Iit, iit....

visa, rajai,

these were all written june through november 1998. i had totally 15 or so. but this was before email, and what i wrote i distributed through the old IBM VM system at work (from where these were written :))

there was no way of keeping permanently in the VM, no proper print facilities and no other way to keep it electronically.

to keep the long story short, i lost all the articles. one of my classmates had saved 4 of these, which he redistributed on the pearl reunion (30th).

the hostels were so clean and food still better than most hotels of madras. now i hear the hostels are run down. not sure if anything is done about it. i am even surprised that now 2 students live in that little box of a room.

in contrast, the campus nowadays looks 100 times better than my days. the saplings have grown to beautiful shade bearing trees. also it is more colourful with more girl students.

the only thing constant in life, is changes. iit madras has had its fair share - good and bad.

For perhaps the first time, students of IIT-Madras will protest the fee hike introduced by the Central government

for all Indian Institutes of Technology. Students said the hike — 80 per cent for undergraduate courses and almost

double for postgraduate students from this year — is an attempt to make the IITs self-financed and render them

inaccessible to poor aspirants.

i thought 25% open seats will be for means scholarships; apart from free education for SC/ST ofcourse...and there are bank loans available. not saying it is right or wrong, but let us get the facts straight. :)

honestly, i think, the entrance of private parties to run colleges, is a blessing for our community. most of us, by hook or crook, got into these colleges and have moved out of india - atleast the ones i know.

most of these, including my nephews and nieces, bar one, did not even bother for iit. they considered it not worth the effort, and the good experience of relaxed lifestyle afforded by the parents, appear to have taken away any residual 'hunger' to work hard to succeed.

this is a different equation than my youth, when i think the options were few, and we had only a handful of engineering colleges in tamil nadu. still, i should confess, it was jarring to note, the close to zero presence in iit madras, for where did all these 'merit' students go. :)

Even with the increase in fee, IIT seems to be the cheapest engineering institute!

The capitation fee alone in an average engg. college is 2 lakhs + and inversely proportional to the marks in +2!

A study by the IITs revealed that more than 90% of the students joining IITs were from Andhra. The education level in Andhra cannot be so superior as to achieve such stupendous result.
But you are saying that the coaching centers are so superior to achieve such stupendous results?!
Many students who cleared the entrance exam scored just average marks in their final exams as the students concentrated only on clearing IIT JEE. Therefore IITs changed the exam system and also introduced cut off marks. How long this will in reducing the influence of coaching classes only time will tell.
If the IIT format was changed and additional eligibility criteria were introduced just to keep Andhra students out, I would say it is pathetic. But that would be par for course to what generally happens in India. Govts penalize hard work and ability as much as possible through ubiquitous reservations of all sorts. I suppose all non-Andhraites including tamilians will rejoice.
Wouldn't the top 20% criteria pose additional problems? The mark distribution could vary significantly across different boards. In TN, there may be several lakhs of students in top 20% which may not be the case in other tougher boards. Also juxtapose this with caste-based reservations. These additional eligibility criteria if applied commonly could impact privileged classes - i.e. the OBCs, the SCs and STs. Therefore, caste-based percentile lists will be required.A section of general class will be kept out even from appear for the exam. Of course, discussing these issues will be considered "bitching" by "enlightened" members and their coterie. Nevertheless..

still raji, for most of us, i think there is an option here re college admission. just imagine the horror, had we just left it to the govt to monopolize professional colleges. the burst of the population would have, i think, far outrun, the demand. in such cases, the vulnerables of the society will suffer.

and politically we as a community are vulnerable. which is why, i am surprised, for all the supposed brilliance which is a close to 100% belief of all of us, tambrams are doing so poorly in JEEE. in my youth, we had the same disadvantageous PUC which is the same as +2. still we managed to get more than half the seats in iitm, and the same numbers spread all over other iits.

i think there is no drive to work hard enough to achieve certain goals anymore among our youth. good life now. they seem to have it.

I met my younger son's classmate from I.I.T Madras (I did not know him before that) during a flight.

He was boasting about his work, his earnings, his position in I,I.T and his retirement plans.

He was sitting behind me and I could get a glimpse of him when I walked past.

He was bald on the top of the dome while my younger son looks a colleges student still.

I could not talk to him since he never stopped talking to his co passenger.

Just before getting out of the flight we always happen to stand in long queues and I got the opportunity to talk to him.

I asked him whether he was married. He was not. I told him, "Get married and raise a family before you start planning your retirement in California. Who will you pass on to your hard earned fortune and financial empire?"

From the look on his face it was clear that he had never thought or planned about his marriage.

He had better hurry while he still had some hair left on his head. Some girl might marry hims for his financial security in the Land of milk and honey.

The moral I want to convey is that some people become so obsessed with the I.I.T tag and so very $ oriented that they do not have time to think why they are earning, what they are earning!!!

Those days not many NBs had the ambition to become engineers, imho! :laser:

Shiny dome is NOT the effect of his aim to earn money!

There exists many bald beggars too!! :D

Shiny dome is the EFFECT of his ceaseless EFFORT to earn money.
It was hightime it REFLECTED on his ADVANCING age and RECEDING hairline
and MADE him think about getting married and settling down in life!

What about those who receive daily doses from the scum-lords here?

A honest and genuine doubt!!!

I thought I was being blamed as a giver and
not a receiver of these daily doses!!! :becky:

As for the scum lord, I will not know one -
even if I happen to see one!!! :decision:

It will be much easier for me to recognize the
dark lord and he-who-should-not-be-named! :tape:

By the way dear Mr. Shankarlaal, :spy:

Who or what is a scum lord???
