Many insects are victimised by the kitchen fire, intensionally or otherwise. When water is heated many lives are killed.
Grinding stone, mixie like things kill small insects.
'Upaskaram', ie., the sweaping brush. many ants and flies are destroyed by this, with its modern counter part, the vacuum cleaner, wet/dry.
Lord Viswadeva is invoked and 22 balis are offered. Only Grahasta with wife can do this Vaiswadevam.
