Thank you, Nannilam Balasubramanian. Please let us, newbies, know where all we can start off contributing immediately. As for me, I am interested in knowing history of Brahmanism. What characteristics in us brahmins, constitute or make a good one (brahmin)? Why are there so many divisions and sects within us?

I am sure there are many members who are enlightened to help me understand these.

Regards and thanks to all those who might participate in this discussion.

Good Morning. A very good question. Brahminism was an early religion in the Indian sub-continent
that was purely based on Vedic principles/writing. Brahmins who included priests, scholars, etc.
performed the sacred rites/rituals, as required in the Vedas, an absolute reality as theorized or
laid down in the Upanishads. To be very precise, it denotes an important starting place for the
understanding of the culture of brahminism as per religion and philosophy. Hinduism grows out
of brahminism and accepts most of the concepts of brahminism. Brahminism predates everey other
contemporary religion in India. http://www.britannica.com/topic/Upanishad

Thank you, Nannilam Balasubramanian. It was enlightening.

Of course, what was new for me was that you had mentioned Brahmanism as a religion. Is it true? Was Brahmanism not a part of Hindu way of living? I thought Brahmins were one of the four sects namely, Brahmins, Vaishiyas, shudras and Shatriyas. If Brahminism was a religion, will it not negate the foundation of Hindu way of life.

Hi,

I am a new member settled in Bangalore. Retired executive of Bank of Baroda. Now a days I organise tour programmes to North India, normally during the month of Sept and oct. Current year I had taken 26 persons and visited Puri, Gaya, Varanasi, Allahabad, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kedar, Badri, Vaishnodevi and New Delhi, at a very nominal expenses. I do not expect anyone to pay towards my own expenses during the tour period, though I organise the same.

Dear Members :

Please see the attached JPEG files you will understand complete history of Brahminism. Totally 42 slides are available with me collected and compiled on my own from various sources. Very interesting. We all Brahmins are presently adopted western culture and commercially motivated and certainly we can't adopt traditional way life. Atleast to understand we can read and understand about caste. Today Brahmin Community is just 4% of total population in India and considered as Minority Community but not treated under reservation class. Please give your comments and take it in right spirit.

Dear Savitri Mami :

It is not like that. Suraikkai can be eaten by Brahmins but restricted on rituals days like Srarda Thithi, Amavasai, Mahalaya Paksham, Vratham Days, etc. Suraikkai is good for health and once we consume suraikkai we used to pass urine frequently. After passing urine we should not perform rituals as it is called "Madi Thappu". Based on this principle only, Brahmins in traditional period avoided not only Suraikkai also Poosanikkai, Pappali, Kathirikkai, Murungaikkai and many more. Also these vegetables are considered as hard to digest. The practices what our forefathers adopted are scientifically proven as good. Let us also follow nothing wrong.
